Three-way showdown for equestrian gold

Updated August 12, 2008 21:14:10

Germany, Australia and Great Britain are heading into an equestrian showdown in the final component of the three-day eventing competition.

As it heads into the jumping competition, Germany is looking to avoid a repeat of the Athens competition, which saw the gold medal taken away from them and awarded to France, after a rules breach by star rider Bettina Hoy.

Germany sits on 158.10 penalties, ahead of Australia's 162.00 and Britain's 173.70, and boasts the top two individual riders in Hinrich Romeike and Ingrid Klimke.

The cross-country component saw Germany push in front of Australia, who finished the dressage leading both the individual and team rankings.
