Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin has returned to Russia to be with his ailing grandfather and will miss Tuesday's game against the Nashville Predators.
The left-winger flew home Monday morning and has been listed as day-to-day by the Capitals, who willl monitor Ovechkin's family situation in Russia.
The team said it doesn't know when Ovechkin, the NHL's reigning MVP, will return to the lineup. After Tuesday's home game against Nashville, the Capitals visit the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
"We know he won't be here [at home against Nashville]," Capitals spokesman Nate Ewell said Monday. "But we don't know beyond that."
"He had to go and he wanted to be near [his grandfather], but if you know Alex, he doesn't want to leave his teammates," coach Boudreau added. "So that's always a struggle, but in the end, he knows what he needs to do — and that's family first."
Tuesday's game will be only the second Ovechkin has missed since joining the Capitals four seasons ago. It will also snap a streak of 203 consecutive games played dating back to his rookie season of 2005-06.
Ovechkin has two goals and five points in eight games this season. With files from Associated Press
