Classic Video Game Glitches

Can't Count to 256 - Pac-Man (Namco/arcade)

Since Pac-Man's original scoring board only runs on an 8-bit byte, it can only count up to 255. For those incredibly skilled enough to make it to the 256th board, they were able to experience a tremendous screen glitch with the counter resetting back to zero and fruit and blank spaces appearing on-screen. Nowadays, that just doesn't happen.

There was also that glitch with the rabbit from Super Mario 64, and the way to jump up the endless staircase. My favorite is Missingno, though lol. They really should've put that one in.

Mario Kart has more than that glitch. On Wario's Stadium at the very beginning on the bumps you can jump over the wall. I guess you can call it a secret, but I highly doubt you are supposed to do it... it works in the re-release on the wii, as well...

This is interesting about Pacman's 256 board. Way back before the Ms Pacman days in the 80's, I bought Ken Houston's Pacman patterns book and after about 2 months of memorizing them, I was doing really well on Pacman. My friends thought I was a wiz and I never told them that I was just following patterns to finish the board. I never saw the 256th board, but did make it well into the 100's to the point where the big dots did NOT turn the monsters blue. I had to finish the board with without eating the monsters. This 256th board is news to me.
