Washington County commissioners pick Harker for HD34

BEAVERTON -- The Washington County Board of Commissioners on Thursday unanimously appointed Chris Harker, a newcomer to public office, to represent state House District 34.

Harker, 54, of unincorporated West Haven, murmured "Thank you very much" after the 2½-hour selection process taped at Tualatin Valley Community Television studios.

He replaces Suzanne Bonamici through Dec. 31. She was chosen in April to replace Brad Avakian, who resigned from Senate District 17 to become state labor commissioner.

Chairman Tom Brian said Harker's insights into health care issues, his small business expertise and his science and technical background would make him a good addition to the Legislature.

Harker was one of three candidates -- and the top choice of Democratic precinct committee people -- for the position. He is president and founder of Cayuse, a software company that helps users obtain federal grants.

The other candidates were Barbara Maloney, 58, a Beaverton business communications trainer, and Jason Yurgel, 47, of West Slope, a self-employed legal investigator.

Harker presumably will be the party's choice for the November ballot, facing Republican Piotr Kuklinski for a two-year term.
