Archives: Meeting Dr. Stephen Hawking

Once in a Lifetime...
Dr. HawkingThis past November, The Bridge School students, parents, and staff experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Dr. Stephen Hawking. Considered by many to be the heir to Albert Einstein and one of the most brilliant minds on the planet, Dr. Hawking was in San Jose to give a public lecture. As part of his visit, he requested a meeting with disabled students from the community and The Bridge School was fortunate to be invited to this special event. As you may know, Dr. Hawking has ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He is severely physically disabled and uses an AAC device to communicate. This common link between Dr. Hawking and our students made the event particularly meaningful for everyone in attendance.

Dr. Hawking and students

Many of The Bridge School students and alumni had the opportunity to pose questions to Dr. Hawking and he patiently answered all queries. One of our students wanted to know what Dr. Hawking's favorite subject was in school (it was math) and another asked how Dr. Hawking used his AAC device to communicate on the telephone. A highlight of the afternoon occurred when a Bridge School alumnus asked Dr. Hawking to answer the age-old question... "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" After the laughter subsided, Dr. Hawking provided the answer, "Definitely, the egg".
