New Delhi, Aug 3, 2008: The whole country was shocked today over the stampede in a temple that killed 145 people. Scores are also injured many of them in critical condition at the famed Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh.

The world famous shrine that attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year from across the country saw one of the worst tragedies in the history of the temple.

In fact it is one of the worst tragedies to have happened at any shrine in the country. Reports say that the number of deaths is feared to go up further.

The whole country seems to have been shocked by the unfortunate incident.

Hamid Ansari, the Voice President of the country has expressed deep shock over the unfortunate tragedy. He has conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the stampede.

It is reported that around 20,000 to 25,000 pilgrims had gathered at the temple, 160 km from state capital Shimla, to offer prayers when the railing on way to the sanctum sanctorum gave way, resulting in stampede.

Around 30 children were also killed in the incident besides scores of men and women. Distraught relatives were seen pouring over the bodies to locate their separated kins.

The continuing rain hampered relief work seriously. Relief workers comprising of temple staff and residents of the area found it difficult to help the injured and carry them to neatest medical aid centre.
