State of Oregon's Birds

Oregon is an amazing place for birds! Nearly 500 bird species use Oregon for some part of their life cycle. Of these more than 200 pass through the Portland Metropolitan Region each year. Our state ranks 5th in the nation for bird diversity. However many of our native bird species are in trouble. Nearly 25% of species found in Oregon are suffering long term declines and 11% of the species found in Oregon are either already critically imperiled or likely to become critically imperiled in the near future. The trends in our state reflect similar trends nationwide.

Two recent reports from National Audubon, "Common Birds in Decline" and "National WatchList" provide an in depth look at the state of birds in Oregon and across the nation.

"Common Birds in Decline" looks at species that are still considered common, but which are experiencing significant declining trends over the past 50-years.

"National WatchList" is a collaborative effort between Audubon and the American Bird Conservancy. This report assimilates the best current information on bird populations and threats to produce a detailed list of the most imperiled birds in our state and across the nation.
