  • GOC NG Force was tasked to deny the Japanese the route Buna - Port Moresby. Subsequently, 39 Inf Bn was dispatched over the Kokoda Track.

  • Lababia Ridge (20-23 Jun 43)This action has been described at one of the classic engagements of the war. Lababia defended by D Coy of the 2/6 Inf Bn against an Japanese attacking force numbering more than 1,500 troops. The Australians had established linked defensive positions featuring extensive cleared fire lanes. Japanese envelopment tactics were defeated by the determined resistance of the Australians.
