Have at it: What if Favre stayed?

You knew this was coming, right? The Green Bay Packers are 3-3 but have matched their loss total for the entire 2007 season. They are tied for first place in the NFC North but clearly won't have a cakewalk to the division title, despite what appears to be a pretty pedestrian year in the Upper Midwest.

Rodgers

The Packers face that scenario even after executing a relatively smooth quarterback transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers. Through his first six starts. Rodgers has compiled the NFL's seventh-best passer rating at 98.0 and has thrown nearly three times as many touchdown passes (11) as interceptions (four) while playing through a sprained right shoulder.

But I know you're thinking it: Would the Packers have a better record with Favre? (Incidentally, Favre has the NFL's fourth-best passer rating (103.0) while leading the 3-2 New York Jets.)

There's nothing better to do right now, so why not "Have at it?"

It's hard to pin any of Green Bay's losses directly on Rodgers. You could make an argument that injuries have been the Packers' biggest enemy this season. Nevertheless, here are some questions to help focus the discussion:

  • Would Favre have engineered a comeback at Tampa Bay or found a way to overcome a three-point deficit against Atlanta?
  • On the flip side, would Favre have scuttled at least one of the team's victories with a four-interception disaster? (Come on, you know he is capable of it).
  • Would the training camp tension of a Favre return have negatively impacted the team?

As always, use the comments section below or hit the mailbag. We'll publish a sampling of your responses, as well as my own take, Friday morning.

For reference purposes, here are Rodgers' statistics in the Packers' three losses this season:
