Mancini and Kirschner on the Child's Play Remake
September 8, 2008

ShockTillYouDrop.com talked exclusively to Don Mancini and David Kirschner about Tuesday's release of Child's Play: Chucky's 20th Birthday Edition on DVD and naturally, talk turned to the remake that is in the works. Here's a clip:

Mancini: Naturally, I don't want to say too much. A lot of the Chuck mythology was reworked by David and Tom Holland - specifically the voodoo aspect but also the specific detail of Chucky being possessed by the soul of a serial killer, which is distinct from my script where he was the living embodiment of the kid's Id. All of the stuff in the movie is such an intrinsic part of the mythology I think it would be misguided to stray from that too far. We have ways and ideas of making that darker. Darker, we believe, than the original movie.

Boo! Remaking Child's Play is a BAD idea!

Posted by: Jason on September 8, 2008 at 10:42:49

I think we should all thank Chris Nolan and Co. for The Dark Knight. Now everybody wants their movie to be darker, grittier, and better than batman. Nice Job Mr. Nolan!!

WTF!!!seriously? lets just be honest here, hollywood has gotten really lazy in the last 5 years!!! NO MORE REMAKES OF CLASSICS!!! whats next, remaking Rocky?

Posted by: MastaMind on September 8, 2008 at 11:02:46

cant get any worse than its predecessors, i say go for it i'd like to see what they would bring new to the table to make it darker or i guess just overall not as ridiculous at the franchise had became

Posted by: Lorenzo on September 8, 2008 at 11:08:13

It's not going to be a complete remake... Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) will have much more to do, Chucky will be slightly redesigned and according to Don the deaths are diffrent. There not the same and there are other people going to die than in the original. So i'm up for it! Besides what did you guys expect? After Seed of Chucky Don cornered himself into a position he couldn't get out of. Or at least not with a satisfying outcome. I'd rather see this, than a sequel to the turd that's called Seed of Chucky.

PS: Sorry for my English, I'm from Belgium and didn't have time to see if everything is spelled right. xD

There seems to be a lot of dissent amongst fans over remakes of classic movies. I can understand a movie being done right the first time with no need for a remake, but I think the smartest way of looking at it is, a remake will never destroy what the original was. It's just a new movie from a different point of view. Maybe it will be good, maybe it won't. Even if it's horrible though, it could drive a new generation that never seen the original to go out and find the original on DVD and generate new fans.

Mark my words they say the remake will be darker and grittier....but with a PG-13 rating.

REMAKES IS GO0OD BEACUSE IT MAKES THINGS MORE INTERESTING BEACUSE LATELY NEW COMING MOVIES ARE REALLY CHEAZYYY!! BUT ANYWAIS GOO CHUKY!!!

The original child'splay series is really kind of lame. Although I'll never be supportive of any re-makes, it sound like this new Child's Play might be good if they go with concept of aChucky being the embodiment a Child's ID.

Posted by: mud on September 8, 2008 at 12:15:33

Ok, listen. If Child's Play sucked when it first came out, what the hell makes you think it's going to be good the second time? This is a seriously bad idea, unless you're into wasting large amounts of money.

Your English is fine, Lorenzo. But Gh0st? Seriously, go back to elementary school.

The next remake will be It's a Wonderful Life starring that wacky Ben Stiller. They will follow it up by a very dark version of Blazing Saddles starring Robert Downey Jr. as the black cowboy.

Posted by: dave on September 8, 2008 at 12:31:41

SANE..... the quote was "WAS the embodiment of the kids id" hes talking about the original script for the original childs play...

Posted by: WillDogg on September 8, 2008 at 12:35:15

These guys wanted to re-make the Child's Play series more 'darker' way before the TDK came out.

Posted by: Snarky Bastard on September 8, 2008 at 12:53:17

If Child's Play is a "classic," then I'm ****ing Anna Faris.

Posted by: R on September 8, 2008 at 12:55:17

This is a good move in my opinion because if you look at the newer chuckies(seed of chucky, bride of chucky) you realize that the movies are becoming worse.

Posted by: John on September 8, 2008 at 13:08:04

I would rather see this than another comedy Sequel that isn't scary.

Posted by: CY on September 8, 2008 at 13:10:56

Coming soon to a theater near you: The Goonies remake starring The Jonas Brothers. Because hey, why not?

Poltergeist? The Birds? Nightmare? CHUCKY? Is any of this necessary?

Posted by: son of krypton on September 8, 2008 at 13:37:39

screw batman it was good. it was not a masterpiece by far.

Posted by: GOODGUY on September 8, 2008 at 13:45:42

DONT **** WITH THE CHUCK THEY SHOULD REMAKE This MOVIE **** THEY ARE ALREADY REMAKING EVER OTHER HORROR FILM UNDER THE SUN WHY NOT CHILDS PLAY AS WELL?

Posted by: Masked_Ape on September 8, 2008 at 13:57:08

First off I'd like to state, Dark Knight fans get off your high horse. It was a good movie, okay yeah we got it, but seriously Chucky and his franchise were dark and twisted long before Christopher Nolan even thought about the Dark Knight. God, I'm sick of TDK this and Nolan that, now I got that off my chest.

Secondly I love the Chucky films, even the new ones. Sure they're not scary, but they're good for a laugh. As far as the remake goes, it's by the original creators, featuring Dourif still voicing the evil chunk of plastic. It's not like some new creative force is trying to make the Chucky movie they want. No, it's the original guys, making the movie that was a little more intended.

So yeah bring it on, I'll be there.

they better make it right and evil. i grew up on the original and still love it. go charles!

Posted by: Robert on September 8, 2008 at 14:47:43

Jason... check!

Freddy... check!

Chucky... jeez...

What's next? Killer Tomatoes?

Posted by: yougottabekiddingme on September 8, 2008 at 14:52:46

I'll tell you what's next: the Toxic Avenger! That's how freakin' desprate, and un-creative Hollywood is now. They're going to start digging all the way to the bottom of the pile and dig out mediocre movies (which will all be labeled as "classics" or "ground breaking").

Posted by: ico on September 8, 2008 at 14:58:31

What is with all of these remakes and reboots? It's like Hollywood is trying to redefine itself. Is there something they're afraid of? Are the theatre attendences so bad that they are this desperate? Thes remakes dont personally bother me that much but i was just asking.

If they were to remake any horror movie, i think they should do Phantasm and have Hugo Weaving play the tall man.
