Lausanne, August 4, 2008 - After nearly 15 months of competition featuring men's and women's qualifying for the 2008 Olympics, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour will take a break for three weeks as the world's top Beach Volleyball players head for the Beijing Summer Games. With the completion of the sixth and final SWATCH FIVB World Tour Grand Slam event on the 2008 calendar this past weekend in Austria, the international Beach Volleyball community now focuses on the Beijing competition starting Saturday in the Chinese capital with the finals set August 21 for women and August 22 for men. Beijing, China, August 4, 2008 - Teams which have strong psychology to make the most of their abilities will go the farthest in the Beach Volleyball competition at the Beijing Olympics, Georgia's team leader said on Monday. "Many teams are equal in strength. Everybody knows that. Mental stability is the most important," Levan Akhvledian said during the break time of a training session for the Georgian players at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball ground. Akhvledian said Beach Volleyball competitions at the Beijing Olympics will be the most exciting ones compared with previous Games as this time the results of the elimination matches after the top 16 will be completely open. Beijing, China, August 4, 2008 - The Australian men's and women's Beach Volleyball teams said here Monday that they both eye to bring medals home ahead of the kickoff of the Beijing tournament. "We are here to win a medal for Australia, I have worked out through 16 years to be in a position to do so," said Natalie Cook, the gold medalist in Sydney Olympics in 2000. Starting her beach volleyball career in 2003, Cook is a four-time Olympian rich in experience and competing skills. More

The Hague, Netherlands, August 3 - Maintaining their composure after losing the first set, Germany's Chantal Laboureur and Levke Springer came from behind Sunday to defeat home country favourites Rimke Braakman/Sophie van Gestel to win the women's gold medal of the 2008 SWATCH FIVB Youth World Championships, presented by RICOH, for players under the age of 19. The five-day, double gender event was held at Hommerson Beachsport Stadion in the seaside resort of Scheveningen in The Hague. Regaining their confidence as the 48-minute gold medal match evolved, Germany's Chantal/Springer came from behind to defeat the Netherlands' popular Braakman/van Gestel for the championship in three sets, 10-21 and 21-16 and 15-11. The 2008 SWATCH FIVB Youth World Champions was held for the seventh time and the first time in the Netherlands. Played in front of an enthusiastic and partisan Dutch crowd, both teams had to battle wind, intermittent light rain and mild temperatures in their championship match. More

Klagenfurt, Austria, August 3, 2008 - After failing in their first three attempts to win their countrys first ever SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal, Russians Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky won a pair of matches here Sunday to capture the mens title at the US$600,000 A1 Beach Volleyball Grand Slam 2008 presented by NOKIA. The final event of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour before the start of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the fourth-seeded Barsouk and Kolodinsky scored a 21-19 and 21-15 win in 45 minutes over seventh-seeded Stein Metzger and Mark Williams of the United States to split the $43,500 first-place prize.
