Norihiko Hibino became a virtuosic saxophonist while studying human sciences at Osaka. He decided to settle in Kansas as an independent jazz musician following a year at the Berklee college of music, resulting in some appearances at jazz festivals and the release of several albums under his label Boylstone Records. After moving back to Japan, he was employed at Konami in late 1999 and initially scored Metal Gear: Ghost Babel.
Soon in to his career, he was paired with Harry Gregson-Williams to score the highly successful cinematic soundtrack to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Following critically acclaimed works on Zone of the Enders, Boktai, and Yu-Gi-Oh! series, Hibino returned to the series with Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, the remake Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and, in a role that gave him widespread acclaim for the vocal theme "Snake Eater", Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
After leaving Konami at the end of 2004, Hibino released the jazz album Akashi. He subsequently founded the multi-artist studio GEM Impact, a jazz bar, and a jazz vocal institute and formed the band The Outer Rim. His freelance scores include Rumble Roses XX, Yakuza 2, Elvandia Story, Commando 3, and 1942: Joint Strike. He has also maintained exteinsive involvement in the Metal Gear Solid series and participated in Extra, Metal Gear 20th Anniversary, and the Etrian Odyssey arranged albums.
