The Electronic Text Center is located on the third floor of Alderman Library (west wing). For the past twelve years it has been a focal point for humanities computing at UVa, providing training and project management expertise, access to equipment that permits the creation and analysis of electronic texts, and a place in which to use the electronic texts that are not available on-line (such as those on CD-ROM).
The Center is equipped with PCs and Macs. The PCs have either an Epson flatbed scanner or a Fujitsu scanner with automatic document feeder attached (8.5 x 11 inch maximum object size). The scanners can be used to convert printed text into computer-readable files or to make digital images, which can then be modified with Photoshop.
We support several types of text-analysis
software that can manipulate computer files and generate
indices, collations, concordances, word-lists, statistical
analyses, and hypertexts.
The Center's full-time and graduate student staff is drawn from the humanities and information technology fields. Staff members are available to help users with everything from basic scanning to complex hypertext and XML/SGML projects. Through this one-on-one assistance, and through our short courses in SGML and XML, XSLT, and scanning, we are developing a user community that is increasingly adept at the creation and use of electronic texts.
