Naturopathic Education

A Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) attends an accredited, four-year, graduate-level naturopathic medical institution after obtaining a basic pre-med undergraduate education.  In addition to the basic medical sciences and conventional diagnostics, the naturopathic doctor is required to complete additional training in therapeutic nutrition, homeopathy, botanical medicine, physical medicine and counseling.  The Naturopathic Doctor receives over 4,000 hours of training during his or her education including 1,500 hours of training at various naturopathic medical clinics.  This clinical education occurs under the supervision of licensed Naturopathic Physicians and provides the naturopathic medical student with a minimum of 500 patient contacts prior to the completion of his or her education.

A naturopathic doctor takes rigorous basic science and clinical board examinations so that he or she may be licensed by a state or jurisdiction.  Passing the naturopathic physicians licensing examinations (NPLEX) is required before a Doctor of Naturopathic medicine can be licensed as a naturopathic physician.  Dr. Edwards holds a naturopathic physician license in the state of Connecticut since New York does not currently regulate naturopathic medicine; however a licensing effort is currently underway in NY.

Dr. Edwards received his Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, the oldest accredited school of naturopathic medicine in the US.  National College of Natural Medicine's primary accreditation is granted by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, one of six institutional bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  The naturopathic medicine program at NCNM is accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education.  For more information you can go to www.ncnm.edu.
