LIKE so many English clubs, Nottingham Forest are in the process of consigning the City Ground to the history books.

Name: The City Ground
Capacity: 30,602
Record attendance: 49,946 v Manchester United in October 1967
Distance from Elland Road: 73 miles
Year ground opened: 1898
United's last visit: March 16, 2005

Forest celebrated their centenary in the sta
dium nine years ago, but last month the club announced they are considering moving to a new home by 2014. At a cost of £40-£50m, and producing a capacity of 50,000, the new venue – and the complex which would surround it – are being described as a "dramatic new gateway"to Nottingham.
A new stadium is seen as another step back towards the success and high profile which Forest enjoyed. Their decline had been less pronounced and sudden than Leeds United's, but twice European Cup winners Forest are another of England's proverbial sleeping giant.
A settled summer and a series of quality arrivals – two stark contrasts to developments at Elland Road – have placed Forest at the top of the bookmakers' odds for promotion next season, but their supporters have heard that prophesy before. Forest have not been a Championship club – let alone held a place in the Premiership – for two years.
United will turn out at the City Ground on August 25 for what will be arguably their biggest away fixture, and one of the most anticipated matches in League One next season. Forest's stadium lies yards from the river Trent and is the second biggest ground in the division, after Elland Road.
United were the visitors on one of the most dramatic afternoons witnessed at the City Ground when, on August 24, 1968, the venue's main stand caught fire and burned to the ground. Fortunately, and despite a crowd of over 31,000, there were no casualties and Forest played their next six home games at Meadow Lane, the home of neighbours Notts County.
The City Ground in its present state reached completion ahead of Euro 96 when the Trent Stand was constructed, lifting the stadium's capacity to 30,576, but Forest appear set on leaving the stadium.
They may also have one eye on the 2018 World Cup, in the hope that the FA would look to Nottingham for potential venues were England selected by FIFA.
Mass turnouts may be few in number for United's supporters next season, but the City Ground will provide the best opportunity for away travel.
Up to 4,750 visiting fans can be held in the lower tier of the Bridgford Stand, behind one goal, and Forest is also one of the shorter trips facing United in the division. Just 73 miles lie between Elland Road and the gates of the City Ground.
