Everything You Need to Know
About Conducting a Book-A-Thon

WHAT IS A BOOK-A-THON?
Modeled after a classic walk-a-thon, the Book-a-Thon, sponsored by Kehot Publication Society,
is an event that encourages Jewish Literacy. It is ideal for individuals of all ages, affiliations and backgrounds, who wish to participate in a program to read age appropriate Jewish books while
making a valuable contribution to their local libraries. The dates for this three week event will be,
G-d willing: November 4- November 25, 2007

HOW EXACTLY DOES THE BOOK-A- THON WORK? A step-by-step guide
Each participant receives a packet consisting of a sponsor sheet to list donors, a reading card to list books that are read, and a prize brochure. Adults and children who are committed to partake in the program find donors who will sponsor them in their reading efforts. Any donation amount is welcome, either for a certain amount per book, or for any set amount agreed upon.

Any books are acceptable to read, which are age appropriate and contain Jewish content. (If a child
is participating, the parent should sign the reading card as verification that books were actually read.) Parents can read to their children.

All money raised by donations is strictly for the benefit of the school or library designated by the participant, and 100% goes directly to purchase, from Kehot Publication Society needed books, workbooks, tapes or videos for their organization. In addition, this year’s Book-a-Thon funds can be used to purchase a select group of books from Feldheim and HaChai publications through Kehot.
Book-a-Thon funds are applied at full price only, and cannot be combined with any other discounts.

Donor checks are made out to Kehot Publication Society, a subsidiary of Merkos L'inyonei Chinuch,
a non-profit, tax-deductible organization. Credit will be immediately applied to the account of the
school or library of choice.

PRIZE INFORMATION
In order to provide an incentive for people, particularly children, to participate in the book-a-thon,
prizes will be awarded based on the amount of proceeds received. A full variety of Jewish books, puzzles, games and electronics are available on various levels for children and adults. Participants
may choose only one prize in the price range of the dollar amount they raised. They submit their choice to their organization or directly to Kehot Publication Society, together with their donations. All prizes are approved by our rabbinic and parent advisory board, and comply with both safety and education standards.

WHAT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?
1 As an organization, inform Kehot Publication Society that you wish to register for this event, so we
can send you all needed materials and advertisements, such as posters, fliers, sponsor sheets, prize brochures and press releases. All materials will be mailed to you prior to Book-a-Thon dates. Registration, materials and supplementary programming are FREE of charge.

2 When you receive your materials, give them out to your participants and inform them of the
Book- a-Thon guidelines and appropriate deadlines for submitting responses. It is crucial to the
success of the reading program to generate an interest and enthusiasm to participate. We provide
a full compliment of incentive ideas and programming to motivate and inspire children and adults to become very active and successful in this project of building libraries.

WHERE DO I FIND PARTICIPANTS?
Promote this event through a mailing, e-mail, flyers, memos, and newsletters. You will be amazed at the amount of generosity that students, friends, family members, and business contacts will show, if you enthusiastically involve them to support and participate in a literacy project.
