August is here, the school summer holidays are well under way - and I bet there are quite a few local parents who are already wondering how to keep the children occupied over the next few weeks. At least it has been sunny this week so the kids can play outside. Whatever shall we do if it rains?

The good news is that there are loads of activities for children and families in the Wakefield district over the summer. From Angling at Newmillerham County Park to T-shirt decorating in Ossett there’s something for everyone. You can get involved in an Activity Day at Thornes Park or a bike ride at Anglers Country Park.

This week I have been sending out my Families Summer Newsletter to parents and families in my constituency, letting them know what’s going on and how they can get involved. The Newsletter is also available at local libraries, on my website, or we can mail one out if you ring my office on 01924 898158.

DCSF - one year on

Send in your favourite healthy recipe
As part of the government’s plan to teach all young people practical cooking at school, the Department for Children, Schools and Families is currently collecting entries for a healthy eating recipe book.

New play facilities at Outwood Park
Children from Ledger Lane Primary School joined local residents at the opening of the new neighbourhood play area at Outwood Park last week.

Christine Sharman, Ros Lund and everyone involved with Outwood Park Action Group have all worked tirelessly to bring this much needed investment to Outwood. Thanks to their efforts, and the investment of BIFFA and WREN, the children now have a fun and stimulating place to play which I’m sure will be enjoyed by families and local youngsters.

I know there are many other play areas that need updating and replacing with brand new equipment in the same way as Outwood Park has done. And we will be able to do this over the next few years as our district benefits from the £235 million investment in new outdoor play areas as part of the government’s Children’s Plan.

Post Office branch closures
Local residents will be disappointed that the Post Office has decided to close five branches across the Normanton constituency - as I am too. Of course it is not possible for every post office to stay open, even with the huge £1.7 billion subsidy going to branches. And I understand why some postmasters and postmistresses have decided to take the generous redundancy package on offer to them.

But I know from the hundreds of letters and petition signatures how important post offices are to local people. It is vital that we have an open and accessible Post Office service in every local community and this will continue to be a key priority for me.
