Be glad your name isn't Felipe Massa

So, you all saw it on TV. Did Lewis Hamilton deserve the appalling decision by the stewards at the Belgian Formula 1 GP?

Lay aside your team loyalties and remember what happened: it was raining; Hamilton was catching Raikkonen and tried to pass. He didn't make it, crossed the chicane (as often happens) and, having realised his mistake, allowed Raikkonen back into the lead before attacking again.

The two drivers bravely challenged each other and motor-racing fans around the world were catapulted to the edge of their seats. It was an awesome display of driving.

That's what F1 racing is all about – indeed, such aggressive challenges and determination to win are what pundits have been calling for in recent years. Now, it seems, the stewards have bowed to commercial and perhaps other pressures and penalised an honest winner.

Such bias seems to occur too often when McLaren and the Lords of F1, Ferrari, clash. Team orders, the farce of Massa being allowed to get away with almost causing a crash in the pits, the "spying" fiasco – frankly, I'm glad I'm not Felipe Massa.

If he accepts this win on his record then any sense of honour at the top end of motorsport has just gone out of the window.

Winning by default is no win at all. - The Editor
