Gunn undergoes neck surgery
Posted September 15, 2008 6 :02 PM

Pitt fifth-year senior linebacker Adam Gunn underwent successful surgery this morning to have a plate fused to the broken vertebra in his neck, an injury suffered in the Panthers’ season opener.

“Everything went well,” said Ed Gunn, Adam’s father. “They said the recovery time was anywhere from three-to-six months, so he’s done for the season. The doctor said there are hundreds of players in the NFL playing with a plate. It was a precautionary thing.”

Gunn, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound starting strong-side linebacker, was injured in a helmet-to-helmet collision with teammate and fellow Kiski Area High School graduate Scott McKillop early in the third quarter of the 27-17 loss to Bowling Green on Aug. 30 at Heinz Field.

Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt has said the Panthers plan to petition the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility on Gunn’s behalf.
