Paris To Decide 3 Singles, 1 Doubles Slot

The final three positions for the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai will be determined this week at the BNP Paribas Masters. There are 11 players in contention to qualify for the prestigious eight-player field, which will take place Nov. 9-16.

Going into the last tournament of the regular season, the Nos. 6-8 players are Andy Roddick with 369 points, Juan Martin del Potro (354) and Gilles Simon (341). Spaniard David Ferrer (338), who reached last year's final in Shanghai, slipped from No. 7 to No. 9 and trails Simon by three points. Both del Potro and Simon passed Ferrer with semifinal results in Basel and Lyon, respectively.

Other players within reach are: No. 10 James Blake (310), No. 11 Stanislas Wawrinka (301), No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (290), No. 14/last year's champion David Nalbandian (275), No. 15 Fernando Verdasco (268), No. 16 Gael Monfils (264) and No. 17 Robin Soderling (258). No. 13 Fernando Gonzalez withdrew from Paris.

This week in Paris, there are multiple scenarios how a player could qualify for Tennis Masters Cup. Here's a look at the leading contenders and the different ways they may get in (daily updates will be available throughout the tournament on ATPtennis.com):

6) Andy Roddick
- Qualifies with semifinal, final or title
.
- Qualifies with Round of 16 and no more than two of the following happens: del Potro and Simon reach SFs, Ferrer reaches final, Blake or Wawrinka or Tsonga win title.
- Qualifies with QF and no more than two of the following happens: del Potro reaches SF. Simone or Ferrer reach Final. Blake or Wawrinka win title.

7) Juan Martin del Potro (pictured)
- Qualifies with final or title
.
- Qualifies with Round of 16 and no more than one of the following happens: Simon or Ferrer reach SFs, Blake, Wawrinka reach final, Tsonga or Nalbandian win title.
- Qualifies with QF and no more than two of the following happens: Roddick reaches Round of 16, Simon and Ferrer reach SF, Blake finals, Wawrinka or Tsonga wins.
- Qualifies with SF and no more than two of the following happens: Roddick reaches SF, Simon or Ferrer reaches final and Blake or Wawrinka wins title.

8) Gilles Simon
- Qualifies with final or title.

- Qualifies with loss in first match and none of the following happens: Ferrer reaches Round of 16, Blake reaches the SF, Wawrinka or Tsonga reaches the final, Nalbandian, Verdasco, Monfils or Soderling win title.
- Qualifies with Round of 16 and no more than one of the following happens: Del Potro reaches Round of 16. Ferrer reaches QF, Blake, Wawrinka or Tsonga reach final, Nalbandian, Verdasco, Monfils or Soderling win title.
- Qualifies with QF and no more than one of the following happens: del Potro reaches Round of 16, Ferrer reaches SF, Blake or Wawrinka reach Final. Tsonga or Nalbandian or Verdasco win title.
- Qualifies with SF and no more than two of the following happen: del Potro reaches SF, Ferrer reaches final, Blake or Wawrinka win title.

9) David Ferrer
- Qualifies with final or title.

- Qualifies with Round of 16 and none of the following happens: Simon reaches Round of 16, Blake reaches SF, Wawrinka or Tsonga reach final, Nalbandian, Verdasco, Monfils or Soderling win title.
- Qualifies with QF and no more than one of the following happens: del Potro reaches Round of 16, Simon reaches QF, Wawrinka reaches final, Tsonga, Nalbandian, Verdasco or Monfils win title.
- Qualifies with SF and no more than two of the following happens: Roddick reaches Round of 16, del Potro and Simon reach SFs, Wawrinka or Tsonga win title.

10) James Blake
- Qualifies with title.

- Qualifies with SF and no more than one of the following happens: del Potro and Simon reach Round of 16, Wawrinka or Tsonga reach final, Verdasco, Monfils, Nalbandian and Soderling wins title.
- Qualifies with final and no more than two of the following happens: Roddick reaches Round of 16, del Potro and Simon reach semifinals, Wawrinka wins title.

11) Stanislaw Wawrinka
- Qualifies with Paris title.

- Qualifies with SF no more than one of the following happens: Simon and Ferrer reach Round of 16, Blake reaches SF, Tsonga reachs the final, Verdasco or Nalbandian or Soderling wins title.
- Qualifies by reaching final and no more than two of the following happens: Roddick reaches Round of 16, del Potro reaches QF, Simon or Ferrer reaches SF, Blake or Tsonga win title.

12) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
- Qualifies with Paris title

- Qualifies by reaching final and no more than one of the following happens: del Potro wins a round, Simon or Ferrer reach QFs. Wawrinka, Nalbandian or Verdasco win title.

13) Fernando Gonzalez
- Has withdrawn from Paris and now cannot qualify for Shanghai.

14) David Nalbandian
- With Title and no more than two of the following happens: Roddick reaches Round of 16. Del Potro reaches QF. Simon, Ferrer reach semifinals. Blake reaches final.
- With Final and none of the following can happen: Simon and Ferrer reach Round of 16, Blake and Wawrinka reach SF, Tsonga, Verdasco, Monfils, Soderling do not win Paris.

15) Fernando Verdasco
– Must win title and no more than one of the following happens: del Potro wins a match. Simon or Ferrer reach SF. Blake reaches final.

16) Gael Monfils
– Must win title and no more than one of the following happens: del Potro wins a match. Simon reaches QF. Ferrer reaches SF. Blake or Tsonga reach final.

17) Robin Soderling
– Must win title and no more than 1 of the following can happen: Del Potro wins a match, Simon reaches QF. Wawrinka reaches SF. Blake or Wawrinka or Tsonga reach Final. Nalbandian, Verdasco or Monfils win Paris.

DOUBLES RACE: No. 5 Bjorkman/Ullyett and No. 6 Dlouhy/Paes qualified last week for the Tennis Masters Cup, leaving one spot remaining with three teams in contention going into Paris. Here is a look at the doubles scenarios:

7) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski will qualify if:
1) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski lose in 1st round or 2nd round and Coetzee/Moodie lose first match and Melo/Sa do not win Paris.
2) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski lose in QF and Coetzee/Moodie lose 1st match and Melo/Sa do not win Paris.
3) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski lose in SF and Coetzee/Moodie lose before SF.
4) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski reach Final.

8) Coetzee/Moodie will qualify if:
1) Coetzee/Moodie reach QF and Fyrstenberg/Matkowski do not reach the Semi-Final and Melo/Sa do not win Paris.
2) Coetzee/Moodie reach SF and Fyrstenberg/Matkowski do not reach the Final.
3) Coetzee/Moodie reach F and Fyrstenberg/Matkowski do not win Paris.
4) Coetzee/Moodie win Paris.

9) Melo/Sa will qualify if: they win the Paris title and Fyrstenberg/Matkowski and Coetzee/Moodie lose before the semifinals.
