Alan Main
Goalkeeper

United Debut: v. Forfar Athletic (A) 2-0 SC 24/3/87.

Signed From: Elgin City £8,000 25/11/86.

Transferred to: St Johnstone £150,000 5/1/95.

Main saved a penalty on his debut in a Scottish Cup Replay at Station Road, a week after United beat Barcelona at the Nou Camp in 1987. Main spent much of his first 2 seasons battling with Scott Thomson to be 2nd choice keeper behind Billy Thomson, but by 1988/89 he was loaned out to Cowdenbeath and East Stirling. Three months into the following season, both Thomson's had lost form and Main took over, spending most of the next 3 seasons in goal for United. By 1992 Main had to battle for the No.1 jersey again, this time with Guido Van de Kamp, but missed only one match of the 1992/93 campaign. Eventually losing his place halfway through the following season, Main missed out on the successful Scottish Cup run in 1994, and fell out of favour altogether the following season, his last game being at Ibrox where he went of injured at half-time. Always a favourite with the fans, no matter who he played for! Ooh-Aah!
