THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Customs and Central Excise is undertaking a month-long countrywide `street-by-street' survey for tracking unregistered taxable service providers as also those who default on service tax payment despite being registered.
According to Mr G.A. Das, Assistant Commissioner, Central Excise and Customs, Thiruvananthapuram, elaborate advance preparation had been made to ensure that the survey covered every nook and corner. Around 400 additional vehicles had been deployed. Details of unregistered taxable service providers were collected from the Internet as well as from the department database.
Unregistered service providers identified would be booked and subjected to the law of the land. Major cases would be reported to the media. The Department would work in tandem with the Income Tax authorities on how to deal with evaders. The aim is to bring over 1.5 lakh unregistered service providers under the service tax net, the spokesman added.
