TechComb: a new map, by SLAM
I'll be releasing a map called TechComb soon. I'm working on it every day, and the brunt of it seems to have come out very well. I just have some finishing touches to add and it should be done.
The TechComb is an alien ship who's inside resembles a technological honeycomb. You have to "escape" from the ship (not hard, all you have to do is drop into the pond way down below. Guess the aliens thought that would keep you in, but they haven't tangled with Nerfers yet!) and get to your arsenal nearby. As you look around though, you realize that the aliens picked a whole chunk of the Earth right off the surface! They are carrying it in a life support field while flying through space, so the gravity and atmosphere are normal down there. Apparently, they also picked up the power generator, because lights are still on below.
Anyway, the theme is supposed to be sort of a 'marines' thing where you're in an elite corp or something, although it isn't for single player, and doesn't support Bots. What you do is step through a teleporter, and find yourself in a helicopter that has gone directly above the alien ship (your way to get back onboard if you are playing teams or want some advanced alien weaponry). So, the theme here is team play, and it's best to make one team the aliens (I suggest the Barracuda team. Little green men! Either that or the Lunas. They're just plain freaky.) against the humans (any other team).
Most "cheat codes" only work offline, in the regular arenas. To enable them, you need to "bring down the console" by tapping the @ or # keys (set-ups vary), bringing a blue "shutter" down over most of the screen with recent text messages displayed. Backspace once to get rid of that symbol, and then type in god for invulnerability, allammo for 999 shots with all weapons, fly to take to the air, ghost to become insubstantial and float through walls etc, walk to turn either of those last two off, or behindview 1 to get a third-person view of your player. Then enter it, like a chat message, and hit "esc" to clear the shutter away. The "behindview 1" is hardly a gaming advantage, as the behind in question usually obstructs your aim, and it does work online, though being killed cancels it. Now we can add fov 360
and to cancel it fov 90, also working online, fov standing for "field of view", and giving an entirely freaky and useless effect - cool, though. Other numbers as well as 360 do work, so experiment if you like, always remembering that the normal set-up is fov 90! Venture too far into the surrounding darkness using "ghost" and you can easily get lost, while you can't pick up guns or points-lozenges; great for looking for secret passages, however! Fly too high and you die, and some arenas have surprisingly low (invisible) ceilings; the effect can get "buggy", so that you get locked in an "instant death" cycle, from which only the "esc" key can save you. More cheat codes will, hopefully, soon be discovered...
Now, of course, we do see people flying about (well, swimming in mid-air) and doing other strange things online. For this, you do have to be the host of the server, and enter a password in the appropriate place on the "advanced options" page (or its equivalent bit of Nerf.ini), and then use the password to gain control of the server in a way I am sworn to secrecy about - or if the host tells you, as a guest, what the password is, then you can "adminlogin" too. The regular cheat codes work (though entered in a different way), as does summon nerfweapon.ball to make whatever weapon you are holding fire one ballzooka ball, summon
nerfweapon.tripleshot to make a new triple shot appear in front of you (and it will re-spawn there, too), summon nerfweapon.scatter to create a scattershot, and also summon.whomper to create a whomper. No doubt other similar wordings will bring up the other weapons, etc. All this means that, unless you are in an arena from its start, you cannot be sure that your host hasn't got himself 999 ammo plus invincibility, so be alert! He or she cannot do it while you are there without you knowing about it, as a tell-tale caption appears at the top to announce that he or she has logged in as a server administrator. And nobody can "take control" of a server you make unless you (a) make an admin password and (b) tell them what it is!
Being a slightly edited version of SLAM's "readme" for the map: "This takes place immediately after the events of the level TechComb (well, sort of. While there is no single player level, the maps are kind of part of a "story" I'm writing. If you understand, the map makes the story, and the story makes the map. Kinda symbiotic.). However, the setting here is completely different from before. This time the almighty TechComb has been surgically blown out, and is nearly out of power. A combat shuttle finds it still in orbit and prepares to rescue you and the remainder of your team. But...can you make the jump across empty space, push off enough space junk or ride the tractor beam over to your own ship? Try it out!
"Tips: There are two teleporter pads inside the shuttle, marked "2" and "1". These will take you to the shuttle's two turrets, from which you can pound on anything in view. To get out of the turrets, simply walk to the back wall. The Engine Room serves no real purpose to the map, except for some neat firefights. Use the crates and catwalks for cover."
SLAM mentions that the map took over thirty hours to make, and that some surfaces on the asteroids appear, due to a minor bug, to be missing.
August 2000 News Digest
Earlier reports, now deleted as the front page tends to get awfully long, mentioned recently added site pages including the stories "Downtime" and Renegade(DRC-Trooper)'s "Happy Halloween" (those of a nervous disposition are advised to steer well clear), and our "Players" page giving a listing of current Nerf ArenaBlast players, plus I hope some short bios of whoever wants to submit something. The DRC CLAN PAGE has had most of its spelling cleaned up, which is a bit of a shame I think, but some people demanded it - if you haven't dared go there yet, click the button now! The poll for you to vote for your favourite arena is still open on page one; Deck16Remix is currently in a commanding lead. As a cheat code, try FOV 360 or other numbers, with FOV 90 to get you back to normal. If you have trouble joining a Tsunami Mountain server, or people have trouble joining one you run, go into the map file, right-click on the icon, click "rename", and get rid of the space between the two words. The Clan Destiny page now has two further pages leading off from it, but these are only available to clan members, as they are password-protected. If you want to read my playing tips, or general CD news and strategy, I guess you need to join our clan! Or be pretty good at guessing passwords...
Tweety and I realised that the poor Gators team (Wes, Sharon, Vince & Jane) don't have their own arena, so Tweety has been building them one - and I get to write a sequel to "Into the Arena" set there. His site and mine reached 1000 hits at just about the same time. Dodo & Tweety were setting up a team Tourney, but it had to be cancelled. SLAM sent us details on Techcomb, which we put on this new BACKGROUND page, and CD tactician Minibeast began his own page here, MINIBEAST'S ARENA TIPS, which is very well worth checking out!
SLAM's Forest ("a breath of fresh air"), Nerfmaster 2000's Inferno, and Ashbar's
CodexRemix appeared, followed swiftly by Tmon's UndergroundRemix - see reviews on our ARENA REVIEWS II page. And it was on Sunday 27th August that the "adminlogin" cheats made their debut; see our BACKGROUND page, or check out Dodo's site. Tweety released details of the forthcoming OfficeMassacre map - learn about it at his site. And UndergroundRemix got updated from 1.0 to 1.1, so make sure you have the current version. Alfie returned from his vacation, but the question still remains - is he going to update his site, or with school under way, does he just not have the time? We added "Join Mailing List" and "Add to Favorites" facilities to this page - so how about using them, to make sure you keep up with the latest maps and news?
A Message From Tweety...
This is what i am going to do. My site will still be up and running, but my NAB playing itself will be cut very low. Not because of school like everyone else, but because i think this game is really taking big chunks out of our lives. I admit some of it is probably good for us, but i don't want to turn into a lazy computer bum. School doesn't matter. Like, play after school, be smarter and finish your homework early. Personally, NAB just is not the same. None of the "cool" people play any more. Not Duo, not Doc, not \//\por, not Diamondust, and many of you will not know these names - Chelz! Batman and Robin! And Gracie...
But it is the past, and, to me, NAB is partially in the past, and i am taking it to a minimum. But when i do play, i will play for a good amount of time, so i have news for nabing!
To which Custer adds: Well, we can see your point, Tweety, though we will be sorry to see less of you. Spend too much time on Nerf ArenaBlast and life can pass us by. Neglect schoolwork and somebody is liable to take away your online privileges (so don't fall behind on such stuff), but neglect all the other bits of growing up by just sitting at your computer poking buttons, and you could lose a whole lot more, not to mention gain a few too many pounds. Growing up does involve moving on, and I don't mean playing Unreal Tournament instead. The NAB online community is pretty easy to get along in, but there are offline local communities that, if you make the effort to get involved, can offer you a whole lot more, face to face. That said, I don't intend to give up NAB... I must just try to remember that I do have other interests as well...
September 2000 News Digest
September began with Missing stepping down as leader of ONC, and the return of two Gamespy/White Lion servers, though the "Speedblast" one later vanished. Iron Wolf clan began with a bang, with the first of Lucky's excellent remixes, OverLord, on the same day as SLAM's TechComb2. The initial novelty of the "adminlogin" cheats was already starting to fade, though, done in the right spirit, an arena or two played with masses of extra weaponry even managed to persuade SLAM that the triple strike could be fun! NerfKing was much in the news, as he left us (until December 6th) to go on tour, and his quirky LongestYard[TS-HS] remix was spotted on Tmon's site.
Lucky's FacingWorlds and OceanFloor remixes were released, quickly followed by SLAM's sword & sorcery Floating Forts and Missing's BarricadeRemix][, an atmospherically "tweaked" version of the recent release. And of course our impressions of all these maps ended up on our Arena Reviews II page! NerfKing's elder brother made a couple of online appearances, left at home while NK toured, while we received "A Message From Tweety", also on this page. Preacher's
GothicRemixBeta09 appeared, and we were finally able to download Missing's
FrigateRemix2, another subtle reworking of a popular map. And the month was only halfway over...
September 16th was NerfKing's 18th Birthday, and my 19th; on tour, NK had Trunks (alias NerfJack) with him to help him celebrate. Lucky released
PhobosRemix and MazonRemix, or "Mazon Fortress", one of his best yet, while the complex (if brief) life of the Iron Wolves clan took one of its stranger turns when Missing (as he then was) moved straight from their blacklist to a position as General - not that he was able to stay long! The Beta version of SLAM's Nab Commander was released on the 18th/19th, with the instruction to make sure was installed in c:\program files\Atari\Nerf; it was a bit "buggy", though, so the following day the Beta.095 replaced it. Get it from SLAM, and once it has been installed you will find it among your programs, leading off from your start button. Use it, and then send SLAM some feedback, so he can make it better than ever!
Missing's PyramidRemix-BETA came out, but the ceilings are so "buggy" that they blur, vibrate and repeat in a rather headache-inducing way, while Dodo released a small original map called Splashdown, designed for swimming races. Tweety nominated Dodo as "cool person of the week". I (finally) thought to add the maps file to my "Favourites", which makes it a lot simpler to open when I have something to add...
Lucky's PhobosRemix was updated to get rid of the "Hall of Mirrors" effect, and SLAM went off on holiday (vacation) for two weeks, leaving us as the main news source, after moving his site from Geocities to Crosswinds. There was talk of war, though very little actually happened, and then Tmon (and Tux_the_Penguin) issued
PingPong][Remix, with a 1.0 version swiftly followed by a 1.1 improvement. Dodo updated to Splashdown2, with kicker platforms and a buzzer for starting races; Iron Wolf (now Reaper) reported that there was somebody else pretending to be him. Warbird's fun BoxCanyonRemix appeared, and the final version of GothicRemix...
The final version of FrigateRemix was released by Preacher and Ashbar, with a few subtle changes; the Iron Wolves were dissolved (for a while), and Red Storm began to grow (again, for a while...), with Alfie as co-leader and website creator. Missing (now of course Boomslang) and Sean got together to form Official Armed Civilians Clan. Lucky issued Trench and the loads-of-fun HiSpeedRemix, Iron Wolf gave us TrenchBoxRemix, and the IW Clan returned - for a while!
October 2000 News Digest
The Iron Wolves clan changed their name to Seven Man Clan and declared war on Red Storm; Tmon'n'Tux released their Distinctive and Warehouse remixes; Missing, who had by now changed his name to Boomslang (or |3()()|\/|$La|\|G), was recruiting for OACC, or Official Armed Civilian Clan, at Missing61@hotmail.com. The cleverer "adminlogin" aces, like Skippy, were starting to conjure Bots out of thin air, in varying sizes; Skippy celebrated his Birthday on 3rd October, and contributed his poem and bio to our Players page. Lucky released LiandriRemix, while Dodo's
AirBeta had us fighting on top of an airliner in mid-flight. Tux'n'Tmon had almost finished remixing their own version of Liandri; a best-of-both revised version may be on the cards, but it shows that remixers need to communicate, to avoid duplicating work on popular UT maps. Boomslang released his Colosseum "beta", and NerfKing sent an e-mail that he was "planning to kick everyone's ass" when he gets back from tour on December 6th. I got to try out an early version of
BathroomRemix, but the version of its companion BreakfastRemix I encountered was too early a "beta" for me, and gave me an error message of "insufficient mipmaps"! Iron Wolf was the third of Tweety's "Cool Person of the Week", though by now he had changed his name to Reaper.
Reaper made his expansion of Sean's Matrix, MatrixRemix, available, plus his own BreakfastRemix and Lucky's Ariza; he also sent me a copy of RomanArena, though at this stage he didn't make it widely available; Skippy was able to release
Crossfire (the texture-revised version of RealAlmostImport) and Downtown (listed on servers as Concrete Playground). Lucky started a site to offer his own maps for download (we have a link button); Seven Man Clan changed their name to Elite Forces to allow more people in, while Clan DRC started their own site. The anonymous PureNRG map appeared online; SLAM returned from his cruise; and Tweety started a page on his site called "Custer's Section", though not devoted entirely to me! Tmon'n'Tux released Fool's Bravado Remix, after a complex re-texturing job as the original Unreal Tournament textures were copyrighted; Tmon also had begun recruiting for his own clan, TNC, while Boomslang reported that he wouldn't be able to play Nerf or update his site for a month. Tiggy's site, Nerf.UnrealEngine, was discovered, along with his first map, 007 Temple Remix, based on a level from the N64 "Goldeneye" game... and the DRC site started to host the wondrous "dancing monkeys" extravaganza!
FoolsBravadoRemix got updated to a 1.1 version, to allow Bots to move properly in single-player games; Tiggy had begun work on a second "Goldeneye" conversion, Complex (but ran into problems), as well as The Edge: Q2DM1, and we added his site to our link-buttons as NERF.UNREAL ENGINE. Phantom joined Tweety's occasional "cool people of the week" roster. Reaper released the first version of Forts of Independence, and put Roman Arena on general release, while SLAM completed RocketRun1, and also had Inferno2 from AceMaster2000 on his site. Tweety was working on his maps again, while Boomslang was working to correct the "one-way corridor" glitch in Colloseum. SLAM released RocketRun2; Scouse's NABwarzone site got its link, as did Zechs' Nerf Page, with the
Countryside/Country Living map project that Zechs started, but which seems not to have worked out. Sharpknux was seen testing his map Battle Spheres, and mentioned he was also working on an arena called Armageddon.
Monday 16th October, 2000:
SLAM has done it again - with RocketRun2 now available from the download section of his site - link-button to the left! It is all Triple strikes & hypershots on narrow metal walkways in deep space, and I was set to dislike it a lot - until I found the strange 3-D area at the very top of the shaft, which is a very different type of battleground! Check it out.
Tuesday 17th October, 2000:
Reaper has mentioned working on a new map, called CountrySide. This may or may not tie in with a project announced on new website Zechs' Nerf Page (see our Links page for, um, our link), which aims to combine the talents of our best mapmakers to produce the ambitious Neighbourhood and Country Living - go to Zechs' for details.
NABwarzone is a good-looking new site from Scouse, which we have also linked to; it all looks very slick, and you can even get a free e-mail account, which can't be bad!
The DRC Clan website continues to grow; the old "Clanbake" page we have hosted here has been re-done there, though the Guest Book will not be transferred, but start again from scratch. Due to advances in Homestead technology, the captions for the art and photos now appear only when you run your cursor over them! And do check out all their pages, especially Troy's "Monkey" extravaganza...
Thursday 19th October, 2000:
Sharpknux has been working on a map, Battle Spheres; you may have seen him running a test server. He should be releasing it to SLAM soon, so watch for it to appear. His next map, he says, will be Armageddon. Lucky has been using his NerfEd, but hasn't actually come up with something worth developing into a full map recently. So, things are a bit slow...
Zechs confirms that Reaper is among those involved in his deluxe mapmaking project. And a few new Nerf websites are also starting up; watch for new link-buttons on our Links page soon!
Friday 20th October, 2000:
Reaper announces that he is working to finish his map pack, which will include the revised Forts of Independence 1.1, plus WindyRemix and Country Living. After that, "Remember the Alamo", he says! 'The artist previously known as Slam' has updated his site, increasing his downloads section from 49 to 61 maps; his own city-arena, originally designed to be Techcomb 3, is no doubt near completion, as soon as he finishes going through the Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force demo. Use the wall ladders, man!
Tiggy is working on not maps but mutators - the one he has got to "beta" changes all weapons and ammo in any chosen arena to triple strikes and rocket-packs, which sounds like fun. He is working to make things easier to set up, so it all sounds promising.
Saturday 21st October, 2000:
Skippy reports that he won't be able to play NAB for 2-4 weeks, "because I technically fried my KMD62 300 processor...and now am stuck with our old P1 166..." So until his Dad's KMD62 500 arrives, he has a social life, but he does want to be e-mailed at firstname.lastname@example.org, and has also begun his own website, which includes a section where he asks for ideas for making custom websites. Check our links page! And Justin has also just begun his website, including NAB stuff, so he gets added, too.
Reaper has revised BreakfastRemix, so delete your old copy (unless it carries a 14th October date, 11:53) and download it again from the IW Clan website. Forts of Independence has now been added to for a 1.1 version, so grab that as well (though keep the original), and also Reaper's latest remix from Unreal, WindyRemix! Reaper now has 66 maps available for download, and the "cool buttons" are back... Sadly, Country Living would not work properly, so is not being proceeded with.
Tmon & Tux_the_Penguin's hard work on all those textures for Fool's Bravado Remix has been recognised by mentions on a couple of top UT sites...one of which spells Nerf "Nurf", but some nice screenshots...
Sunday 22nd October, 2000:
Reaper has Lucky's latest remix on his (IW Clan) site: Peak Remix. He has also improved Forts of Independence 1.1, so delete your old version (of 1.1 - keep the original release!), and download the new version, and you will no longer re-spawn in the deadly acid-filled moat! That has to be worth celebrating!
Scouse has got details of the new NAB webring on his site, so if you have a Nab-related website, go there and sign up, okay?
Monday 23rd October, 2000:
Preacher has sent me a copy of his latest map, Leadworks Remix, which looks to be an arena well worth investigating. I am not sure if it is on a download site yet, but no doubt Reaper and SLAM will both have it soon. It may look like the usual volcanic lava to avoid falling in, but I guess this time it is molten lead! And I noticed that Sharpknux was online in his own server, testing out a little something called
The Void, so that is something else to keep a watch for.
Reaper is working on a bold new site to replace the old IW Clan one, and take over the downloads responsibility. I gather that the new site will offer us some screenshots of the various arenas, which should be good.
We seem to be having some "mechanical" problems with our Homestead server, leading to repeated "refreshing" and overlapping elements. Given the nature of the interface, this is difficult to combat, but we have stripped this page's content down, so let's see if that helps...
Tuesday 24th October, 2000:
Well, cutting the length of this page seems to have stopped the "multiple refreshing" problem; but let me know if it happens again, or if anything strange seems to be going on. Homestead is a very user-friendly place to put together a website, you don't have to know html, just know which element to click next - but it means you can't really get "under the hood" if anything goes wrong.
Leadworks Remix is now "bubbling under" at Reaper's site, which is still at the IW Clan address for a few more days. SLAM meanwhile has unveiled his new website associate, SMASH - any rumour that The Man is going to change his name to GRAB is...well, started here, I guess... The two met on the cruise SLAM went on; SMASH hasn't bought himself a copy of Nerf ArenaBlast yet, but is looking out for one! SLAM reports that Tiggy's Rocket Arena Mutator "beta" works well; it looks as if the forthcoming finished version of NAB Commander will include a handy button to make the use of such things pretty simple (see last Friday's item).
The new site-in-preparation from Reaper will concentrate on downloads, plus screenshots and arena reviews. In fact, the idea is for the site to use the reviews from our ARENA REVIEWS pages, which is fine by me. And Scouse's webring is starting to recruit, so if you have a NAB website, now is the time to get on board.
Wednesday 25th October, 2000:
Reaper's "IW Clan" site is dead - long live NerfArenaBlast.com, his new site concentrating on downloads. The button is on this page, and our Links page. We have also got the "webring" banner at the bottom of both pages, after a brisk struggle with the HTML involved!
Meanwhile, SLAM is working on a "single-player mission" scenario for NAB; the details on his site sound intriguing. He has also released the long-awaited "full version" of NAB Commander, so delete your "beta" version and install the finished article!
More NAB websites are coming along; Agent007's looks good, but he has asked me not to link with it until it is fully ready for visitors! And I have heard from FeEdiKo that he won't be playing NAB until next month now - his monthly allocation of hours online is running too low...
Thursday 26th October, 2000:
Reaper announces his retirement: well, not a complete break with NAB, but a temporary cutback. He hurt his neck yesterday morning, and at the emergency room was told it was a severe neck spasm, which "locks" the muscle. So, the amount of time sitting at a computer has to be cut most drastically! As Reaper has been one of the main "movers and shakers" of our community, a long lay-off would affect us all. Get well soon, Reaper!
The Great Nerf War is the title for the single-player mission-based scenario that SLAM is working on; he has a couple of screenshots on his site, so check them out, they look very promising!
Friday 27th October, 2000:
Lucky has issued a revised version of his "speeding train" arena, HiSpeedRemix V11, with a bounce-pad to make it possible to get onto the train roof without cheating! This is going to cause confusion in the short run, as he hasn't changed the name of the map file itself, so that you can only have one of the versions in your file, and when trying to join a server you won't know which version it is running! I have renamed the old version in my file PM-HiSpeedRemixV1.0, just so that I can keep it; you may like to do that too, but otherwise just delete it to make room for the improved map. The link to "Lucky's Downloads" on our links page is the best place to go for the newest version.
A useful new site, MI6, has been added to our Links Page; it is being put together by Agent007, and covers "Need for Speed" as well. He has downloads of most of the best maps, and, most importantly, his tips on "tweaking" and doing clever NAB stuff are written clearly and make a lot more sense than most people's tips, which tend to only make sense if you already know the answer!
Reaper was online yesterday afternoon, and says he is feeling a lot better. He was certainly playing well...
Saturday 28th October, 2000:
Reaper has got Battle Spheres by Sharpknux on his downloads page now, and a very strange arena it looks too - I must play it properly before I try to review it, though it is certainly a fun place to visit. If you found you downloaded an empty zip file, try again, as the problem has been sorted out now. Remember, get your
HiSpeedRemix updated - I was testing out the new bounce-pad, and a number of people tried to join the server but couldn't, as they hadn't got the new version of the map...
Sunday 29th October, 2000:
Well Dodo has got a new map called Static on his site, which seems a bit conventional by Dodo's standards, but I haven't investigated it fully yet. Skippy has
StarCommand on his site, though on server lists it shows up as Star Control - a whole lot of fun, zooming around in zero gravity! And Tmon and Tux_the_Penguin have got EmpoweredRemix on their site, with two texture files to add to your textures directory, and it seems very playable and beautifully rendered.
Trouble accessing Crosswinds servers today - in case it stayed bad, for a while we provided a direct link to Dodo's map.
Monday 30th October, 2000:
Mr BoBBo's map BigBo is now available from his site - do I have to tell you that we have a link-button on our Links Page? As I had problems getting hold of the map before today, I put another temporary link-button to take you direct to his zip file, but that is gone now. It looks a good map, a bit like Deck 16 with decent carpets!
Do I need to remind you that Halloween is almost here? Time to switch the lights out, ignore the doorbell, and eat all that candy bought for trick-or-treaters! Either that or read Renegade's thrilling Halloween story...
SLAM has released some new shots of "skins" from The Great Nerf War, which he still working on; Reaper reports he has nearly finished his Alamo map, so it may be worth checking his site for it by now...
Tuesday 31st October, 2000:
Reaper has his new map available for download: The Alamo, so zoom on over to his site. FeEdiKo is working on Deck 17 Remix, which he hopes to finish in a day or two. And a fourth page of ARENA REVIEWS has now begun here! Have a happy Halloween, and see you tomorrow...
Wednesday 1st November, 2000:
Well, Empowered Remix has gone to a new, improved 1.1 version; after some suggestions from Tiggy, Tux'n'Tmon have made the lighting flare more, and the bounce-pads now "boing" nicely! If you downloaded from Tmon's site before 10:15pm CST yesterday, delete your old map (or retitle it adding OLD to the end) and go get the new version. If in doubt, check if the ReadMe says it is version 1.1.
Nali Temple Remix is their next project.
If you like Deck 16 Remix, you will love Deck 17 Remix, a beautiful piece of work by FeEdiKo - available from the DRC clan website (the Troy page, at the bottom); the Homestead download system is not the best in the world, but so far it seems to be working. And only this morning Fee has added Oblivion Remix, which is a little like Hyperblast only a whole lot cooler! That too can be downloaded from the DRC clan website.
How did Halloween go? I was wearing an (online) "Troy of the Barracudas" costume just to confuse people, while reports are coming in of somebody using a slingshot and hardboiled eggs to keep trick or treaters away, while he ate all the candy. That was in Skippy's neighbourhood!
This just in: "Namezero is under maintenance, that's why Scouse's and my sites are currently down", Reaper reports. "My address at the moment is http://welcome.to/nab." This worked for me - though I only got the first eight maps as available for download. I have changed the NerfArenaBlast.com link-button on this page to the new address, at least temporarily.
Thursday 2nd November, 2000:
FeEdiKo has released another remix, LavaGiantRemix, which you can find on the Troy page of the DRC site. Or there is another place to get all our maps besides SLAM, Reaper and the other regular sites; Policer_O, as well as his excellent server, has an idrive account. Go to www.idrive.com, type Policer_O in the "visitors" box, click to go there, then choose and click the "NerfAB" option - and a full list of maps to download presents itself...
LavaGiantRemix suffers badly from "clipping" in the stone castle; in the courtyard, the floor strobes and vanishes, to show the lava beneath! But check it out anyway, is a great arena.
Policer_O will be making some changes to the line-up of maps his server cycles through; if you have any suggestions (and we are limited to 32 maps in the cycle), I will gladly pass them on.
Friday 3rd November, 2000:
With any luck, the POLICER_O'S FILES link-button to the left will take you straight to his i-drive account, as a visitor; to reach the maps available for download, just select NerfAB. Then just click on the map of your choice, I guess; there is certainly a very wide choice! The page does take a while to download, so be patient.
Reaper is trying to arrange an online get-together of as many of the long-time NAB players as he can, probably at the weekend (not this weekend, I think), maybe at noon or 2pm, US time. If he hasn't contacted you, you can contact him, via his site.
No new maps sighted, but Reaper does have SLAM's NabCommander 1.1, and also SkinEd, which should allow you to design your own "skins" for characters. Not that you can use them for your own character online yet, but presumably the day will come!
Sunday 5th November, 2000:
Bonfire Night. FeEdiKo has released (on the DRC site again) a revised
LavaGiantRemix2 (or 1.1 on the server list), with a lot less clipping. And Reaper has released a revised and improved version of The Alamo. He and Skippy are working on a map called Stonehenge, from a suggestion I made - well, all I said was "What about Stonehenge" as a theme for a map, since I am reading a novel about it at the moment! It sounds as if they are going to make something rather wild...
This page holds our old news reports, and other "Background" pieces. The newest items are at the bottom!
Monday 6th November, 2000:
Reaper reports that he is going it alone on Stonehenge. He has already done enough work on it to be to send me a partial map, but I have been so busy downloading new maps from his site I haven't had time to look at it yet. Crusher is by the fabled Captain Mellow, and has five places where the ceiling can crush you;
Forgotten Warriors by Scouse is also on his own site, with some background information; and Ender's Game is a 3-D battleground in space, without having to hold your breath, by WaCkA. And both Thunderbird and Policer_O have maps almost ready to be published - expect TB's Fetid Sewers tomorrow - and no jokes about "It stinks" please, because I have seen a preliminary version and it looks very good.
I have started an ARCHIVES I page, and managed to transfer some of the older updates from this page, as well as the contents of what was the
BACKGROUND page. Maybe this page will load a little faster now?
Tuesday 7th November, 2000:
Thunderbird's excellent new arena for us, FetidRemix (or "Fetid Sewers" on the server list) is due for release today, so see if Reaper or Policer_O have it yet. We are tiny again, as in BathroomRemix; the pipes below the WC have been thoroughly cleaned, making it actually an inviting place to scurry around!
Tmon & Tux_the_Penguin have released their Nali Temple Remix; it is already in the usual revised 1.1 form, so Tiggy must have got his advice in quickly! If you got it before 10:45pm CST yesterday, you need to upgrade your copy. Another new textures file; the name, "Quake3a" gives a clue about the effect they are going for! The textures file is bigger than the map file, actually... The next remix they plan is called Ride the Dragon, which seems intriguing.
Talking of texture files, Captain Mellow's Crusher needs one, and until somebody supplies it, we can't play that arena! It doesn't seem to be on his site...
Reaper's Stonehenge looks good, from the work-in-progress preview he sent me; rather "City on the Edge of Forever", leaping through the matter transmitter made me feel just like Dr McCoy!
Hey, I am told the man from the telephone company will be along on Friday to install ADSL; assuming it works, no longer will my servers go all laggy if a third person joins! And I'll join the ranks of the LPBs! That is "Low Ping Blasters", to use the polite version...
Wednesday 8th November, 2000:
Well, hopefully Thunderbird will release Fetid Remix today. Scouse is hard
at work on a "skin pack", which, if we all download it, will mean we will have a wider choice of players to play as online. But check his site for details. If you have a design for a "skin", a way a player could look in the game, why not contact him - or Skippy is interested in making "custom skins" as well. Just bear in mind that, if the "skin" goes into a "skin pack" that we all have, anybody will be able to choose to play as that character, just as we can all choose to play as Rabbit, or Todd, or whoever. I think!
Policer_O is working on Pressure Remix, and is hoping to have it done by Friday, despite some setbacks. It has a rather cool way to blow away your opponent - rather less bloody than the Unreal Tournament version, luckily! And the textures look good, from an early version he showed me.
Remember, Reaper's grand reunion for long-time NAB players is due on Saturday at 8:00pm GMT, or 2:00pm EST, or noon CST I guess. It will be on Policer_O's server, which will have extra bandwidth for the occasion! I intend to be there, and I hope to see a lot of people that I don't meet often enough these days!
Thursday 9th November, 2000:
If you have had problems with the new map file entitled LavaRun2.0, open up your map file again, right-click on the map's name, choose "rename", and change the title to PM-LavaRun2 - now it should work! This is a new version of LavaRun, now with lots of nice hot bubby lava to fall in... Oh, full credit to Reaper for working out that the ".0" had to go! I worked out that a "PM-" was needed, as without that prefix a map won't appear on one's drop-down list when one wants to create a server.
Friday 10th November, 2000:
Policer_O's Pressure Remix will appear in two versions, one with "Unreal Tournament" type textures, one more Nerfish! Check his i-drive files to see if they are out yet; the "UT" version is due this afternoon (CST), the more colourful one either this evening or tomorrow.
He also tells me that the "Reunion Hall" server tomorrow will start a couple of hours early, at noon CST (6:00pm GMT), for anyone who likes to turn up early at parties. The server will cycle through maps in the usual way, but Reaper has asked for 40 minutes per arena.
And my ADSL connection seems to be working, my ping on the server I have tried was just about half what it used to be. That's a lot of cash for a fifth of a second, but hopefully worth it, particularly if it means I can host a server myself for more than three people now. I must experiment!
The real NerfKing has returned from his tour, a month early; it seems that an imitation NK has also been online, but the man himself is back. For some reason he had hideously high ping yesterday, though...
Saturday 11th November, 2000:
Reunion Day - 2:00pm CST, 3:00pm EST, 8:00GMT, 10:00pm in Finland I guess! Reaper's grand old-timers' reunion, so don't be late!
Pressure Remix is out in its "grimly realistic textures" version, check Policer_O's i-drive for it, and to see if the other texturing is out yet. Mr BoBBo's reworking of LavaRun has been updated to LavaRun2-1, which gets away from the renaming thing we mentioned on Thursday. Scouse's Forgotten Warriors (Final) is out and looks very good; it is on his site of course, and Reaper's. Scouse also mentions that he has copies of maps called PM-one2one and PM-MessedUp; he hopes to offer them for download if he can work out where he got them from!
Dodo has posted screenshots on his site of a new map he is working on, entitled 742 Evergreen Terrace; it looks interesting so far.
There was a server running yesterday called "CUSTER COME HERE!" - though each time I checked, it was full, so I never did get the chance to join it! Still, it is nice to feel wanted. Reaper is happy to announce that he managed to top 100,000 points in a 40-minute session on the Forest map there, which looks like a record. Of course, being the host, with zero ping, must help. See the screenshots that prove Reaper's achievement on his site... though if we are going to have a "record scores" section, I think that it ought to be based on a rather shorter time, or we are going to wear out our shooting fingers, and all get muscle spasms in our backs..
.Reaper not only has almost every map available for download, he has ratings for them (marks out of ten, though nothing above 9.0 has been sighted), and screen shots, and reviews, though he hasn't added them all yet. My reviews, by special arrangement, as seen here on the ARENA REVIEWS pages. Just click the rating number!
And Boomslang tells me he has got a new Nerf chat room up and running - the link is on this page, so why not give it a try. If you have a microphone, it looks as if it will allow speech as well as typed comments!
Sunday 12th November, 2000:
Tiggy has got Crusher by Captain Mellow available on his site, The Blast Zone (or Nerf.UnrealEngine, as our link-buttons call it), complete with the necessary textures file. Not a large map, but I played it for a while this morning with FeniX, the DRC clan newbie, and it was fun! There is a slight flaw, however...
The morning after: well, I guess Reaper's Reunion Hall was a great success, there were certainly a lot of people online, including SLAM; the special server had strange problems, though, so we all ended up on a number of smaller ones. We must do it again some time, and keep our fingers crossed that the main server doesn't go weird on us then. It had been fine earlier, but, with computers, these things do happen!
Monday 13th November, 2000:
A long update on the SLAM website today; not too keen on me using a smaller typeface for his all-capitals name, so I hope that is better. Too much for me to repeat here, so give the Maestro a visit, eh?
Tiggy, expert in all things technical, suggests we upgrade to Direct X8.0, and provides an appropriate link on his site (Nerf.UnrealEngine) to download it from. Get updated drivers for your graphics card too while you're about it; I noticed Nvidia have something called Detonator 3 free to download if you use one of their cards.
No sign of the Nerfishly-textured PressureRemix2 yet on Policer_O's i-drive; FeEdiKo was about to send me a preliminary version of his fourth remix last night when my computer froze, sigh...
Justin's site is growing very nicely; I recommend frequent visits, though have a magazine to read (or a broadband connection) if you want to admire his screenshots, as they are in "bmp" rather than "jpg" format, and download rather slowly. See a picture of me (well, of Todd of the Tycoons) - if my score there is low, it is because I had only just joined that arena!
Tuesday 14th November, 2000:
Well, FeEdiKo sent me a copy of his unfinished AureecomRemix, "Stage of Glory"; he doesn't know when he will have the time to do the rest of the textures and add weapons etc, though. It looks like a large double-ended theatre or rock venue; with bare concrete floors, some banners and wallpaper up, and large crates scattered around, it is as if the construction crew have just gone out for lunch. One end's banners are for the Lunas, the other end's for the Tycoons...and in the middle is a big pit to fall in, where one gets "depressurized"! I can't help feeling that the crates contain carpets, wallpaper, ammo, weapons, and our favourite power-ups, and that once they are unpacked, the arena will be open for business.
The idea of another "Reunion Hall" sounds good, with any luck the main server will behave itself - but in the meantime, how about making a point of being online at 2:00pm CST, 8:00pm GMT, on a Saturday, if you want to meet up with as many fellow players as possible?
Wednesday 15th November, 2000:
Mr.BoBBo has published a new map he's made on his website: Project Moon. It has a couple of tricks and surprises I won't reveal here, as it was fun to find them out! I would guess it will be 8.0 or 8.5 on Reaper's Ratings, so take the link from our Links page, okay?
Boomslang now has a new e-mail: BoomSlang_dude@hotmail.com. He is also talking seriously about updating his site. FeEdiKo is working on some sound and texture improvements to his very popular Deck 17 Remix (at least until he can get a copy of Return to Monkey Island). And Reaper has done more work on his
Stonehenge map-in-progress. Votes for his "Hall of Fame" are coming in nicely, though there is talk of a manual recount in some States, while he is having problems with trying to get a new map from Sharpknux.
SLAM has another large update, and backs Tiggy's recommendation of
DirectX8.0. I just hope that the fact that my machine has "frozen" twice recently when I tried to leave NAB is just an unhappy coincidence! He mentions the possibility of another "Reunion" this coming Saturday; all I was saying was that any Saturday, at the same time of day, would be a good time for people who want to meet other NAB players, and play in as large a game as possible, to be online. If anybody else thinks another day of the week or time would be better, let us know.
An e-mail of General Interest, Cut & Pasted in for you!
From: Policer_O To: Reaper2087@hotmail.com; CusterCD01@hotmail.com
Subject: My server, Good and Bad News
Sorry about My server acting up over the past couple of weeks......it is not a problem with the server machine or software, but a problem with our Internet Service Provider, Resolution time is unknown. I have no control over the ISP, but I do over the Server. I have, continually and meticulously, cared for OUR Nerf server, by taking it down everyday to ScanDisk and Defrag the HD, then reboot, so it will give optimum performance.
I was told by our Computer Department Head that we will be getting rid of the 10 Mb internet connection that gives me just under 1 Mb(almost a T1 level) of through-put to the Server, and we will be getting a new ISP that will give me 3~4 Mb(almost ~ more than a T3) of through-put to the Server! This will most likely be the lowest pinging and least lagging server for Nerf, once the changes are made. To continue the good news, as I have told some of you before, the server is not a slouch for a PC. The Server is an Intel P3 @ 600Mhz, 128 MB Ram, and a 6.4 GB HD. Well the good news is that, it will soon have more Ram and a Larger Hard Drive!
Thursday 16th November, 2000:
It looks as if a new map from Black Dragon is out there somewhere, but Thunderbird and Reaper are both a little evasive as to what it is. Your fearless reporter will continue to investigate...he has at least found out its name now, which is Dome Remix Beta...
Policer_O tells us that his server's recent problems have come from the ISP, despite all his best efforts (I have posted the full e-mail on the Archives I page - remember that there, the newest stuff is at the bottom). The good news is that he will soon be upgrading, so in a couple of weeks we will be amazed at how good the ping is.
Following a veiled threat to send a plane-load of lawyers down to supervise the count, Reaper has declared his first Hall of Fame winner: me! Thank you, that is greatly appreciated. And now hurry back to vote on next month's contest, because it's a bit lonely in there! Somebody who writes his name in all-capitals would make good company...
Friday 17th November, 2000:
Reaper is doing his best to confuse me; he issues a new update, and two new maps, then when I return to his site later it has gone back to its Wednesday state! For the record, he did have ArcaneTempleRemix by Sharpknux, and BlackDragon's first map - though neither of the downloads actually worked for me, with Winzip rejecting the first, and the second turning up as only a text file, sigh...
Skippy has almost finished his skin pack, so if you suffer from spots ... what? Not that sort of skin pack? Oh. And he has a new address for his website...
bite.to/Skippy apparently. And we can all call him "Hobbes", after a certain well-known stuffed toy tiger I guess...
Justin has discovered the delights of playing Hide & Seek on NAB; I always find Championship Arena good for that, or Orbitspire!
Saturday 18th November, 2000:
The "peak time" non-Reunion was splendidly busy; nothing like a full 12- person server for full enjoyment. Duo and NerfKing seemed in good form. No word from Reaper yet about those maps; oh, and FeEdiKo got through "Return to Monkey Island" in 12 hours, which he reckons makes it rather expensive entertainment...
Sunday 19th November, 2000:
A bit of surgery to cut this page down to a more reasonable length; the news updates deleted are all on Archives I though, if you want to refer back. We have also updated our Reaper's link on this page, as he seems to have abandoned the old address it led to; the link on our Links page remains okay. If you have been using his "welcome.to/nab", delete it! There seem to be problems with some of Reaper's new maps, but we have managed to get Galen's BattleField safely now. If you are having problems downloading from him, let Reaper know; he is thinking of changing from nbci, after all this hassle! A new map from Thunderbird,
GrinderRemix, should be out soon, he has sent it to Policer_O and SLAM; a nice big place we can all run around getting lost in until we work out how it fits together! Boomslang mentions that he has sent his new daMAZE to Reaper, so let us hope for updates before the end of the weekend.
The FAQs page here has been given a slight revision; it does answer a lot of the questions I hear being asked online, though your computer set-up may vary.
Other new maps appear to be on the way, but I seem to be having a little trouble with e-mails at the moment, so don't know as much as I ought to! B-Ball tells me he has made four, though they aren't released yet: TrainingArena,
TrainingArena2, ElsinoreRemix, and FithRemix - at least that is the spelling I get. Elsinore was the castle where Hamlet used to live, as far as I can remember!
Yesterday's non-Reunion was enlivened by a dispute about the points-lozenges a player leaves behind when blown away - are the points up for anyone to grab, or do they "belong" to the player who did the shooting? I think it is more practical, and fun, if anybody can make a dash for them, which is the view that Mac and Thunderbird were taking; Reaper, however, disagreed. Strongly!
Monday 20th November, 2000:
Well, MessedUp and One2One turn out to have been around for a while, in Mr.BoBBo's second map pack; both nice arenas. Despite Reaper's maps list only going from A to L, we managed to download Sharpknux's new RainForest - only for WinZip to say that it was "not a valid archive" and refuse to unzip it, which it also continues to say for ArcaneTempleRemix.
NerfKing was saying his farewells online yesterday, as he is about to "move on" and wipe NAB from his hard drive. We will miss the big fella! Of course, it could have been an impostor, but it 'sounded' like him...
Reaper was up all night, Saturday, well into Sunday morning - or by GMT, six hours ahead, until 2:30 in the afternoon or so. No wonder he was starting to feel tired!
Scouse mentions that Sammi is working on MeowMix, set inside a giant model cat, while his work-in-progress is WaxWorks, which sounds as if it ought to have a lot of "skins" standing about on display.
For frequent updates, interesting reading, and weird bouncing animals, remember to visit Justin's site - in fact, I'd better give him a front-page link here, replacing somebody who hasn't updated for five weeks. It seems only fair...
Tuesday 21st November, 2000:
ArcaneTempleRemix is now working fine, so download Sharpknux's first remix from Reaper and this time it will unzip! A nice-looking arena, it deserves to be popular. With any luck, all Reaper's map downloads are working, except for
RainForest; the small but intriguing DomeRemix, by Black Dragon, came through okay, as well.
Over a week since SLAM's last update, and his map downloads seem a little behind the times, too. Let's hope he is busy on The Great Nab War and other mouth-watering projects...
Our Links page now points you to the Dragon Clan website; Dragon (DR) Leader isn't actually able to play for two weeks or so, but the clan is recruiting, so drop by and take a look.
Wednesday 22nd November, 2000:
A big update from SLAM to report on, and he has a new map for us to go and download: Philistine Temple by Acemaster2000. Just to confuse us, it comes up just as PM-Temple; also, at least when I unzipped it, I got a "program file", but just double-click it three or four times and you do get to the familiar map-icon and ReadMe, for the usual cut-and-paste job.
SLAM also has NABCommander 1.2 finished; there is one minor "may crash" problem, so, while a way to avoid that fate is suggested, you may prefer to wait a few days for version 1.25! Work continues on The Great Nerf War, but it is so complex and multi-path that SLAM is asking if anybody would like to come in and share the work; he got rather side-tracked into a lot of work on a skin for the Luna general. And "skin" is the word, I gather, as the young lady shows rather a lot of it. E-mail SLAM if you want to see what he ended up with! Oh, SLAM also did rather well in three games recently, and has screen-shots to prove it...beating Spike, even! And he reports that Duo has formed a clan called Screamin' Demons.
Reaper has now got MessedUp, One2One, DaMAZE, and Grinder on his downloads page. Our reviews of them are now on the Arena Reviews IV page...and more to come, of course...
Such as B-Ball's TrainingArena, which sounds like fun (and he does confirm that "FithRemix" is the correct spelling for his soon-to-be-released map), and, from TracerX, TrueRun(beta)... Exploring any map for the first time is fun, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they've got.
I have updated the PLAYERS listings as much as I could, helped by being able to check my lists against Justin's; please, if I have left out any current players, such as you yourself, do send an e-mail! Of course, some of those listed are probably secondary names for people we know better under, um, a better-known name, and some of those listed gave up playing Nerf ArenaBlast last April and have forgotten all about us, but there are still a good number of players on the rolls!
Thanksgiving is nearly upon us, the time of year when people outside the USA find surfing so much quicker because all the Americans are busy eating turkey and pumpkin pie. Have a good one, anyway, and see you back online soon!
Thursday 23rd November, 2000:
Have a good Thanksgiving, over there! Reaper has a new map (from an idea by Black Dragon), DaBounce, for us to unwrap today; Boomslang says he has sent in a new improved version of Deck16Remix, so look for that soon. Don't expect Boomslang online for a couple of weeks, though, as he checked a wrong box or two, and is slightly uninstalled at the moment! Justin is away for a mere 3 days (he reports that the Screamin' Demons clan is actually led by West Syiedder, not Duo), but Scouse is taking a break until the new year, for schoolwork, a social life, stuff like that! He pledges to do the "skin" work he had arranged to, however, and the
Waxworks map. See you in a month or so, big guy! Add Skippy being in exile except Friday and Saturday nights at the moment, and our ranks are slightly thinned...
Lots of additions to our ARENA REVIEWS IV page, including TracerX's
UltraReal and TrueRun(beta), the first arena to come with its own resident pair of Bots, Sam and Frazier. Hmm, sounds as if TracerX is a "Cheers" fan!
Friday 24th November, 2000:
My ultra-fast, broadband ADSL connection had an off-day yesterday, and whatever it was that was wrong hurt the old-style connection too, but I finally managed to upload this page, though it took a good half hour! Thankfully, today we seem to be back to normal. Yesterday morning I played Forest in Justin's server before he set off for his Thanksgiving trip, and had a ping of 650; by the end of the day my ping in any server was into four figures. If Justin is going to beat Reaper's record there, he needs to score over 8000 points per minute, and for that he will need more than one person to play against...
SLAM has made a small update, and Tiggy has released some skins to go with NABCommander's capabilities. Sharpknux (on Reaper's site) has a plug for the Clan Tournament - and your chance to vote on which arena should be used for it. He also promises that his RainForest will soon be a valid, unzippable download, which has to be good news.
Saturday 25th November, 2000:
I am very shocked and sad this morning; Reaper has e-mailed us to say he is leaving NAB; he will make one last server at 2:00pm CST (8:00pm GMT, etc), I assume today (but he might mean Sunday...it depends when he actually typed "tomorrow"), to say goodbye. He leaves Sharpknux to take over his website.
SLAM says he may abandon The Great Nerf War unless he gets some people volunteering to help on what is a massive project; he has plans for some interesting regular maps, however, mainly "deathmatch" types.
Sunday 26th November, 2000:
Well, Reaper has left us. He turned up late for his farewell yesterday, as he has overslept, but after the usual discussion over who was going to make what server, a good number of us went to Forest, and tearful goodbyes were said, with much "Good luck!" and "I love you, Man!" Reaper took a 'photo' or so of us all, and FeEdiKo provided the fireworks with a massive display of whomper-bursts. We may not entirely understand why our friend cannot be with us any longer, but we wish him all the best; and he might put in an appearance at the upcoming Tourney...
So, Sharpknux is joined by Rainmaker to keep the website going, and I guess Elite Force continues. I can't say I felt much like playing later in the day, afterwards, but we must go on.
TrainingArena2 and DeathFanRemix are on B-Ball's site, but as yet they won't download for me. Mr.BoBBo has been busy, too, but he is starting to wonder whether we like his maps, as he doesn't see them played, and is tempted to give up. Which would be a pity; I like Mr.BoBBo's maps, I think Project Moon is excellent,
BigBO and LavaRun 2 are also nice maps to play, and his others are above average too. The trouble is, for any mapmaker, they spend hours doing the work, but there are more maps than regular players, so the chance of them actually seeing their map played are pretty slim, particularly as the Gamespy server only plays the old maps, and tends to have the best ping. Still, Policer_O's server should be upgraded soon, so make sure you do have the new maps, and make sure you play them when you can. Show our mapmakers we do appreciate all the work they do!
Monday 27th November, 2000:
Previous attempts at a NAB Tournament never worked - and now a message from Lucky. "Rainmaker has abandoned his clan tournament and formed a new 1 on 1 tournament with me. The tournament site is where my downloads page used to be. I encourage everyone to check out the site and sign up." We have changed our links-button, and highlighted it, so go along and take a look! And sign up, too...
News from Tweety that he is not only still alive, he is helping SLAM on the storyline for The Great Nerf War!
Reaper was working on adding our arena reviews, individually, to his map downloads page, adding a screenshot and a rating. I hope that Sharpknux & Rainmaker will continue the project, but since I do have the list of ratings, I thought it would be a nice idea to add them to my reviews, so look for RR: 8.0 or whatever, alongside the map title on the Arena Review pages. "RR" for "Reaper Rating", in his memory!
Tuesday 28th November, 2000:
On the www.NerfArenaBlast.com site, RainForest is now downloadable and unzippable, from Sharpknux; Sharpknux's TheVoid comes through, too, but
Reaper'sTrainingArena doesn't seem to be working yet. Still, RainForest looks like fun, a variation on Forest with lots of thick-trunked trees to hide behind! And
TheVoid is, well, different!
I gave myself a scare; since my NAB game has been a bit unstable, I took up the "reinstall" option, and when I clicked to play afterwards, just got a black screen. (G)Ranger(s) advised me to "reinstall" again, and now it seems to be working properly once more. Whether it will be more stable than before, of course, only time will tell. I have kept my offline "mega nerf" score, I see, though the first time I began in the Amateur lobby instead of the Championship one!
A friend sent me a copy of his unfinished map a week or two ago, and then yesterday, while trying to finish it, had a minor disaster and lost the whole thing, so that he would have to start from scratch - except that I was able to send him back his own unfinished version! So for a reliable way of saving a map-in-progress, send a copy to a friend or two...
Wednesday 29th November, 2000:
Interesting news on Tiggy's site, "The Blast Zone" (or Nerf.UnrealEngine): after his work on Mutators, he has been contacted by Nick Parde, who developed the original
Orbital and Moonlight arenas. He is trying to put together a "Capture the Flag" type of game for NAB. A team is being assembled to work on this, so if you have the skills needed, or suggestions for what you think would work well in Nerf ArenaBlast, e-mail Tiggy, and he will pass messages on. Nothing is for certain yet, but adding "CTF" to NAB would be a huge boost for the game!
AsSAsiNatOR has been in touch, to tell me about his new website; the link-button is even now on our Links Page. Screenshots, news of projects he is working on - and his first three maps are available for download. Since these are Homestead downloads we are talking about, try and choose an off-peak time, but they do work! The Office is inspired by The Matrix and Perfect Dark; The Very End of You is based on the Quake III level of the same name, but built from scratch for NAB with suitable changes (it works okay in multi-player, but tends to give the old "General Protection Fault" warning in single-player mode, apparently!); and 007 Basement Remix is also built from scratch, based on "Goldeneye", and due to be expanded with an extra level soon. Taking the map from the Strategy Guide and converting it to graph paper, then using that to map out the Nerf arena, adding dynamic lighting... it looks as if we have some rather clever map-making going on here! Reviews should get added shortly, I know I am looking forward to doing some exploring.
Policer_O has e-mailed to report that his dedicated server has now changed its name to "Thunder Clan's Dedicated Server" - that is the only change, so it's the same great taste, and the same wide range of arenas.
Thursday 30th November, 2000:
SLAM has put a small update on his site, which is looking good without frames; an interesting screenshot too! If you had any download problem with Assasinator's maps (Homestead isn't very good at offering file downloads), don't worry - Sharpknux has got all three added to the NerfArenaBlast.com site.
Is a clan war looming? Relations between DS and KnC seem very strained, mainly due to the actions and attitude of one fairly recent addition to the Killer Nerf Clan ranks. Stay tuned...
A recent e-mail:
Hey man, me Reaper. I uninstalled NAB about a week ago, everything, including
Stone Henge and all the other maps I was working on, Cargo Remix, Sky Dive, I had a lot but didn't let them out. If there are ANY imposters on NAB with my name, it ain't me, cause I uninstalled da game:-). C yah.
Saturday 2nd December, 2000:
Assasinator has got a new map, the expansion of 007 Basement Remix to include a more spacious upper level: 007 Library. So go to his site and download it, yes?
Sharpknux reports that he has finished Galleon Remix. It should be added to NerfArenaBlast.com today. He already has Fetid Sewers 2, 007 Library, and from B-Ball Fith Remix BETA, and he's working on a "Matrix" style remix from Unreal Tournament. "It kicks", he says...
Boomslang has a direct link to the demo for the new Laser Arena game on his site, running to 6322K. It is a similar type of game to NAB, developed by Trainwreck Studios, so you may well want to give it a try. I found the graphics a bit strange, being used to the more "realistic" renditions of NAB, and the game did tend to stop occasionally while the hard disc caught up - while the music was exactly the same as NAB for me! It played pretty well, though, so why not download it, and see what you think!
Rainmaker and Black Dragon attempted to resolve their differences yesterday fighting one-on-one, but it must have been a pretty short fight as Rainmaker had to leave, with BD reporting a 1000 to 25 points victory... For more on that general subject, and other interesting stuff, check out Justin's massive update on his website...
Sunday 3rd December, 2000:
Reaper reports: "About Laser Arena... I have the full version game, and frankly, it sucks. If you have an ATI 3D Card, it will reject it and say all this rubbish such as "Invalid Page Fault", that's what happened to me. Any other video card will do, but you have an option of using the software, or the video card. The video card gives you the 3D graphics (excluding ATI video cards, which I have), and the software gives you this rubbish 16-bit game. The only way you can play online is by knowing the person you want to play with's IP address, or Gamespy. I tried Gamespy's software, it is a bit confusing and I found nobody playing. Gamespy currently has no support for the Laser Arena demo. Well that's about all my criticism for this $2-worth game, which is frankly a piece of [rubbish], which I wasted my $15 on."
Monday 4th December, 2000:
Well, no sign of Galleon Remix from Sharpknux on the NerfArenaBlast site yet, but his Matrix Fix Remix is there - a large download, but that is mainly the commando skins and a "matex", to go in your textures file. Mikemaf's Gladiator Dome download includes the "tlabcomp" textures file, which is a useful one to have - you will need it for Black Dragon's Nuts, and I expect a lot of mapmakers will be using it in future.
I played in a server using a mutator on Saturday; you spawned with a TS ready, and that was the only weapon in each arena. Winning players (such as Black Dragon) got fat, most of the rest of us got comically skinny. You don't need any special download in your files; if the server you join is running "fatboy" or whatever, you join in the fun!
Tuesday 5th December, 2000:
A small change of address - if you have this site address as www.nerfarena. com, in future you will go first to our new "Welcome Page", which has some links (internal and external) and just the latest single news update. It ought to download a lot more quickly! If you use www.homestead.com/nerfarena1 /index.html, then you will still come straight to the long "Main Page" - which is fine for those of us with broadband (cable or DSL) access.
I have downloaded Galleon Remix now, and Rainmaker has now added his
Final Shock to their listing, an improvement on Shocker (beta). A nice big update from SLAM, who has got most of his shiny new site-arrangement working now...a bit behind with the new map downloads, though, it seems. He is assembling his team for The Great Nerf War; a bit like the early part of a "caper" movie where the various members of the gang are recruited, I suspect. Still time to sign up, I am sure!
An e-mail sent to Custer and SLAM, 6th December:
Here's a forward of the reply I got from Hasbro asking where Nerf Arena Blast was at on their web site. Basically they don't answer the question.
I checked every web site listed in this reply and only 2 still have NAB: Amazon.com (in 2 places) and etoys.com. Amazon.com has a jewel case version for $9.99 and a boxed one for $20.99. etoys.com has the boxed version for $27.99.
They never did say why atari.com now goes to Hasbrointeractive.com or why Nerf ArenaBlast disappeared when they made the change. Just a few weeks ago, Atari.com was up and had NAB on it. I believe that Atari has been a part of Habro for several years. My NAB box has Hasbro's name in several places on it.
Wednesday 6th December, 2000:
Sharpknux's Galleon Remix is a bit of a "beta", with bits that vanish from certain angles and other strange stuff. Fun though, especially using the "fly" cheat! On Mr.BoBBo's site, you can download a remix entitled Faces of Faraohns; have a book to read while you do it, though, as it is 1.69MB, which after unzipping comes to 5.11MB. Must be a big place!
The DS/KnC war is over; Rainmaker and Black Dragon are now sworn pals and buddies (probably). Scouse has got "builder's block" on Waxworks, and is working on The Game instead for a while; he has also signed up to join the TGNW team. Tiggy reports that he absent-mindedly put out a mutator pack without any weapons...a revised version is now available from him! Policer_O hopes to do the "nerf texture" version of Pressure Remix soon; his Thunder Clan Dedicated Server ought to get its revamp and general ping improvement soon, too.
SLAM has changed his main page address slightly, though the old one refers you automatically; his update reports that Atari have gone out of business, which sounds like bad news for the future of NAB - though who can tell, maybe someone else will purchase the rights!
Thursday 7th December, 2000:
King returns from exile: Yesterday was December 6th, so as promised three months back, NerfKing has returned! I left the game to use MSN Messenger to tell (G)Ranger(s), so that he could pass word to Spike, and by the time I got back online he had gone, but it looks as if our top, longest-serving NAB player and all-around media star is back. Which makes one wonder who it was nearly a month ago (see Archives for 10th, 18th & 20th November) who said they were leaving for good, in his name...
Justin's site is growing, with another new page and a lengthy update, so be sure to check in there; and SLAM is contemplating doing a new version of Forest. Improvements he is thinking of include adding gentle hills and valleys, adding more bushes, making the logs smaller so that you can see over them, making the water swimmably wide and deep, making it possible to climb the trees...and maybe a tree fort. I think that last item is just not in the spirit of the map, but the others sound fine. A "no risk" situation, as we'll still have the original map to play - but e-mail SLAM if you want to tell him what you'd like to see in Forest 2: The Trees Strike Back.
Tux_the_Penguin has reported on the Hasbro/Atari NAB situation; his e-mail is on the Archives 1 page. And Rainmaker was spotted online testing an arena called
Friday 8th December, 2000:
Mr.BoBBo has released a new original map, Forts - it should be available from his site now. Look on his pictures page for some screenshots, including one of me looking dashing and handsome - as I usually do, of course!
There seems to be a fashion for screenshots; a rather strange "wrong texture" picture of Forts of Independence can be found on the DRC Clan Index page, and I have put a picture of Black Dragon on our own Players page... at least until he comes up with the blackmail money! I blame Justin for starting us all doing this...
SLAM has updated, with news that Hasbro Interactive, which includes the Atari portfolio, is being taken over (more or less) by Infogrames, the huge French gamesmakers, which rather explains the strange happenings on the Atari website, etc. And Tmon, FeEdiKo, and Mr.BoBBo have joined the The Great Nerf War team. Over on NerfArenaBlast.com, Sharpknux has a cautionary tale about what not to delete when you've got the computer set up for multiple users.
Tux_the_Penguin has passed his Microsoft test to retain his MCSE qualification, and can now get back to some playing and map-making - congratulations, Tux! Justin reports that DS Clan seems to be gone (which may explain why clicking the Darksiders link from NerfArenaBlast.com takes you to a dating service, "Cupid Key"), with Rainmaker and Merlin no longer in it; he has added SLAM to his Hall o' Fame. And FeEdiKo reports that he is working on a map called TimeRift - he has already sent me three texture files it will use!
Saturday 9th December, 2000:
B-Ball has posted a revised version of NightOP Remix, NightOP Remix 2, which can be downloaded from his website; he has also got an improved version of Fith Remix (no longer a beta) for us. Added to his list of future maps is something called
Gateway Remix. Over on NerfArenaBlast.com, Sharpknux has added his own very small Volcano; he says that his attempt at a new "Matrix" map seems to have gone wrong, but he is doing a low-gravity Moon arena. Also on the list there is Gladiator Dome 2, but as yet I just get a "Cannot Find Your Page" screen when I try to download it! They have also added Mr.BoBBo's latest pair of maps, Forts and
Faces of Faraohns. Justin has added that pair of maps as well, with the former called WarForts. He is also asking for some feedback from visitors, so sign his guestbook, nominate somebody for his Hall of Fame, guess where his screenshots were taken, and vote in his poll!
Whiteflame Clan have revealed their new website, which can be found at http://go.to/whiteflame. Members include Duo, Supreme, White-Flame himself of course, Tmon, and Tux_the_Penguin.
Sunday 10th December, 2000:
Justin is working on a complete retexturing of Skyscraper Arena, which seems a good way to start map-making. Mr.BoBBo has released a couple of screenshots of a new map called NoExit, which you can find on his site; Asteroid Arena textures, and he promises lava too! FeEdiKo has run into problems with TimeRift; all a bit technical for me, but I gather he is trying to make the map in UnrealEd, and then export it to NAB, but it seems to be insisting on UT Bots... SLAM apparently got a bit over-ambitious with a map called Celestial Cathedral, and may not release it as it tends to crash; he has received a map called Brettsworled, but would like a little background before he checks it out, in case it is concealing something nasty...
The general verdict on Laser Arena seems to be that it is okay for a budget game, if it is compatible with your graphics card, but that the extreme difficulty in arranging online playing makes it not very attractive. If it had come out over a year ago, then our NAB would have been greeted as a great improvement!
Monday 11th December, 2000:
Sharpknux has got the Gladiator Dome 2 download working (the problem was that he hadn't noticed that Mikesmaf had spelt it Gladiotor); he has also set up a rather useful-looking NAB Forum, to which we have added a direct link, so check it out! Escaflown2057 has left NAB, and Merlin will vanish too, as he relies on the college computer; he might play the odd game when the next semester/term starts, though! Galen99, leader of the Jesus Loving Guys, has a new website running; he will offer his own maps for download, though so far that just means BattleField (RR: 6.5), reviewed a while back.
Dr Ryan reports that Screamin' Demons clan is no longer active, but oldtimer Manta has brought back Army Clan, which he (or Revolver Ocelot) has joined! And Justin mentions that Santa (Black Dragon) is planning to bring us a map called
Killer Heat if we are all good boys and girls, set in a health-sapping desert...though not until after December 25th, because as we all know, Santa is a bit busy until then, right?
Mr.BoBBo should post NoExit on his site today. It plays well!
Tuesday 12th December, 2000:
FeEdiKo has finished his TimeRift Remix, and has posted it on the DRC clan site; for a screenshot of the arena before Fee added the textures, check out our new
Screenshots page - we promise it downloads more quickly than Justin's! The space-sky effects are gorgeous, and it looks like another very playable place to visit.
Mr.BoBBo has moved his site to Homestead, so it will download a lot faster than his old one; we have changed our links. Not that he's finished adding his pages yet, but it's a start! The new NAB Forum seems to be off to a good start, too; it will be worth checking up on the latest postings there every day, I think...
Wednesday 13th December, 2000:
Sharpknux has posted TimeRift Remix on his site, and also Black Dragon's Nuts,
Cross Beta and 1.1, and Dome Remix Beta, plus one that is new to me, LightShow, which is 2.5MB big!
Not a lot else new on the various sites; the only item I can report on is our own
Screenshots page, which has added some interesting pictures, including views of
Aureecom Remix and Gekokujou Remix, both maps that FeEdiKo is working on. The flying-eye view of Gekokujou in its untextured state came out very well, I think. Taking pictures is easy in NAB - just hit the [F9] button. Then, later, open up PaintShop Pro (or some similar program), and in the "open file" box type C:\program files\Atari\Nerf\System\Shot0001 or any other number, and see what you find. To convert the picture into the economical jpg format, click "edit" and then "save as", and with jpg chosen, go for it. Homestead imports jpg-format pictures easily. With any luck, a shot or two of Reaper's unfinished Stonehenge arena should be added to our selection soon. Since copies of the map exist, how long before one of our mapmakers finishes the project?
Thursday 14th December, 2000:
Justin has posted his first two maps on his site. Alien Planet is his remake of
Skyscraper Arena, though he warns us that "nothing is as it seems", while Sequoia Bonus is, logically enough, a re-texturing of Luna Bonus 2, with a whomper to keep things interesting. They sound like fun. All those updates and now making maps as well - how does he find the time...?
B-Ball promises a revised version of Elsinore Remix on his site today, with the video screens removed so that the "lagginess" is lost.
Scouse has bad news - his computer has caught a virus, deleting most of his files and leaving empty directories. So, no site updates, no playing NAB, and the maps he was working on are probably lost. Let us hope that he can get things cleaned up, and come back to us soon! Reaper, on the other hand, sends us this message about Stonehenge: "I would rather prefer it if no one used my map as a building basis. No one can finish it except me, I do rather get angry through the copyrights. Don't release the map, though keep it, I might come back to NAB and build on it..." Yeah, come back, Reaper!
Friday 15th December, 2000:
Not a lot of action to report. Our Screenshots page has added shots of the two Justin-retextured maps; Sequoia Bonus is as much fun as the arena it was based on, while Alien Planet, though fun and clever, may be to much for your system to cope with, with all the flashes and animations. And your computer may not like it either!
Thunderbird has been having problems getting access to the NAB server on a couple of evenings recently. Is there a widespread problem (I know Merlin had the same experience), or is it just a one-off?
Saturday 16th December, 2000:
The revised version of Elsinore Remix, from B-Ball's own site, is a good place to play, all decked out in Nerf colours, with lava and a secret passage to a rather useful sniping position. The team animations that made the first version so "laggy" have been replaced by six rather nice screenshots, to make a kind of "art gallery".
Black Dragon tells me that one of NAB's oldest clans, the 82nd Air Pressure (82AP), has reformed, with members including its old general, SLAM, and Hobbes (still better known as peanut butter fan Skippy). I really managed to annoy BD in a
Windy Remix game - well, if we are at opposite ends of the map for a full sniping distance, how am I supposed to know that he is standing still to type?
Sharpknux has added up the votes, and the second inductee to the NAB Hall of Fame is - Justin! For his skill at playing, the tireless work on his web site, wacky sense of humour, and generally being a thoroughly nice player to know, I guess...
Have you checked out Sharpknux's NAB FORUM yet? Join up, and join in! Some topics seem to have been getting a bit fierce lately, with Sammi and Sharpknux in particular, um, "agreeing to differ"... and Dodo and Sharpknux, come to that. Merlin posted news of his departure; he should be back in January, but he relies on the computer at college, and cannot play NAB back home. He had a "departure party" online yesterday afternoon; I don't know if anyone took a group shot, he was taking individual screen shots of the other players. Something to remember us by!
On the subject of the NAB Master Server, Reaper tells me that it is Gamespy, who also support Unreal Tournament. If Gamespy has to go off line, we all go off. So remember to play on the Gamespy servers, so that they can tell there is still an active NAB online community...
Sunday 17th December, 2000:
SLAM has updated, with a new map that he has created, taking us to The Next Level; it needs the Quake 3 textures file, which he also has available, or if you have
Nali Temple Remix then you already have it. And Tux and Tmon have also finished and released Ride the Dragon Remix, which looks like another of their top-quality, faithful remixes, with a couple of texture files and the traditional ReadMe thrown in. Their next project is remixing 1 on 1 Judith Remix.
Both maps look excellent; when I was in SLAM's with a couple of other players who have done mapmaking and remixing themselves, they were both impressed with what he had done, and thought it looked like a remix of some UT map they didn't know. And I have only had a brief look at Ride the Dragon Remix, which uses a more contemporary setting, but what I have seen looks very impressive, especially some heaps of builders' sand and gravel!
Alopex is starting a library of screenshots of as many players as he can get; if you see him online, choose your favourite weapon, make sure you are looking your best, and volunteer. Or maybe you can get him to join you in your favourite arena, even! I am told Alopex is working on his own website, which will no doubt display the shots. Oh, and Dodo has a downloadable demo of an animation called "Dancin' Wes"...
Monday 18th December, 2000:
Sharpknux has posted the three new maps from the weekend on his site, NerfArenaBlast.com; he says he does have some other maps to post, but his password to upload them wasn't working. SLAM assures me that his old clan
82AP is not reforming, Black Dragon must have been mistaken there. And talking of BD, he has e-mailed to say "the BIG news is that my nerf game is, how can I say, F****** over - I don't know why, it just is." He hopes to work on getting his website up over the holidays, however. And let us hope that he can get NAB to work again, because the place won't seem the same without him. It's bad enough when people just decide to stop playing, but we are getting too many people whose computers suddenly just won't play NAB. Try reinstalling; try uninstalling followed by a new install; try playing the demo and we'll drop in and visit!
Better news was that Reaper was playing NAB on Saturday; whether or not he is staying around, and going to take an active part in things once again... well, watch this space...
Mr.BoBBo has completed -=FinalLevel=-, which should be released soon; a good, friendly place for some interesting games!
Tuesday 19th December, 2000:
Elvis the Elf passes word from Squirrelking that the Elf Clan have left us for two weeks for their midwinter festivities. Galen99 is also away from the 21st to the 29th; I guess quite a few of the rest of us will be off on family visits, too! Dragon reports that Dragon Clan has lost its co-leader, Darklord. He is keen to recruit new members, so visit the Dragon Clan site, right? The link is on our Links page.
Homestead seem to have changed their standard font, leaving me with less space than usual. Luckily, there seems very little to report today. Oh, if you like "Jingle Bell Rock", then you should visit Galen99's web page, definitely!
Wednesday 20th December, 2000:
The new "bold" Homestead lettering was just too overpowering, so let's switch to the regular type of text, shall we? If anybody objects, we can always switch back!
Not much activity again, and the run-up to Christmas moves into its final sprint. The only real action is on the NAB Forum, so if you haven't signed up for it yet, do click our friendly links-button and drop by! Was the "Dodo" who really annoyed Sharpknux the real Dodo's brother, stirring up trouble while our hero was away from home for a few days? How many languages is Sammi fluent in? Is Reaper going to be making any new maps? Will Black Dragon, with the help of his brother, manage to get his computer to play NAB again? Is it polite to leave a game after only a minute or two, if your skill or ping is outclassed? Can you pick up points when somebody else did the actual shooting? There is only one place you will find the answers!
Tiggy (at The Blast Zone, alias Nerf.UnrealEngine) has been playing with a SnowMo, a modified nerf cannon that fires snowballs. And he has the screenshots to prove it - in the Sequoia Arena, it looks like a White Christmas!
Friday 22nd December, 2000:
Well, if there had been any news yesterday, I would have reported it. Black Dragon was playing online - but I didn't think to check if it was the Real Deal, or somebody else impersonating him! Duo tells me that he is about halfway through constructing a new arena; hopefully, the Holidays will give him the time to finish it!
B-Ball has some new record scores for the standard offline arenas, played at "mega nerf" level. The total score for the 20 events is well over a million now. He and Mr.BoBBo plan to work together on making a special new map.
Icedude's site is at http://nerfyarenas.homestead.com/home.html; you can download his Master Computer remix there. Ions, who provides the "fat boy" 13th Monkey server, has his site at http://13thmonkey.cjb.net/ - and has an original map for us there, Quickie-beta.
And don't forget to visit the NAB Forum regularly, right?
Saturday 23rd December, 2000:
Sharpknux's new map Floating Island has been out a couple of days; after playing there a few times, I can pronounce it weird! The review will go into more detail, but in case you like to discover strange traps, pitfalls, hidden oceans and rafts with, um, strange properties, without knowing it all beforehand, I will keep quiet here.
Not everyone was who they appeared to be yesterday evening; an imitation "Mr.BoBBo" said that he was actually BD/Santa, which seemed a bit pointless. I rather assume it wasn't the real Black Dragon! It may not have been the genuine article, since the Elves said they were off to their winter festivities, but Squirrelking came online to say that his entire clan was leaving NAB. They intend to venture into the harsher territories of Unreal Tournament, so wish them luck! Boomslang has now got NAB reinstalled, so we can expect to see him online again. Policer_O has removed Box Canyon Remix due to incompatibility problems on the Thunder Clan Dedicated Server; he has also updated HiSpeed Remix to the version with the bounce-pad at the back that allows you to get onto the top of the carriages!
Master Computer, when I tried to run it, insisted it needed a textures package called "commandoskins_m", which is 2.59MB. For an arena which is basically a retexturing of Luna Bonus 2 in the style of Matrix Fix Remix, is it worth the effort? Ion's Quickie-beta looks fun, though, for two or three players.
Well, Christmas is very nearly here, so it's a good time to wish all our visitors a very Happy Christmas, or any other holiday of your choice. Good luck with all those new games waiting for you, and hurry back to NAB. I don't know how many of us will be playing online over the next few days, but I do intend to drop in when I can. Mr.BoBBo is off on a Christmas trip, for example, while B-Ball is staying at home and intending to play lots of NAB. Whatever you are doing, have fun!
Sunday: Christmas Eve, 2000:
SLAM has updated, with a new map, Target Tag Original, which he designed for team play. Each team defends their base, and attacks the enemy base at the far end. In the enemy base, you need to hit something which reveals points-targets in your own base, which your defending team members can then use! The map is very large, especially the main hall in the middle; it plays fine for non-team servers too. To save time, SLAM re-used some chunks of The Next Level (which was his previous level, heheh), but it all looks very good.
Sharpknux has added Nuts Lava by Black Dragon to his downloads.
If you wondered why Black Dragon yesterday was playing as "Death", it is because he, SLAM, Justin and Wes have formed the "Four Horsemen" group, "the four best players in NAB", based on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. SLAM is War, Wes is Famine, and Justin is Pestilence, so feel free to greet him with "Hi, Pest!" when you next see him. Oh and I was joking... it isn't Wes, but West, as in West Sieydder Supreme... Though, strangely, he has just circulated to his entire NAB address list a furious e-mail: "I'm out, how dare you all call yourselves friends. I'm leaving NAB. I don't know what came over all of you but most of you are all acting like pricks. F*** most of you all for being my so-called friends." And more!
So, anyone know what was going on? I know I have been in some rather fractious games lately, normally with KnC members present, with some taunting and bad temper and pre-start cheating. It doesn't encourage one to stay very long!
SLAM is planning a map based on the "Crimson Skies" game, and also one based on the "Four Horsemen" [4H] alliance; he is looking for somebody to help maintain the website, as it is all taking a lot of time!
This is the text of the e-mail from West Seiydder/Supreme, sent to just about everyone in his NAB address book:
Im leaving NAB. I don't know what came over all of you but most of you are all acting like pricks. F*ck most of you all for being my so-called-friends. Hope i don't see you (you know who you are) in hell. If I had a gun to my head, which I don't, I'd pull the trigger with no regrets, but since I don't feel like taking my life, and since I can't get my hands on a gun, I'll just leave what was so good to me. My motto *Don't Like me! Bite me! Don't love it! Shove it!* This is \/\/eSTSieyDDeRSuPReMe, WestSieydder, Supreme, WestSidePlaya, VertigotheDizzy, Famine, Kudran, and all other names I use signing off, and god speed to you all to get out of my life!?!? And for all you I don't know, I'm leaving Nerf. Short and sweet. SD, DS, EF, WF, KnC, Oi, 82AP, DX, AK, CK, 4H *you pathetic betrayers* and whatever clan I was in, and the clans I wasn't in. Goodbye hope you all turn on each other like you turned on me.
Here is my quote which is going to be heard a final time and never again.
Unless you read the Bible but then your just a weirdo.
I am the Alpha and the Omega.
The Begining and the End.
The Birth and the Death.
well, just the death. of you!!!
-The D mans' quote from which he says in his ex-favorite game, Nerf Arena Blast.
For a little background to this, Justin sent me this report:
About what WestSieydder said. Yesterday I saw him and it was TTO, Me ,and SLAM against Death.(All 4H) After that Famine(West)comes in only to be booted
out by Death! he keeps trying to come back ,and SLAM tries to stop him, but it was too late Famine left. After our game we joined Nonbodys Friend's game. He
was going on about how noone could be friends, or could be trusted. We found out that was West Sieydder Supreme. He seemed to have left 4H, and Private Ryan (Revolver Ocelot, Dr. Ryan etc. lol) seems to want to join for him. I'll see what happens....
Monday: Christmas Day, 2000:
So here it is, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and let's all have a Great New Year as well! Have a wonderful day, and if you can't fit a bit of NAB in - well, see you when you are fully recovered!
FeEdiKo was working hard to produce a special Xmas arena; if he manages to finish it today, he will post it, and its associated texture files, on the usual page of the DRC Clan - Troy's page. Meanwhile, Dodo has got a revised version of one of his maps, Static[a], on his site. "The first Static looked like some crazy thrill ride so I redid the sky, threw in a dash of this and that and some funky lights, and there ya go. Static[a]! Merry Christmas!!"
Icedude has his remix of Orbital Bonus on his site: Merry Christmas! It looks good, but you will probably find you need PU-TL-misc and PU-TL-out texture files to make it work; these can be downloaded from SLAM.
I played my first team Target Tag Original game yesterday, with B-Ball, Lucky, Icedude, FeEdiKo, Duo, CurtSquirt and one or two others; I think Mikesmaf was there later on, and maybe Black Dragon earlier? It certainly works beautifully, if one can remember which end is "home"! I was rather pleased that I was able to make an 8-player server without any particularly high lag.
But if you will excuse me, I have one or two parcels to unwrap downstairs...
Tuesday: Boxing Day, 2000:
Nothing to do with Mike Tyson - it is just that in Britain the day after Christmas Day is called Boxing Day, trust me on this one. The well-off used to distribute "Christmas Boxes" to the needy, apparently!
Well, FeEdiKo got into trouble with the remix he was working on, and I must announce that Christmas is cancelled - or at least postponed. Instead, Fee showed me round a new map he is remixing, HoverCraft (based on UT's DOM-WolfsBay) - and, since I took the [F9] camera with me, you can check out the bottom of our Screenshots page to see what it looks like, at least before the textures are added. A realistic-looking hovercraft speeds across the sea, its radar dish revolving. This will be cool!
Tmon reports that he is working on a new map, no doubt with the assistance of Tux the Penguin: Golf is the name, and it is a Target Tag map! Tmon says "I am having some trouble because I have never made a map before, but I have asked for some help." Always a good idea. FeEdiKo got the microsoft "Gamevoice" for Christmas; there is actually a free download for other people (with a microphone) to use the special talk system, though without all the special features, so Fee had me download that, and faint noises were heard. We could hear coughing pretty well, though with speaking, it seemed advisable to type "subtitles" at the same time!
A major update from SLAM; he has added the Target Tag mapmaking details, news of the "Four Horsemen", and a very positive review of Laser Arena; the full game (and it is only a $10/$20 budget title) includes something like Target Tag and UT's Domination, and SLAM intends to run a dedicated server. So I will watch to see if it appears in Britain! B-Ball also made a small update, including news of the new record for 20-event offline playing: 2,834,775 points, with a confirming screenshot, by FeEdiKo. Wow! Offline he seems to play as Jami, going by the screenshot...
Wednesday December 27th, 2000:
We have closed down our "Which Is Your Favourite Arena" Poll finally; Space Noxx
just edged ahead of Deck 16 ][ Remix, 26% to 23%, with Frigate third. Our Arena Reviews are updated, with Static [a] being added to the original Static review on the third reviews page. And check out our Screenshots page for some more shots of
HoverCraft, now with quite a lot of lighting and texturing done by FeEdiKo!
Rainmaker has been spotted testing a map called Afterlife - nice name!
With the success of the NAB Forum (which, as SLAM points out, is actually a Bulletin Board array), is there much point in keeping our Message Board, lower on the Index page, going? Use it, or it goes...
Thursday December 28th, 2000:
Afterlife has been released, and can be downloaded from Sharpknux & Rainmaker's www.NerfArenaBlast.com site; it is a first map by Pimp, and greatly impressive, with wild textures, secret doors and rooms, pitfalls, bouncepads - but I was rather hoping that my afterlife would involve sitting around on fluffy clouds learning to play the harp, not running around surrounded by flames being shot at!
We have added a screenshot of Icedude's Merry Christmas map to our page of such things. He is now working on an original map called Skatecube, which I think will take us all skateboarding. Dodo is developing BabyBoy, and has posted a pair of preliminary screenshots on the NAB Forum.
I am still halfway through a review of Target Tag Original by SLAM, but if you haven't acquired his map yet - go get it! You will be glad you did!
Friday December 29th, 2000:
Lucky reports that the list of games for the NAB Tournament has been posted - so let the games begin! Icedude seems to have been very busy lately, as he has sent me Circular Forts, which, uniquely for a "new arena" comes set up both for the usual pointblast and also ballblast! Download it all from his site. Thunderbird is working on Aggressive Tendencies Remix - hmm, sounds a bit violent... Sharpknux, meanwhile, is working on a new, improved Floating Islands 2.
Laser Remix is by B-Ball, and can be downloaded from his site; I played there with Boomslang, B-Ball, Thunderbird & FeEdiKo, and it was a great place to dash about in - though all those stairs could tire us out! You can get it from his site, and why not vote for your favourite NAB weapon while you are there, in his new poll?
The review of Target Tag Original is up now, on Arena Reviews V - it is the first map to get a "Reaper Rating" of 9.5!
Policer_O reports that his "Thunder Clan Dedicated Server" has been having ISP problems - but the good news is that the improved computer & connection should kick in in mid-January!
Saturday December 30th, 2000:
We now have a pair of screenshots of Aggressive Tendencies Remix, courtesy of Thunderbird; find them at the bottom of our Screenshots page! And Sharpknux has released (on the NAB.com site) his Floating Island 2 reworking of his map. With any luck the "giant squid" that grabs you beneath the raft will have gone, and the raft's bouncer will be strong enough to get us back up to the top!
Word reaches us of a mysterious new clan, "Guards of Nerf" - whether it is a regular clan, or a "super-group" to rival the strife-torn "Four Horsemen", I am not sure, but some heavy-duty names have been mentioned...
Sunday December 31st, 2000: New Millenium's Eve
SLAM has updated his site, with a pair of new maps - cut to The Chase, a first map by Techno, and a little something called Target Tag 2001, a revised and improved version of the first "Target Tag" map. A version called TTO2001 was available briefly - but it had the tiny problem that one of target hatches wouldn't open! Ions is going to host a continuous New Year's server for "TT2001", starting later today.
Well, how do we follow that? With news of an upcoming map that is itself a devastatingly clever idea, and looks as if it will be a wonderful game to play! Check out the bottom of our Screenshots page for a couple of pictures taken in an "beta" version of B-Ball's SH-BasketBall Center! It's ballblast, Jim - but not as we know it. With the kindly assistance and support of Mr.BoBBo, B-Ball has created something that ought to be tremendous fun. "Shooting a basket" is tricky, but that is as it should be, as you will want the game to last a good long time; and quite possibly players who are not usually top scorers may find that they are aces here.
B-Ball also has quite a few other maps under development, so check out his "Coming Soon" section for some really nice-looking screenshots of remixes such as
IsKran4 Remix, Tundra Remix, Gateway Remix, and Nitro Remix, with Talath Remix to follow.
Boomslang has updated his site, too, with news of his upcoming "Participate" server, and he is also asking for subscribers to a big weekly Newsletter that he intends to start.
Monday January 1st, 2001: New Millenium's Day
The first millenium A.D. began in year 1 (since they forgot to have a year zero), and so the third millenium begins today. Happy New Year!! The Target Tag 2001 dedicated server began, but for a while was not running as team pointblast, though that has been corrected now. Remember to delete Target Tag Original 2001 if you downloaded it during the hours it was available from SLAM, as it was faulty, and half of us can't get into any server made with it!
NerfArenaBlast.com has added The Chase (by Techno!), SLAM's Target Tag 2001 of course, FeEdiKo's brand-new HoverCraft (a remix of the new UT map
DOM-Wolfsbay), and, from Diablo, Arena_12Remix, which is a remix from "The Wheel of Time", so that our trusty nerf weapons replace the swords and spells.
HoverCraft is also available from FeEdiKo's own specially-constructed site, http://feemapsone.homestead.com, which has a rather cool screenshot, and allows you to download the two new texture files you will need separately. It was a very popular arena last night (if you could find somebody who could tell you where to download the thing!), and rightly so, as Fee has taken a lot of trouble over it, and made a very cool place to fight.
The first first-round winner in the Tournament has been announced, so well done CD member CurtSquirt! Remember Ions will make a server of the map of your choice, for a specific time, if you e-mail him (email@example.com), to make things fair for you and your opponent. B-Ball's site has news of a new offline record for Skyscraper Ballblast: 325,250, by Eric. You have to admit, that is an awful lot of balls! If he can do as well in the other ballblast arenas, FeEdiKo's 20-arena total will be in danger...
Tuesday January 2nd, 2001
Thunderbird showed Sammi and me around his new arena, Aggressive Tendencies Remix. At that time there were still a couple of minor texture bits to finish, but it was generally large and lovely, with a "flying disc" elevator that should be popular. It ought to be released today, I imagine, so watch for it.
Black Dragon's new site is up and running, with at least 20 pages to click through. Many of the pages are just a title and an idea so far, but it all looks very promising, if BD can devote the time needed to fill it all up. Interesting screenshots, I am glad to see I am not the only one who gets weird textures sometimes - and I must launch an enquiry to find out how he managed to snap a picture of the Clan Destiny mascot, "Tiddles"...we like it to be a surprise when she comes on during a team game!
Have you notice a map called "Cacophony of Silence" being played, and not known where to get it? Well, it is actually Diablo's Arena_12 Remix, coming up under the different name - rather the way that all Skippy's maps tend to have two different titles! Icedude, meanwhile, tells me that he is working on a new ballblast arena, SH-Pooltable. It looks as if there is a sudden fashion for new ballblast maps, and not before time. Now if I can just persuade somebody to try their hand at making a new speedblast course or two...!
Mr.BoBBo has finished a new map called BabooS; it wasn't available for download from his site when I checked, but presumably soon will be. It seems a nice friendly conventional map, but I managed to miss out on the chance of a guided tour, so don't know if there are any secrets to be discovered. A main room, with ramps and a raised part, a corridor from one side, across the top, and down again... another room which just houses an impressive block proclaiming it to be an official "NABdotWEB" arena... It all looks to be highly playable.
Wednesday January 3rd, 2001:
Sharpknux has added Thunderbird's fine new Aggressive Tendencies Remix to his site. You may have noticed that there are 2 versions of "www.NerfArenaBlast.com" to choose from; our links take you to the "classic" version, while for Reaper's "new look" you need either to be redirected from that official address, or use the URL http://nab.wigloo.com/Index_2.htm. Both front pages seem to carry the same news at the moment, but we will keep an eye on things! Apparently, Sharpknux reports, Supa_Dude/Poad/Bingo The Clown is actually only seven years old (the same age as General, and older than Boofer...)... not bad, eh?
But the main news of the day has to be a new remix from Tmon & Tux, Pahgio Remix, which is available from Tiggy's site, "The Blast Zone". So, go and grab it, and put the map in your maps file and the textures in your textures file, and prepare to be impressed!
Black Dragon has updated his new site, and is wisely putting his news on his front page. BD is thinking of giving away his share of the JLG clan (won in battle); he currently owns one-third of it, along with Hobbes and Supa_Dude.
And I may have fallen a little behind on the reviews front, but that is because I have been working on a "new look" of my own for the Screenshots page - do check it out! It is not quite finished yet, but instead of scrolling down forever, now you just choose the small "thumbnail" picture you want to view, and click on it... and you get the full-size version, substantially bigger than it was before! The old page is still up, for the moment, just change the address from "/shots.html" back to "/screenshots. html" and you should be able to find it. Oh, and a tip for Black Dragon, and indeed for Boomslang too: if you want to have a "Hi! Click here to enter my site!" page at the front, do make sure that the bit we need to click is visible, and that we do not have to scroll down the page to get it into view. It makes sense...
Thursday January 4th, 2001:
On his website, Black Dragon announces that he is leaving the elite Four Horsemen
group. And he has given his share in JLG clan to Duo, who has apparently finished a new map called ShipDeck. BD also gives details of a game-variant called Hyper Run, a kind of "tag" best played in "god" and "rapid" fire mode!
Check out the Dragon Clan site, and you can get married online! If you can persuade the other player of your choice that it is a good idea, that is! Dragon himself (not to be confused with BD) will conduct the ceremony for you - scroll down to the foot of his main page for details. By the way, while he was away his site was "hacked" by his brother - but things should be back to normal now.
B-Ball has released Isv-Kran4 Remix as promised - it is on his site. It took him a while, but it looks as if it was worth waiting for. It seems to be rather complex to explore, with a lot of hatches and elevators to try to trigger!
Yesterday evening we had six Clan Destiny members online together, without any prior arrangement. Pretty good, I thought... and the Screenshots page now has 24 shots you can browse through, so do have a look.
Friday January 5th, 2001:
Dodo has released a third edition of his latest arena: Static[fixything] is the name, and the main change is that it now supports Bots. No other major update news has been sighted, but a look at the NAB Forum array is always a good idea. The "discussion" of the merits of certain quick'n'easy new maps has to be the highlight! Please note that we are likely to have to skip a day (maybe two) this weekend, due to pressure of other stuff; I am unlikely to switch on the computer on Sunday before 8:00pm, sigh...
Saturday January 6th, 2001:
Sharpknux & Rainmaker have updated, and added Duo's new map ShipDeck; I am not sure what purists like Dodo and Skippy/Hobbes will make of it, as it is a rectangular paved area, with a hut containing weapons and ammo. A railing keeps you from falling off into the sea, though you should just be able to jump it if you fancy a rather quick drowning... I also noticed Tempest Remix, by Black Dragon and J3Sus, on their download list, which seems, from my quick visit, like a nice large, many-roomed remix map, well worth acquiring! It was added earlier in the week, but there were initially problems downloading it, Sharpknux tells me. They have also added Pahgio Remix, Static [fixything], and Isv-Kran 4 Remix. Which is nice...
No update here tomorrow, so don't do anything newsworthy! In the meantime, Thunderbird and his friend Diablo are now the "Flying Finns", and have added "(FF)" to their playing names. But are they any good on the flying trapeze...?
Monday January 8th, 2001:
SLAM is working on a special arena for HyperRun, which he calls HR-Crushtime. There is a racetrack to the end wall, and the "wall man" is inside a well-shielded room. Once the runners get near the spot, they can hit a button - and the fellow inside the room gets crushed. Once you are inside the room, you cannot get out, so the crushing is inevitable. SLAM has designed things carefully, so that you can play the game without having to use "cheats", as in the original version.
Techno has sent me a copy of The Chase 2, which is kind of like the first map (The Chase, right?), only bigger, and with some interesting additional ideas. Since he is one of our top speedblast players, at my suggestion he is working on a speedblast map now. After all, we only have the six to choose from as yet! Black Dragon is working on a map called Face][ - and I can confirm that Alfie is back, a long-time NAB player, clan leader and website maker!
I played a good game in B-Ball's Isv-Kran 4 Remix recently; all the lifters and doors, with their different triggers, make for a fun time, and a challenging map to find your way around. I guess I must be ready to write the review now!
Tuesday January 9th, 2001:
There is an item about NERF ARENA in the current issue of the British PC GAMER magazine (page 104, the "Netware" section) - and it's a plug for the mutators at Tiggy's site, "The Blast Zone", so well done that man!
Merlin writes to say that he has "committed himself to a crusade against Kaleah of WF. My goal is to relentlessly pound her and all WF members until she apologises for the racial slur against me. Until that day when a formal apology has been made, or she is stripped of her command and membership of WF, I shall not rest, for she has insulted my religion without any knowledge of what she speaks of."
Tux & Tmon have run into problems ("a difficult BSP hole problem") with the 1 on 1 Judith Remix they were working on, so work on it has been tabled for now... And Black Dragon reports that he has a lot of work to do preparing for exams, so we won't be seeing much of him at present. Check out his "pic of the day' to admire Pimp's new hairstyle!
I started to play NAB without remembering to put the disc in the computer yesterday - not the first time! But this time it worked, because I had left the Unreal Tournament disc in. Sharpknux confirms that, providing NAB is properly installed, this does usually work...after all, NAB does use the UT "Engine"!
Wednesday January 10th, 2001:
The Crosswinds servers were still down early today, meaning that SLAM's and Dodo's sites were offline. We do however have a new addition to our Links Page, a site from CurtSquirt, so check that out (though be warned - the "rvx.net" pop-up banners for "find a date" keep popping up!), and also check Black Dragon's site, and see if you can work out what went on in NAB between them! Whatever it was, Black Dragon has got EW (is that "Elite Worriers" or "Effete Warriors"? I can never remember) to declare war on Clan Destiny. "EW" (pronounced "Eeee-eewww...") is a new elitist clan, risen from the ashes of the "Four Horsemen" superteam. Clan members include, BD says, himself, Ryan and SLAM - though BD is also still the leader of KnC, despite rumours that he was quitting...
Merlin, alias Randle Flagg, has resolved his differences with Kaleah, and they were last seen playing happily together in the Sequoia Arena. As for me, well you may know that I was having problems with NAB freezing, and couldn't play "UT" at all without freezing during it, or when I tried to quit. I have now installed Norton Utilities 2001, and no more freezing, no more problems! If you can get this at a good price, perhaps in a bundle with Norton AntiVirus 2001, you may be glad you did!
Remember to keep up with the NAB Forum, using our handy link. Our Arena Reviews V page is pretty much up-to-date at the moment; with any luck we should add a few more Screenshots shortly, so do check by there... and hey, we went over the 10,000 visitor mark, so thanks to everyone for dropping in! The counter went back to zero, so we will have to work on that!
Thursday January 11th, 2001:
Mystery, doubt and confusion over the future of Black Dragon, leader of the Killer Nerf Clan and a leading force in the new "Elite Warriors". His website today says "Now today I have learned not to trust close friends, not going to say too many names. "EW" has been left to SLAM, to do with as he sees pleased. I am leaving NAB for a couple of days. I will be back for KnC - I will never give up on them like someone has given up on me, I am not going to say any names either. I have left "EW", and Ryan, how should I say, left "EW" too. I could say it a different way, but I think he would get mad. Well, one thing I am glad about: Sammi doesn't hate me any more." But I also received the following e-mail from BD this morning: "Man, don't worry about it, because there is not going to be a war. I am leaving "EW" in SLAM's hands now, until I come back from a long journey. I am leaving NAB for a long life journey, and I don't think I will be back."
So, will "BD" be back, and keep KnC going? Let us hope so! In other news, Techno has released his very large The Chase 2 map (revised a little from the version he sent me earlier), though with the Crosswinds servers still out of action this morning, how soon will we see SLAM's site to look for it? We are adding FeEdiKo's website "FeeMapsOne" to our Links page, and getting ready for a ruthless cull of the old sites that are never updated. At the very least, they will be consigned to the bottom of the page, and the sites that are regularly worth visiting moved up and highlighted.
Dax is starting The Rookie Commando Unit, a clan for the newer online NAB players - talk to him online for details! And Mac is now a third "Flying Finn" (FF), joining his friends Thunderbird and Diablo. And Alfie is involved with a new clan called ICE - more on that in days to come, hopefully!
Friday January 12th, 2001:
Sharpknux has added The Chase 2 to his downloads; it looks as if Black Dragon has left, at least for now; our Screenshots page has been expanded; Crosswinds servers are still out of action; and we have added a link to the ICE website, run by Alfie, to this page!
Sunday January 14th, 2001:
Well, Sharpknux kindly sent me a copy of the map he is remixing from UT. The textures are far from finished, but Matex looks exceptionally cool. It isn't the first map to be based on The Matrix, but you don't just get the one hall, you get a whole office complex above, with a helicopter on the roof...and if you go out into the street, you can even go down into a subway station. And there are special sound effects, so be prepared to add a new file to your "sounds" section! The textures so far added look excellent... and we have added a couple of screenshots from this work in progress to our Screenshots array. On an unrelated matter, Sharpknux has decided, along with Hobbes/Skippy, to crush CD. Whether or not Clan Destiny wants to be crushed, we will soon discover. CD might decide to ignore a small amount of noise from a couple of outsiders, who can tell?
FeEdiKo's website, FeeMapsOne, has an intriguing screenshot of Morpheus - but not as we know it! It's not just the grim and gritty texturing, there seems to be a fourth skyscraper on the scene now... Let us hope that we will be able to give a full report on a finished remix soon.
Monday January 15th, 2001:
Techno has sent me a copy of his new speedblast map, Racetime; it isn't finished yet, but we have put a couple of pictures of it on our Screenshots page. The main problem is that Techno needs to work out how to get players to respawn by the last flag they passed. Otherwise, it seems quite promising, though actually reaching flag one is a bit difficult!
Not much activity on the other sites, which is unusual after a weekend. A new "sub-clan" called Damage Jedis has been announced by Curtsquirt, "like IcE or EW" he says. I guess there is no harm in these secondary affiliations, but they do make things more complex, as they cross clan boundaries. If two clans are at war, but they both contain members of Elite Warriors, then where does that leave the "dual" members? Or what if IcE gets into a disagreement with a clan, but some of its members are in that clan? It all seems over-complicated, and sooner or later people with more than one set of initials associated with their player-name may find they have to choose where their main allegiance really lies.
Dax informs me that he is hoping to have a website up and running to support his Rookie Commando Unit, a group that newer online players will be able to join for a bit of mutual support, which sounds like a good idea. More news when we get it, or when you send it to us, or something!
Tuesday January 16th, 2001:
Sharpknux has updated NerfArenaBlast.com; the new addition to the Hall of Fame is Thunderbird, so congratulations to him! And Sharpknux has also decided to run for President (of NAB...today Nab, tomorrow the World!); he has also decided that I am running for President too (that's me, Custer, right?), and that any other would-be candidates should e-mail him. And Black Dragon is back, and annoyed that I had suggested that Sharpknux would make a good replacement for him as leader of the KnC. Okay, BD - nobody could really replace you, I admit it! Just don't "leave" us again, or who knows what other mischief we will get up to behind your back...?
Wednesday January 17th, 2001:
My understanding is that Sharpknux has closed Presidential nominations now, and that the candidates include him, me (co-opted), B-Ball and SLAM; voting procedures now need to be worked out, to eliminate "vote early and vote often" cheating, not to mention hanging chads. This morning the dozy "Crosswinds" crew still have not restored SLAM's and Dodo's sites to their servers...
Icedude reports that he is hoping to do a remix of a UT map, AS-Caparetto; I am not entirely sure, but I think that is a map he himself is making for UT, so the two versions will appear at about the same time!
Black Dragon is still on his Life Journey (aren't we all?), but has decided that it does include playing NAB; he is now calling himself "Wizard", but any name with "KncLdr<EW>" is usually him. His site update mentions sight of an "NT" clan, and also two annoying Rabbit-playing "campers" both using the name VIVI, or \//\!
Thursday January 18th, 2001:
B-Ball should have his new Talath Remix available from his site, by the time you read this; he is doing some final testing as I write! He also plans to remix
Anachronism, Frantic, Oracle, and RustyInc. Sharpknux has put the Presidential Election Poll on his site (NerfArenaBlast.com); the first time I looked it was ten votes each for him, me, B-Ball and SLAM, while my latest check shows...hold on...11 for B-Ball, 11 for Sharpknux, 12 for SLAM...and 18 for me. I gather that the term of office is only until the end of February; FeEdiKo has agreed to serve as my Vice President, should we win, and Black Dragon has kindly volunteered to take the post of Secretary for War.
Assassinator sent a pair of very cool screenshots from an arena he is working on, using custom urban textures made for UT; the map is a long city street, with a kwik-e-mart, theatre, park, etc, that you can go into. I may attempt to put them on my Screenshots page, if I can find them again! They look very good.
SLAM tells me he is working on a map which he will release as pointblast, speedblast and ballblast versions. The idea for the map came to him in a dream, and he thinks it all should work rather well!
Saturday January 20th, 2001:
Sharpknux has added Talath Remix to his downloads. It seems an excellent place to do battle, so do add it to your files! The "Presidential Election" continues - I don't know when it closes, so if you haven't voted yet, go to NerfArenaBlast.com now. It is great to see so many people voting...now, if we can only work out what a NAB President will be expected to actually do...
Boomslang reports he is working on a new map which he hopes to make like an "Indiana Jones" adventure. ?(Undecided)-IndianaJones Attempt is the working title; it should be similar to Speedblast, only borrowing the idea of creating a new version of gameplay, like SLAM's TargetTag. Boomslang calls this RacePoint. And he is doing a UT remix too: Conveyor Remix. Coincidentally, I played the UT version last night, and it looks good, with (of course) moving conveyor belts! And a new version of Deck 16][Remix is coming, too, with "Nerfish" textures, and three different wall colours, for base areas or just to help newcomers find their way around. With any luck, Boomslang should be able to send me early versions of at least the two remixes soon, to allow me to post screenshots. Assassinator has also promised to send the "beta" of his "City Street" map soon...
