Essential Writer’s Reference Works

Murder, Crime & Punishment: What’s a novel without bloodshed? Some of these books aren’t quite as relevant if you’re writing fantasy, but even a fantasy constabulary should have some logical procedures to follow when investigating a crime. I love the Howdunit series. And don’t ask about the torture books. I’ve got a lot on executions, too, that I didn’t list here lest you decide I’m too scary to keep reading!

History & Settings: Even a fantasy city will feel more realistic if you’ve based it on the real world. I love settings based on Elizabethan to Victorian London and Revolutionary Paris. Picard’s books especially are chock-full of lovely details about daily life that no writer can possibly resist.

Simplification: Let’s face it: writing doesn’t pay well, and it takes an extraordinary amount of time. I enjoy a life of voluntary simplicity and frugality. If you’re interested in clearing out the clutter and spending more time on your priorities, read some of these excellent resources to get you started.

Disclaimer: Yes, I make a few pennies if you buy a book from this list. Any book you see on my bookstore page(s) is one that I own or truly consider a must-read. Book links from my reviews are also affiliate links, but since I’m honest about whether I liked the book or not, they may include links to books I don’t think are very good. Caveat lector.
