About this database

With this form, you can search the Chicago Police Department's database of reported crimes. Due to privacy concerns, the exact address of a crime incident is not displayed. You can search for incidents within a quarter mile of a specific location, or the data can be queried by community area, zip code, neighborhood, police district, ward, beat, park or a radius around a public school. You can look at all crimes or specify a type of crime. Finally, you can decide what dates to include. New data is added daily, however, the most recent data available is usually from 7 or 8 days prior to the current date.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the information in the database is "based upon preliminary information supplied to the Police Department by the reporting parties and have not been verified. The preliminary crime classifications may be changed at a later date based upon additional investigation and there is always the possibility of mechanical or human error. Therefore, the Chicago Police Department does not guarantee (either expressed or implied) the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or correct sequencing of the information and the information should not be used for comparison purposes over time."

If you have trouble with a specific address, try using an intersection or adding street type (street, road, etc.) or direction (North, South, etc.) to your search. For answers to other questions about the information reflected in this database, read the police department's frequently asked questions.
