Guidetti's Germans have nothing to lose |
Giovanni Guidetti, Christiane Furst and Cornelia Dumler celebrate |
Germany have already surpassed their expectations by finishing second in Pool B of the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship in Sapporo.
Their inspiring 3-1 victory over reigning Olympic champions China gave them a 4-1 record from five matches, their only loss coming at the hands of the Russians.
They now face an even harder time in the second round in Osaka's Pool F, where they take on the powerful Brazilians, United States, Netherlands and Puerto Rico.
Led by influential captain Angelina Grun and key spiker Birgit Thumm, the Germans have played beyond themselves.
And Italian Guidetti knows they cannot relax if they want to reach the semi-finals.
"For sure, if we are only at 80 per cent, we will start to lose matches," said Guidetti.
"Maybe we can win the rest of our matches but we need to keep it at a high level.
"I have to give credit to my girls. They surprise me everyday and they play with great heart. It's an honour to be the coach of this team."
Germany's first match in Pool F is against regional rivals Netherlands on Wednesday.
They take a 2-1 record to Osaka based on the teams who qualified with them from Pool B.
In the Pool F standings, they lie fourth behind Brazil, Russia and United States.
