Game with Fame:

Recap – Dream Theater

Published December 18, 2007

Game with Fame took over the Hudson Hotel in New York City for a two hour session of Crimson Skies®: High Road to Revenge™ and Halo® 3 with the guys from Dream Theater. The event took place in a meeting room on a 42-inch HDTV for the best quality experience. Mike Portnoy (DreamTheaterMP), John Petrucci (DreamTheaterJP), John Myung (DreamTheater JM), James LaBrie (DreamTheaterJL), and Jordan Rudess (DreamTheaterJR) took turns playing the gamers in dogfights and Team Slayer matches.

The band was thrilled (and flattered) to receive so many messages from their fans. A few of the Gamertags even had references to their music or band name. Once the session closed, each band member recorded a voicemail thanking everyone and sent it along to their entire friends list.

I got to play with my favorite band tonight and it was a blast … no, an honor. We had to teach Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci to use the D-Pad when you wanted to talk on Halo 3. The first match, they were just talking away and we had no idea. I hope that the band will get on again soon. I'm never taking them off my friends list even if they never play again! Thanks for the chance to play with the most talented band out there. You guys ROCK!

I was just e-mailing to say I had a blast getting the chance to play with Dream Theater many times this evening. Some friends and I were the first few people to get invited by them, and we started out by playing a few games on Halo 3, which was an awesome surprise because I had no idea they were going to be on that game. The band at first was trying to figure out the controls, but soon they were putting up a challenge! A while later they all logged off and got onto Crimson Skies, where I had the pleasure of chatting with John Petrucci for a few minutes in the lobby. Thank you so much for letting me get the opportunity to game and chat with my favorite band.

So, yesterday I was surfin' the Net looking up stuff on xbox.com when I came across a link saying that Dream Theater would be online playing Crimson Skies. Being a hardcore prog-rock junkie, how could I pass on this, so  I sent 'em an invite. Later that night, I noticed that I had a couple of extra friends I didn't have the day before. John and Mike had invited me to play with them! It was insane to play Halo 3 with all the guys! I took some screenshots and a short clip of it just to brag about it to my friends. My friend and I have been listening to this band for a while now, but never would I imagine that they'd be on my team in a Slayer game. I want to thank Microsoft for putting together such a community on XBL and for bringing people together from childhood friends to soldiers and their inspirations. Thanks to James, John, Johnny, Jordan, and Mike for not only taking the time to get online with a bunch of guys who certainly look up to them, but for putting together some of the best composed music I have ever come across. Hope you guys keep on playing and see you soon!

I got to Game with Fame! It was so cool! I was trying forever to find and play with them on Crimson Skies but I finally got a game in with DreamTheaterMP (Mike Portnoy – drums). He wasn't the best, but it was great teaching someone famous to play. It was a great experience and I can't wait for the next Game with Fame. I thought I would never get to play with one of them but I did. Thank you, Microsoft and Xbox.com.

I played Halo 3 with Dream Theater. It was an amazing experience! Dream Theater are my favourite band and John Petrucci is my guitar hero. The band were great fun to play with! I spoke to Jordan about his equipment and just any old thing really. My favourite moment was when John said, "Hey this is John Petrucci and I'm going to kill you all!" John Petrucci may own me at guitar but when it comes to Halo 3 I own him. Thank you, XBOX!

I was only able to get into the first Halo 3 game with Dream Theater and well to be honest, the band didn't really know how to play. Regardless, I had a great time playing with them, but I feel really bad about blowing John Petrucci up with a Wraith since he's my guitar idol. Also, the voice messages they sent out after playing were pretty awesome too. You need to get them back on Xbox LIVE® for some battle of the bands on Rock Band™.

And so … the dream is over. First, I want to thank Dream Theater, tonight was one of the best days in my life. Playing with them on Xbox LIVE was an incredible experience. My two passions at the same time! Amazing! I'm an Italian fan of DT since 1992. I remember the first day that I had the opportunity to listen to the first demo cassette of a masterpiece like Images & Words. I was only 11 years old, but for me it was an incredible shock that conditioned the rest of my life. I have to say two words about the ability of John Petrucci with the Xbox® 360. He's a Halo 3 killer … or … it's more correct to say, an incredible cheater! Hahah! Thanks again guys, you were, you are, and you will be the main soundtrack of my life. And thanks a lot, Xbox LIVE for this opportunity. I will never forget this day. Ciao!
