Daily Trojan History

Editors in Chief

Until 1966, editors served terms of one year. However, some editors before then did not finish their terms. Cleve Herman (1939-40) resigned because of ill health. From 1942 to 1947 only one editor served the entire term for which he/she was appointed (Mary Frances Touton, 1944-45) because of World War II and the postwar adjustment period. During this time, staff turnover was rapid because of demands in the military services. The boom in USC student enrollment in the postwar period caused even more problems for staffs. Not until 1947 was calm restored.

One-semester terms were instituted for editors in 1966 because of concern over stress of the intensive job and academics of the students serving. Since the start of one-semster terms of service (1966), only three editors have been reelected to serve an additional semester, or a full year: Mike Parfit (1968-69), Leef Smith (1989-90), and Carole Cleveland (1990-91).
