the 2008 Philippine Statistical Yearbook

As a commitment to the realization of the government’s national development agenda through continuous generation, production and dissemination of timely, relevant and useful products and services, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) releases the 2008 Philippine Statistical Yearbook (PSY). The PSY is one of the major publications of the NSCB which serves as a guide to data users in the formulation of plans, programs and policies in both the government and private sectors as well as a reference to researchers in the academic community. It is also intended to serve the information needs of its clients in the global community.

Best Online Statistical Information Dissemination System Contest LaunchedBest Online Statistical Information Dissemination System Contest Launched

The search is on for the Best Online Statistical Information Dissemination System in the government. The contest as part of the nationwide celebration of the 19th NSM this October gives due importance to the dissemination of demand-driven statistics in governance through the use of ICT. As such, it is open to all government agencies that own and operate web-enabled information dissemination systems. The contest focuses on the impact of the system; that is, how the system is best able to provide its users with the required information. Other parameters include sustainability, timeliness, and content. A cash prize of P25,000 courtesy of the Department of Trade and Industry, the host for the 19th NSM Opening Ceremony awaits the winning entry.

Price of Fertilizers to Increase Production Cost of Agriculture by 0.15 percentPrice of Fertilizers to Increase Production Cost of Agriculture by 0.15 percent

Fertilizers, as intermediate input to the production process, account for 30-40 percent of total cost of production of agricultural crops. Fertilizers are natural or synthetic chemical substance or mixture used to enrich soil so as to promote plant growth. The three common nutritional elements that are present in fertilizers are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Fertilizers are commonly used in food crops like palay and corn. Ideally, palay farmers should use six bags of fertilizer to ensure a harvest of four to seven tons of rice per hectare, though many farmers apply more to boost production. Meanwhile, 2.96 of fertilizer bags are needed for white corn and 4.80 bags for yellow corn. Banana, which is one of the major agricultural crops, needs six lbs of fertilizers per tree.
