The Nashville Cisco Users Group (NCUG) home page

WELCOME - Network Security & Information Security & Server Administrators & IT Managers & Systems Administrators & Network Administrators & Networkers & Physical Cable Plant & Low Voltage personnel, plus also teachers & trainers and USERS of CISCO equipment throughout Tennessee, southern Kentucky, Northern AL, Northern GA, & Northern MS.

We apologize for the sometimes less than tasteful banners (and popup ads) at the top and right margin of this web page, but this is a free webserver/website and everything we do is for free to technology end users and partners and schools, etc.

Also, we're sorry we're not webmasters, we're just infrastructure geeks, so please pardon our spelling and grammatical errors below.

Everyone is invited.  Even if you can't spell IT, or have never configured a Cisco device in your life.

Please permit or add the email address nashvillecisco@yahoo.com through your personal email spam filter or your company's email spam filter.

The Nashville Cisco Users Group (NCUG) offers:

* 35% off discounts at two technology book websites, and 20% off at a third. Plus 20% off all Boson Cisco Certification tools. 35% off at http://ciscopress.com and 35% off at http://www.oreilly.com/store/. And 20-25% off discount at http://wiley.com & McGraw Hill. Scroll down below for details and discount codes.

* NCUG offers free membership (no monthly, quarterly, or yearly dues, ever).

* Free e-mailing list (maximum of 1 or 2 emails/month unless you are job hunting and ask to be added to the NCUG job hunter email list). If you are job hunting, please email us at nashvillecisco@yahoo.com with the words JOB HUNTING in the subject line.

* Free meetings (no registration fees or attendance fees, ever), generally around 5:00pm the 3rd Tuesday of each month, and we often take December off for the holidays.

* Free dinner and free training or free presentations, plus free Cisco or free Cisco Press door prizes (and free Wiley/IEEE and O'Reilly Publishers door prizes) at every meeting.  You MUST stay until the end of the meeting for a chance to win the door prizes!

* This is not exclusively a Cisco users group, because most members or most members' companies use non-Cisco servers and non-Cisco info security and cable plant and non-Cisco network infrastructure electronics.

* Membership is not by invitation only, and this loosely knit, totally informal group is not exclusively for people whose business or home is in Nashville, TN. Based on our membership, this is more like the (Tennessee and Alabama and Georgia and Mississippi and Kentucky) Network Engineer and Internet and e-Commerce and Server Admin and Low Voltage/Cable Plant and Networkers and Information Security and Firewall and IDS/IPS and Physical Security and Network Security and Router & Switch & Wireless & Wi-Fi Users Group.

* Did you know that we have had past NCUG meetings where NCUG members who are parents brought their children to the meeting, because they wanted their children to learn about IT or just about networking in general?!? And did you know we have had spouses attend who know nothing about computers or info security or computer networking?!?

* If you hear of any local or regional or national or international or education or other grants that the completely non-profit NCUG could apply for, we would like to help some local K-12 schools apply for wireless grants to help their school provide Cisco IEEE 802.11 WiFi to their students. We feel that helping the children in our community will help them better prepare to be well-adjusted contributing members of society when they grow up. PLEASE FORWARD your grant information to nashvillecisco@yahoo.com any info on grants that you read about, hear about or you see online ASAP, both free grants and also matching grants. Thank you very much!

* We do apologize that we only check the nashvillecisco@yahoo.com emailbox only twice/week. Please be patient with us in that regard. And please remember to please add the email address nashvillecisco@yahoo.com through your personal or company's spam filter.

* NCUG is looking for new Steering Committee members. There are no requirements, other than your willingness to help us. If you are interested, please send an email to nashvillecisco@yahoo.com with the words JOIN STEERING COMMITTEE in the subject line plus some of your contact info so we can contact you. Thank you so much!

* Meetings: There is no one standard meeting place for NCUG every month. Just stay tuned to this website or get on our emailing list for invitations. To subscribe to our emailing list, just send an email to nashvillecisco@yahoo.com with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line.

* We would also like to have an NCUG meeting at YOUR office! We would also consider having a meeting outside of the metro Nashville, TN area, if we were persuaded that enough people would attend.

* ATTENTION Technical book readers = any NCUG members:
If you are willing to read a Cisco Press book or an O'Reilly book or a Wiley book cover to cover and write (in some cases) as little as a 3 full paragraph review of it, that technical book publisher will be willing to send you that book for free. For more details, please scroll down and contact our Wiley/CiscoPress/O'Reilly contact person in the technical book website discount codes below.

AGENDA:

2) Managing Unpredictability in IP Networks with Route Analytics
3) Live Demo

SPEAKERS:
1) Alex Henthorn-Iwane, VP Product Marketing Packet Design Inc., and
2) Sean Gilbert, Systems Engineer, Packet Design Inc.

ABSTRACT:
IP Networks are not by nature predictable in the way they deliver traffic, with routing automatically changing the paths of application traffic as network elements change state over time. The variability of application or service traffic delivery in large, complex IP networks can undermine engineering assumptions, resulting in misconfigurations, slowed or blocked troubleshooting, and suboptimal design and planning. This session will introduce route analytics and a new technology that Internet researcher Van Jacobson has coined “Route-Flow Fusion”—a combination of Netflow and real-time route analytics data that provides visibility, analysis and modeling of the volume, composition and dynamic movement of traffic across an entire network, with very light Netflow export overhead. The session will include an overview of route analytics, explain how flow data exported from a few key routers can be mapped network-wide over their actual routes to provide an always-accurate routing and traffic map, and then some example use cases such as “rewinding” the state of routing and traffic to a past point in time for accurate troubleshooting, simulating what will happen to network traffic when moving servers between data centers, and a demo of actual customer routing and traffic network event streams as recorded by route analytics.

PRE-READING:

Some white papers can be found on Packet Design's website at: http://www.packetdesign.com/solutions/solutions-enterprise.htm

http://www.networkworld.com/PacketDesign0315

White Paper "Network-Layer Management: Foundation for Predictable IP Services" by Packet Design. It is available at: http://www.webtorials.com/main/gold/PacketDesign/index.htm. This generic paper does a great job of addressing the need for a solid foundation for a robust IP network. For years, we've tried to simplify the network layer so that it becomes "transparent." Nevertheless, it's still the basis upon which everything in the upper layer depends. If it's unstable, the applications are unstable. Consequently, methodologies like Route Analytics that provide tools for diagnosing underlying network problems become absolutely essential.

Dinner and an iPOD NANO plus other door prizes were provided by Packet Design, plus additional book door prizes provided free by Cisco Press & also O'Reilly, plus wireless posters from Xirrus.

Now they are working on finishing the BOM, and finding out how a school like this one could buy Cisco equipment for their LAN and WLAN. So far their only choices to order Wireless LAN equipment has been to order HP. But this wireless site survey was performed with Cisco equipment, and so our Bill of Materials will be Cisco equipment. So we have to find out how to order Cisco equipment for a Sumner County School. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!.

* OCTOBER 2004 NCUG MEETING: Mitigating Risk With ProSys and Cisco Security Solutions: Wednesday October 27, 2004, 8am-12noon. "COMPLYING WITH GLB, SOX, HIPAA, AND BEYOND.
This event was a free Cisco Security seminar and free breakfast Wednesday morning October 27th from 8am-12noon. The contact for that event was Whitney Holt (wholt@prosysis.com <mailto:wholt@prosysis.com> or 615-301-5215).

MORE DETAILS ABOUT THIS EVENT: "It is imperative that companies address growing threats of viruses and worms and what affects these have on their bottom line. In addition, companies are being challenged by government regulations to protect the privacy and security of personal and confidential information.

These current business drivers apply to any company, large or small, that stores, transfers, or has access to employees’ and customers’ private information. This presentation highlighted three of those laws: Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB), Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). We will discuss how together ProSys and Cisco security solutions can be positioned to address their specific requirements."
