Greater Pittsburgh Area Schools Display Support As Penguins Engage Stanley Cup Finals

The Pittsburgh Penguins have added a new dimension to their community outreach program with promotions highlighting the Penguins drive to the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins gave all middle and intermediate schools in the Greater Pittsburgh area an opportunity to win prizes benefiting their school when they entered the team’s “Student Signs for Stanley” contest.

Each school was judged on a video presentation of the students’ creative use of signage in and around the school with an emphasis on creativity, design and school spirit.  Contest rules and instructions are available here.

The Penguins have a special long-standing partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.

Both organizations have joined forces to provide at-risk, inner-city children with an after-school tutoring program titled “Power Hour.”

The program is designed to improve academic performance for children experiencing difficulty at their local schools. The overall goal is to ensure upward movement for each child through the educational system.

The Penguins provide a variety of incentives for the children to obtain by earning points for completing homework assignments and reaching specific goals.

The “Power Hour” after school program has proved quite successful at the local Boys & Girls Clubs.

A delight for children of all ages, Pittsburgh Penguins mascot Iceburgh not only provides Penguins fans with energetic game night entertainment but this large, fluffy bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area.

Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all Penguins events and appearances.

In 2005, the “Iceburgh Goes to School” program was created with Iceburgh visiting local elementary schools for question & answer sessions with the students. He also serves as a unique “guest reader” at elementary and middle schools. His skill with animation entertains the students as they listen to their official book reader.

Along with a host of community festivals, fairs and fundraisers, Iceburgh’s annual community calendar includes visits to the Western PA School for the Blind Family Day, Western PA School for the Deaf, Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides Walk, City of Pittsburgh’s Mascot Skate, Heinz Regional History Center benefits and a variety of Relay for Life event locations.
