Richard Gough
Defender

United Debut: v Celtic (H) 2-3 22/4/81.

Signed From: Wits Universary (South Africa) 21/3/80.

Transferred to: Tottenham Hotspur for £750,000 1/8/86.

Gough - along with Malpas, Hegarty and Narey - was part of one of the best defences in Scotland. An attacking full-back who played a vital part in bringing the League Championship to Tannadice in 1983, he scored more than his fair share of goals from his defensive position, scoring nearly 10 goals in each of his last 4 seasons at Tannadice. Gough was a Scotland regular during his time at United and scored the winner against England at Hampden in 1985. Was voted SPFA Player of the Year 1985-86, but at the start of the next season Gough left Tannadice for England, just missing out on the UEFA Cup run. Returned to Scotland soon after, as a cenre-half for Rangers, and was a major influence during their "nine in a row".
