Larry Maddox – 2006 Coach

When Larry Maddox retired in 2005, he was the most decorated head coach in Anderson University athletics history.

His men's and women's track and men's and women's cross country teams won 53 conference championships 26 NAIA District 21 titles and 13 NCCAA championships. Individually, Maddox was named Coach of the Year in the conference 45 times, district 23 times and NCAA 13 times. He has also coached 50 track and 23 cross country All-Americans as well as more than 100 Academic All-Americans.

Additionally, he has been the President of the NAIA Cross Country Coaches and a NCAA Great Lakes Regional representative. He also worked with the US Olympic Team in 1996 at the Atlanta games.

Maddox came to Anderson University as a student from Winfield, W.V., in the fall of 1961. He earned two letters in both track and cross country and was team captain in the latter in 1964.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Anderson in 1965 and added a master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Dayton in 1976. He was also USATF Level I and II certified.

During his student years at AU, he was involved in Sachem Social Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Prior to returning to AU, he had coaching stops at Shawnee and Winfield High Schools.

Maddox and his wife Joan reside in Anderson and have two daughters Vicki and Karla.

Anderson University is proud to name Larry Maddox to the Athletic Hall of Fame.
