Cape Town - Democratic Alliance MP Mike Waters has been suspended from Parliament following his outburst in the National Assembly on Wednesday, which prompted Speaker Baleka Mbete to ask him to leave the Chamber.
At the start of proceedings in the House on Thursday afternoon, Mbete asked Waters to stand before asking him to leave the parliamentary precincts immediately.
"Your conduct yesterday was of so serious a nature that I am left with no choice but to suspend you for a period of five parliamentary working days... ," she said.
This prompted a mass exodus of DA MPs from the House.
Mbete was referring to an incident on Wednesday when Waters posed a question to Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang as to whether she had been convicted of theft years ago in Botswana.
When this question was ruled out by the Speaker as it was deemed offensive, a heated debate followed in Parliament during which Waters rose at one point and called out that "you're covering for a thief", reported Sapa.
