Ricki-Lee Biography

Ricki-Lee Coulter was born in AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND on NOVEMBER 10TH 1985. Now a proud Queenslander, she has lived on Australia's GOLD COAST since she was three weeks old. Mother - Loretta, Father - John, (younger) Sister - Jodie now share a home on a 20 acre property in the heart of the Gold Coast Hinterland. Ricki-Lee has recently married long-time love, JAMIE BABBINGTON, a Queensland builder, in September 2007.

A script-like story unfolds for Ricki-Lee, who remained an un-recognised singing talent amongst her family and friends until her mid-teens. Spending most of her childhood as an active sports fanatic, it was believed she was destined for a career in Pro-Netball, until a serious knee injury brought six years of competitive play for Queensland to an end. In a twist of fate, after a serious knee reconstruction, she was told she would never play again. Ricki-Lee's future was already in the hands of change.

Ricki-Lee's vocal abilities were accidentally uncovered months later, when mother, Loretta, overheard her daughter singing in her bedroom, in what she describes as a breathtaking, HUGE voice for a 15 year-old girl. Ricki-Lee's very musical family had NO idea of her secret talent until this point in time.

From there, Ricki-Lee leapt headfirst into performance in general. A combination of live circuit gigging around the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas with live bands, as well as school productions, as she secured lead musical roles in HAIR, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, LES MISERABLES, MISS SAIGON, CATS, RENT, THE BOYFRIEND, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, GREASE, AND ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.

Network TEN'S hit show, AUSTRALIAN IDOL (SERIES 2) officially launched her public profile when her talent, personality and charismatic performances took the budding songstress all the way through to the TOP 12. Ricki-Lee was considered an instant favourite to win, performing hits such as DONT STOP TIL YOU GET ENOUGH, PROUD MARY, WE CAN WORK IT OUT & I HAVE NOTHING. When Ricki-Lee was voted off mid-series, in 7TH PLACE, there was outrage from viewers nationally. TEN saw ratings suddenly plummet, in what the judges described as misguided voting.

In 2005, after finishing the show and not signing-on with SONY BMG, Ricki-Lee went on to take the independent route after, securing a deal with SHOCK RECORDS AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL. She recorded her debut self-titled album RICKI-LEE in Melbourne, working with some of the most distinguished producers and artists in the country. The final line-up for the album included names such as AUDIUS MTAWARRIA, ISRAEL, NITTY and JARRAD ROGERS.

From RICKI-LEE - the debut album came her massive GOLD single success HELL NO! written by AUDIUS MTAWARIRA (Delta Goodrem, Paulini), which debuted at #5 ON NATIONAL ARIA CHART. This track spent 3 weeks in the TOP 10, standing strong in the TOP 40 for over 3 months. The clip was shot in Melbourne by the ARIA Award winning BART BORGHESI and was choreographed by WILLIAM FORSYTHE, who has worked with artists such as KYLIE MINOGUE.

Ricki-Lee's second GOLD single SUNSHINE, went ARIA TOP TEN (#8) within weeks of hitting the charts and is a track that has proven itself time and time again. It could still be seen floating around the ARIA TOP 40 after four-months in the charts. SUNSHINE REACHED #1 ON THE CHR RADIO AIRPLAY CHART, #9 ON THE HOT 100 CHART (MOST PLAYED SONG ON RADIO) and #3 ON THE MOST PLAYED AUSTRALIAN ARTIST AIRPLAY CHART. The track has become a favourite across several networks, with audiences consistently putting it at the top of request charts.

BREATHE - Ricki-Lee's third single, a beautiful, emotional ballad, debuted in the 2006 charts in the TOP 20 - jumping to #14 the following week and remaining strong on the charts for some time. Again, ARIA AWARD WINNING DIRECTOR, BART BORGESHI came to the party to shoot a stunning, powerful video for this track.

Ricki-Lee, has since toured and recorded with the YOUNG DIVAS (a 15-month project involving Ricki-Lee, Paulini, Kate & Emily who are all former Australian Idol finalists). After the amazing platnium success of their SMASH SINGLES, THIS TIME I KNOW ITS FOR REAL, HAPPENING ALL OVER AGAIN and SEARCHIN' - the album was their follow-up success, DEBUTING AT #4. Ricki-Lee made the difficult and emotional decision to leave the YOUNG DIVAS project in April, 2007 to return to her solo career. Her place in the Young Divas line-up was replaced by the beautiful and talented JESSICA MAUBOY - runner up, AUSTRALIAN IDOL 2006.

Ricki-Lee has been a featured artist on many red carpets in 2006/2007, most recently including the ARIA AWARDS where she was given the honour of opening the 2007 ARIA BROADCAST, performing a surprise ten-dancer-deep choreographed red carpet strut of her single, CAN'T TOUCH IT. CAN'T TOUCH IT debuted at #2 into the ARIA SINGLES CHART and remained inside the ARIA TOP TEN for over 2-months. CAN'T TOUCH IT can still be seen floating around in the ARIA TOP 50 after almost five-months.
