Spirituality & Health Care

From the standpoint of spirituality - and specifically, the New Spirituality - which U.S. presidential candidate has the best health care plan?

Well, to answer that we must first clarify what the New Spirituality says about this kind of thing. What are the values of the New Spirituality as they relate to something as "every day" as health care?

Conversations with God makes it clear that all of us are One. It talks of the day when all of our day-to-day institutions and interactions - government, commerce, education, religion, the world of work - will be constructed about Oneness principles. Those principles invite human beings to treat each other as equals, and to see all people as extensions of the Self - which is in truth what they are.

In a society built upon New Spirituality principles, there would not be a huge and ever widening gap between the "have's" and the "have not's." There would be a leveling off of the benefits created by, and flowing to members of, every organized society. In other words, no one would be left in a lurch, no one would be left behind.

BLOG WRITER'S NOTE: Two days a week between now and election day in the U.S. I am going to open the discussion here to politics. The other five days we will continue to focus on purely spiritual issues.

I am doing this - and feel this 5-to-1 balance is reasonable -- since in the United States we are now racing toward what many people (including not a few folks in other countries around the world) say is the most important presidential election in a century or more. And, of course, politics are a major part of life. Indeed, Conversations with God says that "politics is your spirituality, demonstrated."

In my view, a person's most sacred spiritual beliefs had better inform that person's politics, or our political system is bankrupt. And so, today's political commentary - with an opportunity for the members of the online community here to add their own observations in the Comments Section.

Now, in terms of the practical aspects of this as it relates to the health care plans of the two candidates from President of the United States, let us explore which candidate most closely reflects the highest spiritual principles.

A wonderfully informative pair of articles comparing the health care proposals of John McCain and Barack Obama appeared Sept. 16 in The Wall Street Journal. A news/analysis story written by reporter Laura Meckler, and an opinion piece of the paper's Op Ed page by David M. Cutler, J. Bradford DeLong, and Ann Marie Marciarille, made the following points:

* Barack Obama's plan would bring more currently uninsured people into the American health care system. Far more. In round figures, 34 million newly covered citizens vs.a net increase of only about 1 million under the McCain health care proposals.

* John McCain's health care plan would cost less - but not a great deal less - than Barack Obama's: $1.3 trillion over ten years vs. the $1.6 trillion price tag for the Democrat's plan over the same period.

* Barack Obama would bring far more government regulation of big health insurance companies - requiring, for instance, insurance companies to provide coverage to everyone (including those with existing conditions), and at consistent prices, according to the news/analysis article reports. Large employers would be required to cover every worker, or pay a fine. Benefits would be more generous than they are now, across the board, as private companies would become required to match a government health care plan that Obama would create, offering an option to consumers now able to purchase only private plans. The result: private plans would increase theirbenefits to match those offered by the government plan, in order to compete.

* Under the McCain plan, "Those already sick are completely out of luck," the Op Ed piece says, since insurance companies would be "free to deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions."

* John McCain would reduce both state and federal regulation of big insurance companies, the news/analysis story says. In addition, Sen. McCain "proposes a big tax hike as the solution to our health care crisis," the Journal's Op Ed piece notes. "His plan would raise taxes on workers who receive health benefits, with the idea of encouraging employers to drop coverage. A study by the University of Michigan shows that the McCain tax hike on insurance "will lead employers to drop coverage for over 20 million Americans," the opinion piece says. What would happen to these people?, the article asks, and then answers its own question: "Mr. McCain would give them a small tax credit...and then tell to navigate the individual insurance market on their own." The tax credits would be "way too small," the article on the Op Ed page says, covering less than half the cost of policies today, and "far below the 75% that most employers offering coverage contribute."

* Barack Obama's plan would require that Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements to hospitals and doctors be based on patient outcomes (for example, lower cholesterol readings, etc.) rather than simply paying, regardless of outcomes, for procedures performed or services offered. Currently, the Op Ed piece notes, "insurers make money by dumping sick patients, not by keeping people healthy." Basing payments to hospitals and doctors on patient outcomes is a radical notion, to say the least.

* John McCain's plan contains no such provision.

For more information about the two candidates' health care plans, reference the Sept 16 edition of The Wall Street Journal. Be sure to look up both the news/analysis article on page A21 and the Op Ed piece on page A25.

If you are concerned about health care, or have the least bit of interest in this campaign issue, you will want to read these two stories, appearing in what is regarded by almost everyone as one of the most conservative newspapers in the country.

The news/analysis story was based, by the way, on two studies done on the McCain and Obama plans, one by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center and the other appearing in Health Affairs, described by reporter Meckler as "a peer-reviewed policy journal."

It is clear to me from a reading of these two detailed and well-researched background pieces on the '08 presidential election that Barack Obama's health care plan far and away reflects more of the principles of the New Spirituality.

mmmmmmm..

could it be the reverse, are you frightened to explore the ONe true living GOd and Jesus Christ who said I am the only way to eternal life and the Father, ONLY me- JEsus. You would have to then give up your ideas of harmonic vibration in order to transcend to the next level of a butterfly (with the 6million that HItler killed in order to transform them according to Walsh).

just a thought

AM
No. Not unless you accept HIm as your Lord and Savior, since as HE said, I will deny you before the Father, if you have denied me-as Lord (did you read this part?)

Have you ever heard of being like someone, since it is good that you would like to be like Jesus, and then realize that you are not actualy Jesus? That is a very important thing to remember, you can follow but that doesnt make you JEsus (unless of course you also are calling yourself God and the Messiah, along with performng miracles, and then will be soon hanging on a cross and then resurrected to later appear to your friends and family.

Are you doing this AM or planning to soon?

AM do you think that you are God?

DO you think that there really is no GOd, only us who run the universe?

AM can you create a planet? a star? can you change the weather? how about fix any bad habits that you have, permanently and live perfectly?

AM where does the universe end? and whats on the other side?

AM Is life real or just an illusion of light, with no purpose, where nothing is good or bad and nothing really matters because there is no god who even if there were wants nothing?

AM when you take your last breath, where will you go?

as said before the more i reead of his books lately (borrowed of course) the more I saw only circular, contradicting streams of thought IF I didnt pinch myself I would have thought that I was not really me but a trnascended energy mass of my former self, living life number 777, i think WLash thinks he is at like number 687, and that I am only a mirrored reflection of the subconsicousness in my vibrational state of flux before I reach full harmonic resonance with the one world force and explode into my godness, and begin my new path as a re-resurrected mini-Jesus. I think I began to even subconsciously giggle.

ok here is a miracle, VIc and I agree on something and who knows maybe alot:

YES the pharmaceutical, medical industry and insurance are all on the same team and this is no joke, they benefit from sick people not getting well or healthier. AS does probably half the industry in this country. Just imagine if people didnt overeat, excercised didnt smoke drink, etc. DO you know what would happen to their bottomline within 1 year???

This is the only way for the patient-consumer-citizen to stop the madness and greed, each starting at their own personal level adn assuming the control from the other end. It is not impossible.

Imagine if for one week noone bought gas, if that were possible?

People dont realize that as a huge group (and Walsh will like this) we can by our actions immediately impact with a huge dent industrys that have been desigend to take advantage of us.

What if everyone agreed we will not buy a single bus size SUV for one month?

Im with VIc on that also, healthcare has got to be shared and provided for everyone. And that can be done. IF we can spend what 50 million a month in Iraq, then we can certainly spend the money to make sure families can have coverage. It is called taking care of your own.

One of the themes emerging here (among many others, of course) is that the current health care system in the US is dominated by pharmaceutical companies and other organisation or actors that have a vested interest in keeping people ill. If that is true, then the question is: can anything be done to change that?

I would think that reorganising a system to emphasize prevention, to emphasize the need for self care, physical activity, moderation in diet and alcohol intake, etc. would make economic sense in the long run. Do you feel that the US system is currently oriented toward that?

Who is responsible for your health? Right now, the US system says, YOU, the individual, are. And we are, in many aspects. We can choose healthy lifestyles, better diets, alternative care, and nobody can stop us. But...eventually, unless death is blessedly instant, and unforeseen, we will all experience illness or injury.

And who is responsible for your treatment, when you do get sick? Unless you are the proverbial doctor who treats himself (and has a fool for a patient), you must depend on others for help.

Every health care system in the world assumes that individuals will have to pay expenses to access services. The difference between the US system and others, where national health care plans take place, is that in the US, these expenses are unfairly distributed, as are services. That is why you have a situation as above, where one person has tax-subsidized delivery of a baby, and another is paying for years afterwards, for the same services.

If you really, truly think that the US system is controlled by whatever factor, then wouldn't it make sense to at least discuss how expenses can be more evenly distributed. Wouldn't it make sense to do so on a national level, for economies of scale, as we currently do with primary education? And while we at least discuss this, if we truly think outside factors are manipulating the system, then it would be a revolutionary act if we started taking better care of ourselves, and each other, by emphasizing prevention.

Diana

Diana,
Yes - prevention! We've eaten ourselves into obesity and diabetes, heart disease and cancers. Genes supply some, but our lifestyles play a huge part (see now how the Japanese are showing signs of western diseases - that had been minimal until the 20th century across the population).

As far as 'redoing' anything and having the Government intercede.

Folks - trillions of dollars are about to be poured into 'junk mortgages/stocks/insurance items that have crippled our economy. Unlike the S&L; crisis - the debt the Government is taking on is BAD debt that cannot be salvaged. By not allowing the US system to work (capitalism - if you're in trouble, you sink) - we have negatively impacted the dollar - and have essentially begun the bankrupting of our nation.

The US doesn't have trillions of dollars. We don't have the $86BILLION for AIG. We should NOT have saved it.

No matter what the market does today - and for the next few weeks - all Congress is about to do is put a band-aid on an arterial wound. They've simply postponed the harsh reality that greed has bankrupted this nation - and while we can (as we did in the 1930s) get through this (and for pete's sake - every person should cut up their credit cards who have any debt on them) - putting off the inevitable is going to cost the individual MORE.

Healthcare? You cannot begin to look at such sweeping changes now - the priority for America is: shoring up the almighty dollar, getting the economy back on track - including saving Social Security - or, if you cannot - liquidating it properly, REGULATING all companies (socialism here we come), getting out of Afghanistan and Iraq -- we can no longer afford those albatrosses - only then, when all of this is completed, and for sure you know it is the TAXPAYER who is going to pay - can anyone begin to TAX CITIZENS for healthcare.

Neither candidate has a CLUE how they are gonna 'make' money - and shame on them both for saying they will limit taxation to 'the rich.' CANNOT HAPPEN. Won't happen. If you feel strapped for cash now - newsflash - the fallout from Wall Street is not over. The fallout has not yet reached AMERICA. It's coming though.

Spiritually speaking - you must do everything you can to keep healthy - and to keep a positive outlook. As dire as the reality is, we are America, and we will work our way out of this (likely without any help from the rest of the world).

The best thing anyone can do for their health - stop spending what you don't have. Stop living beyond your means. Pay off the debt. You will be able to sleep at night. You will 'see' yourself getting out of debt. Work towards your financial health, and see how your physical and spiritual health improve too!!!
