Founded in 1858, the Sängerbund has long been a significant contributor among German-American organizations in maintaining and promoting its cultural heritage.
Having endured the consequences of the Civil War, two World Wars and the Depression years, the organization, originally based in Hartford, has made its home in Newington since 1966.
At the heart of its activities are the Choral groups, which meet each Friday evening from September through June. The Men's, Ladies' and Mixed Choruses have won many awards in the Annual competition among similar groups throughout Connecticut and New England area.
The Folkdance Group also is dedicated to the perpetuation of our German heritage and has performed at many functions with great success and public acclaim.
A brief history of the organization would not be complete without reference to such major events as the Bierfest and ChristkindlMarkts (Christmas Bazaars).
Since 1984, Bierfests
featuring bands from Germany have been a significant club activity. Held every other year, these festivals have been highly successful in bringing together the German-American community both locally and from throughout Connecticut in an atmosphere of congeniality and good fellowship. It is truly an international event as evidenced by the response of residents within the town of Newington.
There is much to be enjoyed in being a part of the club as the description of HSB activities indicates.
The club is open every Friday evening throughout the year, so come on down and welcome, in German "Willkommen."
We are the Hartford Sängerbund Dancers. In 1985, we came together as a recreational folk dance group. Since then, we have enhanced events of the Hartford Sängerbund with performances at the Faschings-, Strauss and Anniversary Balls, staged folklore re-enactments at ChristkindlMarkts and mounted theme events like the Mexican night. Under the dancers leadership, the Hartford Sängerbund began to participate in the Steuben Parade in New York City, an annual parade that celebrates the contributions of German immigrants to American life and culture. Outside of our club, the dance group has performed regularly at the International Festival in Boston, a five-day celebration of ethnic heritage in the World Trade Center, that attracts thousands of visitors.
We have entertained at events of civic organizations and staged the opening ceremonies of the statewide German-American Day, celebrated every year at the Aqua Turf Resort in Southington, CT. We are always happy to welcome new members. If you would like convivial friends, need some exercise and enjoy dancing, come join us on Monday nights (September through May) at 7:30 p.m. at the Hartford Sängerbund.
The Hartford Sängerbund Chorus is the backbone of this wonderful club for almost 140 years. It is one of the oldest German singing organizations in the country. Established in 1858, two years before Abraham Lincoln became president of this beautiful country of ours and also before the Civil War. We are very proud of our past accomplishments, especially the concerts we give twice a year that give pleasure to many of our friends and families in German and English songs. We also participate in many other affairs.
We invite you to join our chorus and our club as a member. Our rehearsals are Friday evenings. After rehearsals, you can participate in our fun and Gemuetlichkeit in the club's beautiful Grill Room.
Food and refreshments are also available. To be German is not essential, singing in any language is international so try it. We have openings in our chorus. Come and see us on Friday nights. Men and women are welcome.
