TBILISI (AFP) - Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on Thursday ordered Georgian forces to cease fire in the breakaway region of South Ossetia and called for talks to find a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

"I have just ordered -- it is a very painful order -- to cease fire.... Let's stop this spiral of violence.... Let's resume negotiations in whatever format, bilateral or multilateral," Saakashvili said in a televised address.
