Hurricane Ike has already impacted the college football schedule. Texas announced Wednesday night that it had postponed its Saturday nonconference game with Arkansas. The game was rescheduled for Sept. 27, which had been an off week for both teams.

Texas DT reinstated after one-game suspension
Defensive tackle Lamarr Houston was reinstated Monday after serving a one-game suspension following his arrest Aug. 31 for driving while intoxicated. Coach Mack Brown declined to say whether Houston would start Saturday against Arkansas. The punishment was less than the three-game suspensions received by Sergio Kindle and Henry Melton for similar transgressions in 2007.

Texas Longhorns' Foswhitt Whittaker sparkles in debut
Texas' rushing offense was running on empty Saturday night against UTEP. That was before redshirt freshman Foswhitt Whittaker trotted onto the field for the first time. Whittaker, who is called "Fozzy" by his teammates, gave the Longhorns a jolt early in the second quarter.

UTEP billed Saturday night's game against No. 10 Texas as its Super Bowl. And the Miners gave that kind of effort. But in the end, the Longhorns made it just another nonconference blowout, pulling away in the second half for a 42-13 victory before a stadium-record crowd of 53,415 at the Sun Bowl.
