Create a Member or Guest Account

Two types of user accounts are available on Boardgame News: Members and Guests.

Members

BGN memberships cost $25 for 12 months. Members receive the following benefits:
  • Access to previews for the Nuremberg and Essen game conventions with exclusive designer interviews,
  • Ability to comment on news items and columns, and
  • A chance to win free games in drawings that take place roughly once a month; your chance of winning is based on the number of members at the end of the month.
Four randomly-chosen BGN members will win one of the following items at the end of October 2008:
  • Wits & Wagers: The breakthrough party game from North Star Games that makes trivia less of a tedious holiday party activity in which someone drags Ye Olde Pursuit from the closet and makes people jump through asinine hoops for two hours. No, in this game everyone is playing on each turn and having no knowledge of obscure history isn't a game killer.

  • Vineta: It's time for you to raise your mighty Thor-like hammer and mete out some punishment to foolish mortals. You and the other players are gods who are slowly sinking the island of Vineta, but ideally you can bring your followers to safety and preserve the part of the island where your temple is located. BGN is giving away three copies of this game.
To become a BGN Member, click to head to the registration page. Note: You must use your real first and last name as your Screen Name.

Once you've registered, you need to hand over the loot using one of the following options:

Yearly subscription through PayPal – you'll pay $25 now, and $25 will be deducted from your PayPal account annually, ensuring you continued access to previews and game giveaways and me a small but steady flow of income.
Monthly subscription through PayPal – you'll pay $5 now, and $5 will be deducted from your PayPal account each month. I'll think of you when I buy a sandwich for lunch.
A one-time payment of $25 through PayPal.
A one-time payment through Moneybookers – use wericmartin@gmail.com as the receiving email address and $25 (or whatever else you might feel like sending) as the amount.

If you prefer not to deal with online payment sites, you can mail a check or money order made out to either W. Eric Martin or Boardgame News to:

W. Eric Martin
PO Box 2841
Concord, NH 03302

You can also donate additional funds to support Boardgame News. Or, more specifically, to support me, the BGN editor. I'd love to spend all of my working hours on BGN – posting news, interviewing designers, reviewing games, completing all the secret projects on my to-do list – but at this point, I still need to write articles on packing stations and cable network improvements and other non-game-related topics. As you might imagine, I greatly appreciate all support, and thank you for reading.
Guests

With a Guest account, you can post comments on Boardgame News but you receive no other benefits: no peeks at the unbelievably massive and comprehensive Nuremberg and Essen previews; no chance of winning cool games in the random drawings; no warm feeling inside late at night.

If you can somehow survive without those benefits, click to head to the registration page and create a BGN Guest account.

Note: You must use your real first and last name as your Screen Name.

What happens next?

Once you've completed the registration form – whether as Member or Guest – you'll receive an automated email; click on the link in that email to finalize your account. You'll then receive a message welcoming you to BGN and restressing the benefits of Membership. (Yes, I'm shameless.) If you want to become a member, the enclosed link will bring you back to this page so that you can review the payment options.

Once you've activated the account, you can log in using the Username and Password you chose during registration. (Tip: Use the LOGIN button on any page.) I have to flip the Member switch manually, something that typically takes less than a day; you'll receive a note from me once that happens, then you'll have immediate access to the current Convention Preview and be entered into the current month's drawing for free games (as well as drawings in future months, of course).

Questions?
If you still have questions about Membership or anything else, please email me at subscriptions@boardgamenews.com.

Four randomly-chosen BGN members will win one of the following items at the end of August 2008:
  • Say Anything: The new party game from North Star Games that will almost inevitably lead to someone snorting soda through their nose. Well, it will if you play correctly. For more details on the game play, check out my review. BGN is giving away two copies of this game.

  • Reels & Deals: A movie-themed card game in which you're trying to put together the ideal cast and crew in order to make the best pic.

  • Syl-la-bles: A word game that pushes you to create bigger and bolder words since your score is based on the length of your answer.
