Concussions force Texas A&M;'s Stephens to quit football

01:48 AM CDT on Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Associated Press

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M team doctors have told freshman linebacker Derrick Stephens he cannot play football any longer because of multiple concussions.

"It hurt my heart. That was my passion right there," Stephens said in a story for Wednesday's San Antonio Express-News. "To have somebody tell me that I can't play anymore – shoot me dead."

Stephens said he received the medical release because of concussions suffered in high school and in his short collegiate career. He put the number at four or five.

Stephens red-shirted last season.

He said the school would honor his scholarship and he planned to apply for A&M's business school.
