SR 504 - Castle Rock to Toutle River Bridge
Engineer’s estimate: $5,548,952 million
Contractor’s bid amount: $5,122,537
Estimated cost for completion:
An additional layer of asphalt was added to a small portion of the project to correct a problem of cracking in the new surface. While the additional layer of asphalt prevented further cracking, it added approximately $150,000 to the project cost. The contract team managed most issues and worked to avoid major impacts to the cost and schedule of the project.
This project repaved 21 miles of SR 504 and all of SR 505, totaling 38 miles of new asphalt.
It preserves the integrity of both highway surfaces and provides a smoother ride for the traveling public.
SR 504 leads to Mt. St. Helens, a popular recreation area, through the communities of Castle Rock and Toutle. SR 505 passes through the communities of Winlock and Toledo, connecting to SR 504 as it heads towards the mountain. The WSDOT and our contractor made efforts to inform area businesses of construction activities and traffic impacts. This route also runs along Silver Lake and near or adjacent to rivers.
Portable changeable message signs were used on this project to inform motorists of construction activities. Traffic impact information was included in the region’s weekly travel advisory and targeted news releases were issued during the project.
The WSDOT team has worked with this contractor for many years on many different projects, and has a strong working relationship.
