How it all started

In 1919, Belgian King Albert the First opens the first flight school at the Gosselies airfield. The school sits on the highest point of the Gosselies region, named “Shepherds’ Hill” (Mont des bergers).  The following year, the firm SEGA starts aeronautical maintenance work which will lead in 1931 to the launch of the Fairey Company which in turn will become the center of Belgian aeronautical activity.

After WWII, Gosselies becomes a public airport and is managed by the Belgian airways administration (RVA). In 1954, Haren-based SABCA teams up with Fairey to open a second plant at Gosselies. Later on, other companies set up at Gosselies. Sonaca is set up in 1978 to take over the activities of Fairey.

However, on the air transport front, few initiatives last. Despite the attempt of a scheduled twice daily service to London, results are frustrating. It is therefore decided to tackle the problem head on.

It is in this spirit that Brussels South Charleroi Airport company (BSCA) is launched on 9 July 1991. This takes place in the context of the upcoming transfer from the Belgian State to the regions of the management and operation of regional airports which takes places on 1 January 1992.

The Walloon Region decides then to grant the management of its two main airports, Charleroi and Liège, to limited companies operating under commercial law. This is the mission given to BSCA whose main shareholder is Sambrinvest holding.

Management resources are put in place in 1992 and 1993, which start to take effect in 1995 and more so in 1996.
