Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud Running Microsoft Windows Server and SQL Server (Beta)

Amazon EC2 running Microsoft Windows Server® 2003 is a fast and dependable environment for deploying applications using the Microsoft Web Platform, including ASP.NET, ASP.NET AJAX, Silverlight™, and Internet Information Server (IIS). Amazon EC2 enables you to run any compatible Windows-based solution on AWS’ high-performance, reliable, cost-effective, cloud computing platform. Common Windows use cases include website and web-service hosting, high-performance computing (HPC) and data processing, media transcoding, distributed testing, ASP.NET application hosting, and any other application requiring Windows software. Amazon EC2 also now supports the SQL Server® Express and SQL Server Standard databases, and makes those offerings available to customers on an hourly basis.

Using Amazon EC2 with Windows Server is similar to using Amazon EC2 with any other operating system. Amazon EC2 running Windows will provide seamless integration with existing Amazon EC2 features like Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) and Elastic IPs. At this point, the only limitation is that customers can only launch Windows instances in one Availability Zone. We expect this to change in the near future.

Managing your Amazon EC2 with Windows Environment

You can manage your Amazon EC2 environment using our web service APIs. We provide a C# library that wraps these APIs, so that you can build and deploy your applications within .NET.

In addition, Amazon EC2 provides a convenient FireFox plug-in, ElasticFox, to help configure, launch, terminate, and even bundle your Amazon EC2 instances from within your FireFox web browser. ElasticFox allows you to easily leverage a graphical interface to implement all of the features of Amazon EC2, including Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes and Elastic IPs. To learn more about ElasticFox, please see our ElasticFox Getting Started Guide.

Using Authentication Services

Amazon EC2 offers you the flexibility to choose the version of Windows Server that meets your needs. Our base Windows image provides you with most of the common functionality associated with Windows. However, if you require more than five Windows accounts or need to leverage applications that require LDAP, Kerberos, RADIUS, or other credential services, you must use Windows with Authentication Services. Example applications that require Windows with Authentication Services include Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SharePoint® Server, or other applications that require end-user authentication.

Amazon EC2 running Microsoft SQL Server

Amazon EC2 with SQL Server offers you the flexibility to run a database server for as much or as little time as you need. We offer Amazon EC2 with two versions of Microsoft SQL Server: Express and Standard. Microsoft SQL Server Express enables you to make use of up to 4GB of memory. AWS provides a publicly available AMI that is prebundled with SQL Express, Internet Information Services (IIS) and ASP.NET to help you get started quickly. Many customers use this version for their Web 2.0 applications and ASP.NET applications. This AMI may be used with Amazon EC2 running Windows Server at no additional cost.

The Microsoft SQL Server Standard edition does not have a storage limit, which enables use cases that require larger databases including enterprise-scale Windows-based applications, massively scalable web sites, and high performance computing applications. Both versions of SQL Server integrate into Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), enabling you to take advantage of the persistence, performance, and reliability of Amazon EBS for all your databases.
