Failure to fund criminal justice inflicts high S.C. toll

Monday, March 16, 2009
As our economy continues to struggle, much media attention has been given to the impact of budget cuts in state spending for health, education and welfare. Sadly, the public may not be as well aware of just how devastating it is to cut funds needed to support our system of justice.

Use stimulus to help ease state's debt

Sunday, March 15, 2009
I don't believe it's wise to spend money one doesn't have. This is true in our personal lives, it's true in business and it's true in government. While that is my opinion, and one shared by many across this state, it was not the prevailing view on the federal stimulus bill.

CARTA will use federal stimulus funding wisely

Friday, March 13, 2009
Local governments all over the country currently face important decisions regarding how to responsibly use recovery money under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in the most effective, efficient and strategic way. The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority is fortunate to be one of those local governments.

Incinerator has served Charleston County well

Thursday, March 12, 2009
Charleston County Council will soon decide how to best handle municipal solid waste (MSW) in the future. This is a matter of some urgency since the county's MSW incinerator is operated under a 20-year contract put in place in 1989 and which expires later this year. I hope that the individual council members first become fully educated on the facts before drawing any final conclusions.

CARTA plan won't provide enough local jobs

Wednesday, March 11, 2009
What is the main purpose of the $787 billion federal stimulus package? If you answered 'to create jobs,' then you should be wondering why CARTA voted recently to spend nearly $4.75 million of the anticipated stimulus monies to purchase up to fifteen new buses built outside of our county rather than investing the funds in the local economy.

Substance abuse reality argues against decriminalizing drugs

Tuesday, March 10, 2009
Steve Chapman's Feb. 21 op-ed in The Post and Courier addresses the 'reality' of the long and losing Drug War. I would place his drivel in the 'two-cents worth' category. Apparently it was prompted by some Latin American commission's startling conclusion that the 'Drug War' has been lost. I hope the commission was well paid for this bit of earth-shaking news. Chapman then moves right into the worn-out arguments against such a war and for the de-criminalization and treatment model. And this is his 'reality.' It's not mine.

Forced unionism is the ultimate anti-stimulus plan

Monday, March 9, 2009
As they settle into the White House, President Obama and his advisors publicly and repeatedly insist that they place national economic recovery over every other goal. However, when it comes to labor policy, the new president and his administration also constantly repeat their support for measures that economic history indicates would significantly delay recovery from the downturn we are experiencing.

Obama plays 'The Music Man'

Monday, March 9, 2009
One searches, but in vain, for the logic that stands behind the Obama administration's plan to get the country out of the horrible mess it's in today. If it is true that a decade of irresponsible spending of borrowed money by individuals brought about this sea of troubles, how can it be that vastly greater spending of borrowed money by government will make these problems go away?

Let SPA board, not politics, run our state's ports

Friday, March 6, 2009
There are some in our General Assembly who are proposing that we eliminate the South Carolina State Ports Authority's Board of Directors and make the SPA a cabinet agency under the governor. At the same time, they propose changing our port's operating style. This is not in the best interest of South Carolina.

Academic Magnet would benefit from proposed move

Thursday, March 5, 2009
Recently, the Charleston County School District's Board of Trustees asked representatives from Academic Magnet High School to ask its community members (Class of 2011 and 2012 households, as well as faculty and administration) to vote on this question: Do you support a move to the new building, which is being built on a shared campus with the School of the Arts?

House panel shortchanges counties

Wednesday, March 4, 2009
The S.C. House Ways and Means Committee recently approved slashing funds to local governments by $122 million — a 42 percent cut in what counties should receive under the statutory formula in the State Aid to Subdivisions Act. While many state agencies are seeing budget cuts that take them back to FY 2006 funding levels, the effect of this 42 percent cut takes local governments back 15 years — to FY 1995 levels.

South Carolina should unite for choice in education

Monday, March 2, 2009
As elected officials go, a lot of people might be tempted to view us as the 'odd couple.' One of us is black, the other white. One is a Republican, the other a Democrat. One is from the Lowcountry, the other from the Upstate. One is from the House and the other from the Senate. In a word, we are 'unique' — which means we have something in common with the hundreds of thousands of children who attend our state's public schools.
