ebi.ere.jpgThe Melbourne Tigers have cemented themselves in stone as favourites for the 2008/09 NBL Championship with the signing of Ebi Ere to complete their roster for the upcoming season.

The Tigers, who open their season on September 14th against the Sydney Spirit, had Ere fall into their hands after the South Dragons let Ere go and pursue a career in the NBA. Ere had originally signed with the Dragons through the off-season but had informed the club he would not arrive down under until a few weeks before the season was set to start at the earliest and maybe as late as a month into the season. The Dragons didn't want to wait and allowed Ere the chance to continue to win an NBA contract.

The door was left wide open and the Tigers swooped in on the chance to grab Ere, in the process giving up their long off-season chase of Julius Hodge.

Melbourne were prepared to open the season with only one import and wait up to a few months in their desire to get Hodge, but the opportunity to acquire Ere proved too much and the Tigers made their move.

The Tigers toyed with the idea of bringing Sean Lampley back, and also enquired about the services of Darius Rice who was caught up in the Singapore Slingers debacle.

Ere will be introduced as the newest Melbourne Tiger on Thursday when he arrives.

Last season Ere was runner-up in the MVP award to Melbourne centre Chris Anstey, leading the league with a scoring average of 27.1ppg.

On a perfect day and when Sam Mackinnon is fit and available, Melbourne will break out a starting five of Anstey, Mackinnon, Rod Grizzard, Ere and David Barlow.

I too am wondering how the Tigers can afford Ere under the salary cap... but it is a very very impressive lineup.

  • denis : Great stuff with the Gaze TV. Hope we see more of it.
  • south01 : True , yes true ,NBL will get a promotion , at least we havent lost ERI out of the NBL which is good. :$
  • ScottAll4U : At least Ebi's signing & the whole debacle with the Dragons will get the NBL into the papers... Won't it?
  • south01 : Tigers how did u pull it off , also Ebi u traitor u were meant to be a Dragon !
  • south01 : aussiebball.com top forum ..
  • south01 : yeah Tigers are paying cash under the table and paying off the NBl
  • denis : Does the NBL have a salary cap anymore? You can't seriuosly say the Tigers would be under the cap!
  • TimeToRock : It was a "masterstroke of recruiting"
  • DSDSDS : Hmmm... Tigers get Ere. Seemed a few weeks ago a Tigers fan labelled the Dragons as "cheats" when they signed Ere... I wonder if that totally impartial bystander will now suddenly label it as a "masterstroke of recruiting" now that he'll be in Tigers colours. Or maybe just remain strangely silent?
