St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, located on 136 E. Magnolia Ave., suffered minor tree damage Saturday afternoon from high winds and torrential rain of Tropical Storm Fay.

The oak tree, said to be more than 100 years old, snapped in two, leaving an almost 20-foot stump in the ground. No structural damage to the chapel of St. Dunstan's was reported.

As Tropical Storm Fay continues to push through Auburn and the rest of southeast Alabama, The Plainsman will continue to post updates on additional damage as it occurs.

Welcome to Auburn for the start of another exciting and rewarding academic year on the Plains. Whether you spent the past few months working, traveling, spending time with family or taking classes, Susie and I hope you enjoyed the summer.

We are excited about the beginning of the fall term and hope you share our excitement. For returning students and those new to campus, Auburn has much to offer both in and out of the classroom.

If you haven’t already done so, we encourage you to visit the new Student Center that opened just a few days ago and will serve as a hub for Auburn student life. This recently-completed addition to the Auburn landscape transforms the look of the central area of campus near Haley Center, Jordan-Hare Stadium and the Quad Residence Halls.

As your Dean of Students, I am pleased to welcome you to Auburn University and to the Auburn family. I am particularly pleased this fall to be able to welcome you home to your new Student Center.

I cordially invite you to come and see what is available to you in this wonderful new facility. We have seven eating venues scattered throughout the building: au bon pain, Chef’s Table, Chick-fil-A, Coyote Jack’s, Mama Leone’s, Outtakes and a full-service Starbucks. With Wi-fi throughout, the Auburn University Student Center lounges and balconies are excellent places to study and meet up with your friends. You can check your e-mail on one of the computer kiosks, get your bike repaired at the bike shop or stop by the game room — the Auburn University Student Center has been designed specifically with your needs in mind. It’s even a main hub for Tiger Transit.
