Vision

Recognizing that childhood literacy serves as a foundation for life-long learning and success, Orlando Sentinel Communications pledges to reverse Central Florida's current reading crisis through its Reading by Nine initiative. This multi-year program features focused editorials and news coverage, targeted advertising and marketing programs, reading-related community events, employee and community volunteer efforts, and fund-raising and charitable grant programs.

Through these efforts, Orlando Sentinel Communications envisions all children in Central Florida reading in English at grade level by age nine. Our ongoing commitment to Reading by Nine will inform, influence and galvanize the community, illuminate problems and solutions surrounding child literacy and improve children's reading skills.

The Challenge

In 2001, the Orlando Sentinel launched Reading by Nine in Central Florida. It is a multi-year initiative aimed at helping kindergarten through third grade students read at grade level in English by age 9.

Education affects us all – whether we have children or not. After all, we are bringing along the next generation of citizens, voters, employees and leaders.
