Last month in Westminster Cathedral I set out the purpose of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation. It will concern itself with the six leading faiths: Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jewish. Today we launch the first of a series of partnerships to give effect to that purpose.
While we as Christians do not believe in forcing the Christian faith upon anyone for it must be by faith - not compulsion, it is also true that Christianity is not compatible with other religions. People have the right to choose any religion they desire, but this does not mean that all religions point to the same God. It is not possible for Christianity to join with other religions without abandoning the core principles of Christianity. The Bible and Jesus Christ Himself demands sole loyalty in Him. We do not make salvation exclusionary, God Himself has done this. Consider the following passages:
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
1 John 2:22-23
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
Christ means Messiah or savior of the world. Anyone who denies that Jesus Christ is the only Savior is a liar and does not have a relationship with God. People are free to choose any religion they desire or even to choose no religion, but this does not change the fact that unless we believe that Jesus died for us on the cross and receive the gift of salvation by faith, we will die in our sins.
Rick Warren is free to choose another faith or depart from the faith; however, this does not change the fact that there is salvation in no other name but Jesus Christ. To have unity with other religions, they require us to take a 'non-exclusionary' position. In other words, we cannot say that Jesus is the only way. Take heed to the words of scripture concerning this very topic in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
We are commanded to preach the gospel of the cross and call others out of the world, not depart from the scriptures and join them. We are to come out from among them and the Lord will accept us. Our message to the world is the same. We lift up salvation through the cross of Jesus Christ and call others to come out from among them to join the family of faith in Christ. We are not called to destroy other faiths, nor are we called to partner with other faiths as many of our evangelical leaders are doing. We are called to preach the cross, for Jesus said that if He is lifted up (by His death on the cross John 12:32-33), He will draw ALL men to Himself. Without this message, salvation remains a mystery to the world and world religions.
