Rivals to oppose Tigers' draft bid

Spot on unbelievable! Terry Wallace openly stated that it was imperative Polak stayed on the senior list & was not rookie listed to provide him with the added incentive he rightly deserved to return to the senior list! Richmond stated un categorically that they were not in the slightest bit interested in Cousin's until the great K. Sheedy placed last minute thoughts into their heads?? It is very poor management by the Richmond board to leave it so late; quiet simply they should have followed AFL draft rules & dead lines that "all" other clubs have abided by? Richmond can place Polak on the long term injury list' replace him with a rookie @ their leisure (whom has earned the right). They then simply draft Cousin's in the 2008 pre season draft with their one choice!! But no they want their cake as well as eating it?? (It would seem they have promised their pre season choice to D. Gourdis, creating a bit of a dilemma??) The club audaciously states that if the 2nd choice in the pre season draft is not granted then they will not select Cousin's; instead they will take the best "untried" junior! Therefore they rate a junior ahead of Cousin's; real confidence one would think?? Personally I feel sorry for Polak as a loyal tiger player who did everything right last year & must be seriously confused when more than ever he requires his club to stand by him & their initial promise!! Rookie listing Polak will allow the tigers to squeeze Cousin's into their salary cap; what happens next year if Polak is ready to return but cannot based on salary cap restrictions?? Good luck G. Polak you deserve it!

AFL refuses Tigers' request

The AFL has made a discraceful decision on not placing Polak on the rookies list it is my opinion that the AFL Com mission should be sactioned with bringing the game into disrepute over there handling of the cousins/polak situation and the ruling that rush behinds will give there oponent a free kick in front of goals in the Nab in 2009 WHAT A DISCRACE AFL COMMISION a bunch of old guys with no idea about football is all use are with a one track mind. I can't prop up Souths forever

Ace of Bankstown. You are thick when it comes to business. Using your analogy, the supporters are not employees but customers of the business. Its a matter of supply and demand. If the supporters (customers)want (demand) the product (Souths) then they must pay for it by becoming members. And in the business world, no proprietor would keep pouring money into an business eternally. All businesses are set up with investment money out of the proprietors pocket expecting that the investment will eventually make a return to be able to operate on its own. Learn some business basics before making stupid comments.

No Tassie team in short term

the decision to include more teams into the afl comp should be made by the current 16 clubs and their membership. the afl competition is made up from these clubs and their members, so the question is have the clubs been consulted re the 2 planned new teams ? the proposed 2nd sydney team will fail miserably as we all know the nrl has a vice like grip on the football code in sydney and is struggling itself to host the several nrl clubs based in the city. i'm a hawks fan and i believe footy is bigger than our club and its current sponsorship deal the the tassie government, therefore i'm all for tasmania having a team in the afl. WAKE UP Demetriou, footy is a lot bigger than you and the afl commission and the sooner you realise that, the better the game will be. the other football code (soccer) is gaining momentum quickly and will soon be a serious contender for preferred game attendance. australia will host the 2018 fifa world cup, thats not that far away so theres no time to waste. GO HAWKS 2009 !

Picture proof of Daly meltdown

Dear Sirs, I attended open on Thursday, keen golf fan, average player, wanted to see the great John Daly play, he has been there done that, nothing but admiration for him as a player at his level. As for his smashing of a camera, dork! On entry to course there was no large signs saying no cameras, every marshall sign had quiet on one side and no cameras, no mobile telephones on the other. Any golf fan should have been respectful and watchful in terms of only taking a photograph when it was acceptable to do so. I took a camera in, took many photographs of Daly, Allenby and Clarke but only when they were not in swing and never when they were putting. These guys are playing for real and I respected that and was deferential to their efforts. Allenby spat the dummy earlier on that day when a marshall walking the course behind the group took their photograph, he went off and told the marshall where to go. Did the marshall not read these alleged signs? I think these guys, players I mean, need to remember who contributes to the money kitty, the attending fans, the average golfers who subscribe to the PGA, sponsors. Some of these professional golfers are becoming such prima donnas. Don't move, don't breathe, wake up people! A message to the leading Australian golfers, as good as you are, and certainly a number of you are way, way good, none of you are that good that you can bring fans through the gate, that is why people like Daly are invited. To behave the way he did was poor, he reacted the way he did through frustration, why, he played a lot of bad shots, he missed a lot of puts, he made a lot of bad management decisions throughout his round, how do I know, I was there at 7.20am and followed him around because of who he is. I was very disappointed in his conduct, you cannot take it out on the people who pay the gate money, I still hope he makes the cut but Australian Golf has a bigger problem on their hands. None of the current crop of great Australian golfers can attract fans through the gate, they have no personality, they play money winning percentage golf, they are boring! I think a lot of fans want to see exciting, attacking golf from a personality bigger than Ben Hur, I guarantee you this, Allenby, Appleby, Ogilvy, Pampling could not attract a crowd to a free raffle, Scott has certainly made his intentions clear, has Badderly done the same with his non appearance? Clearly, Daly was in the wrong, the fan was in the wrong with his timing, our supposed good golfers are in need of a personality transfussion! If they don't get one then why go back to watch them play live, take the risk, see the chances they take, perhaps it would be better to watch them on sanitised television where the ads can take over from a bad swing and bad behavioural problems and the sanitised presentation of their play will match the sanitised standard of their personalities. It's now or never for Cousins

I have no real opinion on whether Ben Cousins should play in the AFL again. If he does, good luck to him, if he doesnt, well good luck to him then as well. I dont care much about second, third, fourth or how many chances misbehaving athletes may or may not be offered over off field indescretions (and how I wish certain journalists had no interest in it either... Hello Hutchy you journalistic ambulance chaser... but I digress..), however my opinion on whether Richmond deserve to receive a further draft concession when there are already established rules and options to deal with the unfortunate circumstances of Graham Polak's serious injury is that the AFL have ruled correctly. The AFL cleared Mr Cousins to be drafted, and have given every club an opportunity to pick him (including Richmond in the upcoming Pre Season Draft where they still have one pick to use at thier descretion) To put the AFL in the position of deciding on a club's decision for Mr Cousins potential or non selection is little more than emotional blackmail, using as a pawn an already traumatised Mr Polak. Shame on the Richmond football club for thier insensitive tactics in this messy and sordid affair.

Richmond unlikely to pick Cuz

i totally agree wid stevie g...we must get cousins, our team is young enough one of the youngest in the afl, and to get another younger player will be a waste coz i doubt that he will play any matches and will eventually delist him... With cousins in our side it gives richmond an extra dimension to our midfield and wid likes or richo in the forward line, there is alot of promise....this can be a decison which makes or breaks wallace....plz pick cousins or suffer the consequences.

Tigers can't have lion's share

If the AFL agree to this then they might as well wipe their drug policy...employing self confessed drug addicts goes against the very fabric of cleaning up sport...Why are Richmond using Polak..Could he have brain damage and this is Richmonds way of getting out of paying him compensation by devaluing him as a rookie....Then they might as well join Cousins in looking for a needle in a haystack..

Parliament 'a waste of time'

Less is Moore Clover raises a valid point. That independents have no place and little influence in the lower houses of government. Basically, she's an insect. Now the question remains, how does the "Climate Conference" relate to her job as Sydney's elected representative. So far we've seen roads around the city being torn up to make way for special roads for the elitists known as bicycle riders. That narrows it down to a bunch of hippies and couriers. We forget to ask how many others use their cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles, scooters and yes, the pedestrians. All of us are forgotten for Clover to indulge in her green glow. When she first ran for Lord Mayor, questions were raised on whether she could effectively represent the people of Sydney as Lord Mayor and also moonlight as our man in Macquarie Street. Imagine if you told your boss that you were taking on another job while remaining at work. Then you start having days off, what would your boss think? What would your boss do? The excuse that she was sick in May? If I took on two jobs that required my full time, I¿d be sick too. Don¿t forget her double dipping with two salaries. By ¿donating¿ her salary from her ¿time waster¿ of a job, I would love to see her tax return. So it comes down to this; if Clover finds her job as a time waster, she should do the right thing by her electorate and resign. The people of Sydney need a full time member. It¿s time for Clover to go.

Stay calm, mum and dad investors told

Matt from nowhere, let me assure you that by this societies standards, I am completely insane. Being well adjusted to a mad society is no gauge of your mental health. If you have a real look around the entire planet, you would be in denial if for one minute you assessed the activities of humans as smart, intelligent or civilised. Where is the smarts in starvation? How intelligent are beings at war? And then explain where you hid the civility is practically anything you do? You excel at murder, death and lying and still claim to be capable of measuring your mental health. Yep, its true Matt you are insane if you imagine name calling is an intelligent response. One more point Matt, my name is Mark, not Will. Mark S Filby.

He had experience, was in good form late last year after coming back into the side from injury and he wanted to play on....Didnt someone ie Knights talk to the senior players before they got rid of Peverill???? Doesn't make sense.....! and I reckon JJ could have gone on for a few more years....will miss him in the midfield..

$1.4bn to ease carbon trading blow

I will make 3 points; 1.For the reasons given by so many climate change is not a save the planet issue it is an economic issue and should be prioritised as such. 2. As so many have noticed, the "religious" overtones of climate change rhetoric including of course the "guilt" charge is very prevalent - undestandable for born agains like Gore and the Bible Belt in the USA, but not in what is usually pragmatic Australia. 3. For the one dissenter who one assumes is from the left (as they are so quick to lapse into personal abuse as opposed to rational discussion) this quote from Ronald Reagan applies both to you and the issue - "To make a conservative mad, lie to them. To make a liberal mad, tell them the truth"

Makes me wonder about the shortage of housing when a guy I work with says the brand new apartment block he bought into about 2 years ago is still owned 50% by the developers, and up the road from where I live a new bock of townhouses is being built. New rushing rule crosses the line

George of Burwood, you are technically correct but your logic is applied after the result is known. As the game unfolded, with a 3 point 'rush', Geelong would have been 'in it' right to the death and the intensity would have been there for all. The Hawks would not have been able to cruise the last 15 minutes and Geelong would not have realised they were done so far out from the end. Who knows how that may have played out. The real issue is, why do the AFL see the need to change the rules every time a team comes up with a tactic? Evolution is one thing, knee jerk changes for change's sake something else again. Of course, maybe the rules committee feel they have to justify their existance by changing something every year. What game is this again? It's different from the one I used to play.

It's about time ther AFL introduced the rule to get rid of rushed behinds...I fully agree, pay a free kick. We all know all those rushed behinds was the ONLY reason hawks beat geelong in the GF, so now that hawthorn can't do that there's no way they'll beat the cats again like that. You have to dare to win like the way geelong plays which is how the game should be played, not this negative style of play that hawthorn produced to win the GF.

There would be a dozen players who have tatts in most teams that you would not even be aware off?? Jiggy, new to computers are we?? The draft has been documented from pillar to post for a week or more, especially on Watt's, rich & Nat??? Stevie G, the Bombers have inside midfielders but were in desperate need of adding outside pace & a key defender; they achieved both with their first 2 picks in the draft! As for "All tattoos and no brains"; it maybe you who is lacking brain power, firstly you degrade the young man by stating he has no brains & then you wish him well??

I love it when i see a cop speeding because I just follow them. I've never been pulled over because of it but if i was I would just say "I thought my speedo must have been wrong because i was just matching your speed" Yesterday I saw one of those red cop cars nearly rearend a guy because he was speeding, he almost locked it up it braked so hard.

Polak rookie bid draws mixed reaction

Sour Grapesand poor logic Eddie - How does (what YOU call) a "one-off" situation (as though any future person suffering from cancer would not be entitled to the same consideration - as it was a "one-off" decision) not set a precedent ?? The fact that the injuries are not of the same type does NOT mean they are not of the same nature (long-term debilitating accidents incurred outside of football, where a return to football is eminently uncertain). The precedent which, I assure you,HAS been set is that the AFL commission can allow an older player to be placed on a club's rookie list under exceptional circumstances - why is this so hard for you to understand ??

Let Andrew Walker go for those Speckys like he used to do in his 1st and 2nd year. Walker's a sure success for Carlton, as will all of our top picks. As for Mark of Fremantle, Carlton's got more chance of getting Number 17 than Freo has of getting Number 1. And with Essendon Scum as the coach... "Freo way to go!" NOT!

Time running out for Davis

How can Brisbane not draft this bloke! He won them the 2005 flag and if Roos had him on earlier on in the 2006 Grand Final they probably would have won that as well! He kicked 3 crucial booming goals on a windy day in the og Grand final and he played superbly in both interstate finals against Port and West Coast. How can Davis not get drafted when guys like Leigh Brown do! I am not biased either, i am a Richmond supporter and would much prefer Nick Davis than Kane Pettifer! Brisbane lost games last season due to poor kicking and Davis is one of the best kicks for goal in the last decade!

Jockeys crack whip as strike looms

Paul and Trusty: so you're happy to work without workers comp coverage provided by your employers? Or you're happy to pay for your own private accident insurance to cover you for injuries sustained in your work place? (What about if the premium is 25% or more of your income, as it is in occupations deemed dangerous?). If so, then you are fools and deserve to be slaves. Trusty, it's easy to say you would race ride except your weight stops you doing it. Have you ever ridden a mad TB with no brakes or steering in a race? Or even in track work? I'd guess not. In which case, shut up about "the greedy little bludgers"...they're asking for what every Australian worker regards (or at least used to regard) as a right...that is, if they're incapacitated in the course of performing their duties for their employers, then at least their families have some degree of financial security.

Brown follows Wakelin model

Graham, I think you have it in reverse?? Wakelyn was an average player @ the Saints & a quality player/ person @ the Pies; anything less would be selling the man short! Terry I too hate with a passion the way the Herald Sun try to make news out of nothing when it comes to the pies($$$$$$$ one would assume). That said if you have a quick count of all of the articles/ & sub articles listed today there are only a couple relating to the pies!! The over kill was probably the BS the Sun baffled us all with for months on end over the Shaw/ Didak epic?? On top of this Malthouse & his team have taken a non star studded group of players to the finals for most of this century; you would be a brave man to bet against them not making the finals in 2009?? As for Brown, I think he will be a good fit for the pies as his preferred position was well held by the very talented Ferrito/ Petrie combo & he was forced to play out of position & simply lost confidence. The Pies were desperate as a priority & rightfully so to draft mid quality & by the time choice 73 came around the quality defensive kids were well gone. I thought it was smart recruiting to fill a gaping hole in defence especially if Presti does not come up again!! Note: Two prior defensive rejects listed by the Pies were T. Lockyer & J. Clement!

Origin 'rule' might have to be scrapped

As a Manly supporter for yonks, I reckon Dessie's done a stirling job, but not yet ready for rep coaching....another coupla years focussing on the SeaEagles' next two premiership wins should do it. In my mind, Big Mal, regardless of his origin duties, should coach the Kangaroos for the foreseeable future. He is no doubt the best (and fairest) on the immediate scene. But if ARL want's to shoot themselves in the foot by citing one man's (Fearnley) mistake as a basis for picking the most politically correct coach over a more talented field....Let's all go play tiddleywinks.

Mullet is worst craze of all time

I knew a mullet man and the thing was, with narrow face, features like a Red Indian and very thick hair, it looked great, totally suited him. I wanted to do his portrait. Sadly, as soon as the put-downs of The Mullet began, he cut his hair short. Turned out he was kind of lacking in the back of the head area, as it were. Overnight, a dignified looking bloke turned into a passive aggressive with a nasty side to him. The ears we'd never before noticed, stuck out. He looked cowering and took up snarling. I dunno whether people treated him different all round but the hair do which had suited him also belonged to a nicer person. As for Jason, during the eighties, there was a lot of silliness in fashion. On balance, I think that Jason's hair suited his character better than Kylie's bubble perm suited hers, but it's all opinionations, isn't it? I mean it's good to be tuned to fashion, but let's not fall into a trap of self hatred. If a style suits, it should be worn. It was Billy Ray Cyrus's song which was silly, not him. It was a huge hit with good reason. It was a send up and probably the hair was too. I mean, who CARES?

Barassi backs Tigers move

Ron Barassi has been my hero for nigh on 58 years and one or two slips on his part won't change that. He has slipped on this occasion, however, and has allowed emotion to cloud his reasoning. Firstly, the rules don't need to be changed to allow Ben Cousins to take up an AFL career again. Several opportunities have existed over recent months for this to occur. It required, however, that any one of the AFL clubs draft Cousins into their teams within the rules. To date, no AFL team has taken that step. There remains one more opportunity for a team to draft Cousins within the rules: Richmond can do that in the Pre-Season Draft. Secondly, the change to the rules that Richmond requested of the AFL Commission had nothing to do with Cousins: the change requested by Richmond dealt with the way Richmond managed the circumstances of their player, Polak. The requested change would not have benefited Polak in any way. It can only be concluded, from the information given out by Richmond, that they might take advantage of such a change, if it had been made, to take advantage of the anomaly the change would have created to gain an extra selection in the Pre-season draft, which some have surmised, would be used to draft Cousins.

Dad drowns while saving sons

How very very sad, another family destroyed. It amazes me that in this day and age of known problems in the water that people would go to a beach that didn't have life guards. Surely there were other manned beaches they could've gone to? Hopefully some good will come from this tragedy in the form of a full time life guard at that beach so this doesn't happen again. R.I.P to a man that was obviously loved by many. You died being brave. Well done also to the female surfer. I hope she gets some help as this will no doubt upset her greatly. And to the poor sons, don't blame yourselves for this, you weren't to know you were going to get into trouble and you weren't to know dad would come to try and save you. Please everyone, be careful around the water, life is so precious and as we've seen over the last few weeks, it can end in the blink of an eye.

Lions cop a $2.2m wound

The trouble with all teams outside of Melbourne is the supporters are like shadows - with them in the sunshine leaving them the minute they cross into the shade. Melbourne is the home of footy and the AFL should not prop up outside teams to the detriment of Victorian clubs - Tassie is the only other State that needs to be considered as they love their footy and the AFL hierarchy should hang their heads in shame for considering others above them.

Yze has no regrets

The Dess may regret letting Yze go, because they have so many young kids that they will be thrown to the wolves, and you need a few bigger bodied players to take the brunt and to have a serious crack at winning some games, why not re0-draft yz Melbourne and pay him on incentive based payments as well as a standard wage, his knowledge to the kids would be great and his body is still good to go. Yze has more to offer a young club, as a person he is sharing and caring and that is also needed both on and off the field.

NZRU in the money

mike - You have made some interesting observations & thoughts about NZ and Rugby opportunities. In marketing terms it could be called 'value adding' and that's a good thing. At present NZ exports coaches & players for which other places benefit for a price. Nothing wrong with that. But what I like about your idea is that far more benefit will be gained by NZ by bringing Mohammad to the mountain.

Circuit changed after death

What a stupid decision, the report says it was driver error, therefore leave the track alone. I mean, what's wrong with this country? Whenever someone, maybe just one person, dies in an accident, people want to change the conditions. Responses to deaths in motor racing just wrecks tracks. They changed Conrod Straight at Bathurst years ago, why, one person got killed, it was probably driver error too. What about Bathurst last year, didn't someone die in practice last year? They didn't change that section of track. I know, why don't all the V8 drivers race each other over the internet from home from now on, that'll solve everything.

Driving down a deadly toll

You are 100 per cent wrong,. Drivers cannot bring about the drop below 400 fatalitis or the year. Only the Police can. It is in all their indoctrination, spin and warnings put out at the end of each and every holiday/double demerit periods. It is entirely due to the diligence and hard work of the Police when there is a fatality free period. It is entirely due to driver stupidity and arrogance when there are fatalities. If you doubt this, go back and look at the media releases and sound grabs from their media liaison officers regarding this subject. So come on, boys in blue, time to do the hard yards and get the figure below 400 fatalities for the year. Lets see if you can do it alone, as you so often boast.

How you're holding back

Stating 3.9 million low income families is not exactly true. There is no cut off of the amount of FTB A paid for eligibility of the stimulus payment, and this means it can be paid to families making a combined income of $100,000 a year just as easily as to families making $30,000 a year or less. Isn't it about time you all put the broom of sweeping generalisations away and started accepting that just because a person has a child, does not mean they do not work.

Don't put the Bears in Gosford

i can only assume that Nick Walshaw is chasing some sort of notoriety? most struggling journos (Nick Walshaw) and most has been journos (Ray Chesterton) only do it to get or keep their name in lights. Nick - 5 years ago, the central coast had NO sporting team. They happily adopted a failing football team which reinvigorated itself and made the national leagues Grand Final in their first year. I've only just moved to the country from Gosford, where I lived oh, 500m from Bluetongue Stadium? So don't presume that everyone on the Coast is anti the Bears... i'd say from all of my friends and family and people i know on the coast (and i know a lot) that they'd happily welcome a Central Coast Bears team at Bluetongue! Maybe you are just a news ltd puppet like David Gallop, and you're only writing what you're told to write, but look a little deeper at the whole situation.

I note that Jeff Kennetts comments were mainly concerned about football clubs rather than the talented footballers who entertain us and who give football clubs a reason to exist. First home buyers 'storming into market'

Warning all first home builders!!!I urge first home buyers who will also be building to be very careful. I recently inquired about a knock down rebuildproject and was given a a quote of $40,000 for site costs from one builder and $9,000 for site costs from the builder next door at the homeworld display for an almost identical McMansion. Just watch it guys get a second opinion as builders are under the pump and will charge ridiculous site costs and BASIX to unsuspecting First Home Buyers. Ask for a particularised quote as the buildigng companies are a bunch of pr#cks. The experience put me off buying a block and building a brand new home as it is actually cheaper to by a completed new home in many cases.Builders are stuggling to unload the nicer homes as GEN Y first home buyers have no savings.I might even live my parents a little bit more. Earning 5.5% on my terms deposits is good enough until after Xmas.

Banks face billions in Madoff losses

This guy is but an example of the whole rotten system; he was just better at it than most. Just to give you a recent example. My sister is 75. She got a call from her super fund (which is controlled by one of the big 4 banks) to tell her that the particular fund she is in is experiencing a drop in membership. It was suggested she should transfer to another fund within the same group. The fee:$3000- fortunately she had her wits about her and got her daughter to talk to the BANK. The fee was reduced to $650; even that is a rip off. Seems that was the first time anyone refused to pay the $3000- no doubt the'adviser' gets a cut.How many poor superannuants and pensioners are being ripped off like this? We are the fools for putting up with this rubbish.

Desmond, without referring in any way to my team, I would say that the Dogs look solid next year, not good/great. You have an ageing halfback with a boring 5/8 partner, and the bench is only just break even. Your fullback/threequarter combo looks good if Utai and ElMasri can pull the finger out.

Richest get the lion's share

If you want the house to stand you must first build the foundation. An old Japanese saying is that it takes 3 generations to build a house of wealth. In Latin and Asian cultures where the family is held in great esteme it also takes 3 generations to build and consolidate wealth. Everybody knows his position in the family and works for the good of the family. In our culture of no blame divorce, fornication, and abortion we have weakend the culture of strong family units and encouraged selfish ambition and as a result each generation has to rebuild the foundation and doesn't have the encouragment and the support of family members in hard times to create wealth. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord . Familys that pray together stay together. You can believe anything you like that is your God given right but principles never change. God is not mocked You reap what you sow

I know that your going have a real solid crack next season, but Buddy I prefer that you kept it covered - if you know what I mean!! The guys 21 and out having some fun...just leave him alone. Extra pick needed for soft sell

What is the problem with the Tigers having 2 picks? Cynical? How, why? Fact - Polak got hit by a tram. Fact - Polak isn't ready to play any time soon. Fact - No FAIR minded person would have any arguement to not put Polak on the "rookie list" ala Ramanaskus. What Richmond choose to do with their extra pick is of no concern to anyone else but Richmond. Some will argue that they should promote from their rookie list. Why? Polak isn't a rookie is he? The PSD is the next available moment for the Tigers to increase their playing list to their full ENTITLED allotment. Those crying don't want the Tigers to have B. Cousins on their team sheet, they all had an opportunity to ensure this didn't happen by picking him for their own team but chose not to do so and now they want to tell the Tigers who they can and cant pick in the draft. Some people are wasting oxygen!

Dogs must lay off on Maitua NRL ban

I think Kent is right. However this the fool who in 2004 wrote the NRL should deregister Bulldogs players, during the police investigation into Coffs. It seemed Kent didn't allow those players the right of 'innocent until proven guilty'. When the Bulldogs players were cleared, I never read an apology from Kent. So Kent, do you admit you were wrong in wanting the NRL to deregister those players who were never charged?

allow him to play, but add a clause to his contract stating any more off field dramas or if you are found guility in court your sacked. clubs like brisbane allow players facing rape allegations to play where sharks managnment like to be seen to be doing the right thing morally. unforguntately morals do not win comps a win at any cost does. let bird play we may still may not win the comp but our chances are better if he does.

Tigers' power play on Ben backfires

I'm a Richmond fan and I'm happy with the way the club has handled itself over the past few weeks. It's a shame that the AFL Commission didn't see fit to assist Richmond under extenuating circumstances (as per Essendon and Rama), but I havent heard anyone from Tigerland whingeing about the decision, Knighty. So what if the idea to move Polak onto the rookie list was formulated to help snare Cousins, at least one club in the entire league was prepared to give Ben a second chance. Go the Tigers and well done to Wallace, March and company down at Tigerland, you've made at least one Richmond fan a very happy man.

Fickle bunch the Richmond supporters, only yesterday they were threatening to boycott their memberships and today they're all signing up. Cousins 'almost didn't happen'

This is a decision for football, a step forwards in a time when the game is being tarnished by the clowns running the show. Congratulations Tigers and Cousins, even if this partnership falls foul, it is still the best result we could have achieved. Richmond for showing spine and substance and the Cuz for enduring an extended media circus that left the line of disgustingly obssessed firmly in its wake. Cotchin, Tambling, Foley, Deledio, Tuck, Couglan and Cousins. The engine is is fine order, and Richo do the, um, Richo-role... Tigers playing finals all day.

Sydney's finals spot under threat

kossie you're right, sydney has had two legitimate penalties denied this season but as a watcher of most games, its clear that poor decisions from the referees are evenly spread across all teams. the coast has had two legitimate macalister goals denied costing the points in both games. a word to aloisi for his poor sportsmanship after scoring the goal. despite the correct decision being made regarding the retake of the penalty, bojic didn't impede, you missed. to the chronic whinger from wyong, if you hate the coast so much, why do you watch every game?

Jane... He was not allowed to have the camera on the course, Robert Allenbey allegedly told the same man to stop with his snapping. Daly should be afforded the same respect as any other player. This moron Clegg should have the book thrown at him, he is a golfer and should know better, his arrogance and selfishness is what caused this not Dalys' attitude, which in my opinion was fair enough given the repeated disruption to his round.

And buses might fly ...

OK, it appears that this idea is on the right track, (pun intended). However, let's think about where that track ought to be. No, I don't mean its geographical location. I mean ; in relation to the ground it will traverse. I say, forget tunnels and dedicated swathes of land that would be required for such a project, were it to go ahead as described in the article. Put the darn thing in the air! It can be built quickly, a hell of a lot more cheaply and it would be far more efficient and flexible in that it could be routed to cover areas that do not currently have reserved corridors for transport systems that are nothing but a pipe dream at present. Oh but, wait! There is a lobby out there that would say that something resembling a monorail would be ugly. OK, forget it. Let¿s keep the crawling car parks that pass for motorways and highways. They¿re a much better sight to behold, to say nothing of the air quality they produce. Oh, ain¿t politics wonderful? ¿ Bring on a dictatorship. I volunteer to be the first dictator, until the coup that is. I¿m sure I could fix Sydney¿s traffic and transport problems before the oil companies have me shot.

Or Geelong being pussies and avoiding him. I long for the day when we overtake Carlton on the premiership cup tally. I don't pay the toll. I refuse to pay to make filthy rich foreign companies ever richer, just so that I can drive along a public road. I refuse to use the toll roads, and toll tunnels. I am not the only one. The Government should get rid of the highly expensive tolls, and when that does eventually happen the amount of traffic on the toll roads, and in the toll tunnels will increase significantly. Tolls on public roads, and tunnels, is a good reason for dumping the Rees Labor Government.

Greg and kidk, he doesnt have to do anything... Why does it matter how much he makes - there is a demand in the States for big guys who have his passing and rebounding skills and hence the reason why he is on the big bucks (no pun intended) He's doing it as a great gesture to some old teammates, Hes not buying the league because it would be like buying Enron shares in 2002.... Hes doing a great thing and leave it at that... anyway your stats are wrong on the per game analysis of the Bogie man. Bogie gets injured oft, so you might wanna draw your figures from 55-60 games a year, Not to mention the times in which he gets into foul trouble... I'd hate to think what he gets per minute he is actually on the floor!

The failings of 'membership'

I look at every club & can see how silly many fans look & its not just the likes of the fellow from Parra. Whilst I agree with some sentiments in this article, I still beleive that there is merit in the club membership the way it is. It gives those fans, a means to have a say & shows that clubs are a democracy, they elect their administration boards, not the rants of the fans, who are like ocean tides. True loyal fans are the members & backbone of any club. However, I do believe that there is not enough incentive to be members, what do we get for the $25.00 annual fee? The annual report & a vote. Why nothing else, & I would think that its no different at many other clubs either. Check out the membership list of all the other clubs & compare, & I don't mean the individual supporters clubs either.

Itching for a scrap

It was with great sadness that I read the story on The Great Vinty Karalius, and with some joy that it filled the backpage in a major Australian newspaper, it showed what a great person and player he was. I watched him during his prime playing for my beloved St Helens along with the likes of Clif Watson, Alec Murphy, Dick Huddart, Tom Van Vollenhovan and many more great players in that great team. I heard many stories of his exploites both in the UK and also here in Australia whilst on tour, from another tourist at the time named Austin Rhodes, whome I worked along side in the UK. "Vinty" as he was called in the UK (although we liked it that you named him "The Wild Bull of the Pampas) was a Gentleman first and a Great English Rugby League player second, and couldn't English Rugby League do with the likes of him now. Rest in Peace Vinty and my thoughts are with your family. PS the other person in the Photo is not his brother Dennis (who aso played for St Helens) but the youngest brother Tony, he also played for St Helens and Great Britain as Hooker. Before a game he used to get changed, warm up, light up a ciggy, walk into the club bar and drink a glass of sherry mixed with a raw egg, while not being as big and strong as his elder brother, he developed a tackle called "The Cumberland Throw", this was many years before Alfie Langer did it. Tony's grandson has also signed with St Helens Accadamy, so the name Karalius is still being carried on at St Helens RLFC

They were not prepared to buy her C D'S because they didn't want to waste their money. Maybe it's time for Goodrem to scoot back to Ireland and help McFadden try to revive his plunging career...Jezza

Lennox tops '09 Hall of Fame list

Exactly right! Well done, Lennox. He lost fights by KO to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman, but was able to avenge those two surprising losses. It's a shame that he never got the credit he deserved in the U.S...mainly because he isn't American, and also because his era of dominance followed in the footsteps of Mike Tysons brief, but explosive peak.

Yeah you only have to look at some of the photos once to see it was not stable enough. Training on it doesnt test it that much.. no one is out to kill one another in training, game time is when its tested, and juniors playing on it? what with there packs weighing about 200-300kg less than an iterenational side. Maybe they just didnt take into account the southern hemisphere teams awsomeness! Haha.

Tom regrets 'arrogant' tongue-lashing

The name Tom Cruise makes me cringe these days. He has given so many stupid interviews and expects everyone to love him. Haven't forgotten the interview with Peter Overton on 60 minutes but now I guess Cruise is trying to patch up his damaged image as it has created problems for his career. Well, Tom, it won't make any difference to me because I cannot stand you, and less because of your weird Scientology beliefs. Why would anyone have faith in a cult that is only because of someone's ideas and opinion? Stop pushing your beliefs on us Tom, we've had enough.

Waratahs set for more risky business

I think Tahs fans are up for it. Bring on the risk I say and Hickey's the right man to get the Tahs playing out of their skins. Overall I'm expecting Tah fans to really get behind the new coach and embrace his ideas. I'd reckon it'll also result in a nice profit at the turnstyles too.

Cuz's number a tall order for Nick

Na That Takes the Cake Ill tell you now Ive been a West Coast Eagles fan forever and Im a Ben Cousins one Eyed Eagles supporter. When I saw the front page of the news paper I decided right then and there that the Eagles are a Money Hungry Insensitive bunch of...(Beep).....Creeps who dont give a shit about the loyalty side of the Fans. We dont just follow a football team but we admire and barrick for every god damn player in the Team. We love them, we are obsessed by them thats why we buy pictures of them or Team shots none that are cheep I must add. (How many hundreds of thousands of dollars did Benny make for the club with every chick and kid on earth wanting a picture of him -- oh he was great then hey) Not only that we feel there pain, we go down when they go down, were on a god damn one hell of a high when they win, just like them... One more thing the number 9 is not just a Number it was worn by the biggest of heros, the biggest of men, the biggest and most loved out of all the Eagles. The Biggest hero because he owed up to his weakness., and you ...(Beeps)... tore him apart. I bet Benny made thousands for the club.. just to be dismissed, an have his number passed on like hes nothing. We didnt even get the opportunity to suck it in because some of us FANS have still been hoping that there was a chance he could come back and you just rubbed salt in our wounds so if thats what footy is all about you can jam it. You will never get another cent out of me. I think Benny is a legend for admitting he had a problem addressed it to get our support and some what understanding of the drugs that are offered to our kids/heros. For F... sake Ben didnt invent the stuff. Anyone would of thought he did. hes a bigger Man then alot of you will ever be.. Now that ive got all that off my chest all the Best Benny and Im so sorry that the footy world can be so cruel and strip someone of everything that they have worked so hard for. Just because you made a slight misjudgement on what you did in your time off.. something you have never been tested positive on the footy field for... Just something he admitted was getting in the way when he was on holidays... To all the people who have decided to boot Benny lets hope your kids don't become drug addicts...... and get completely shunted by society.. and fellow Australians...then again with decisions that you make, its probably arrogant people like you who drive the kids too drugs. Put that on the front page of the paper....and No: 9 = Ben Cousins Forever xx

Rioli best on ground at home

Cyril Rioli was a star in the GF and he is only 18. I'd rather 10 hard-ball gets a game from Cyril than 30 possessions from high stat players like Jimmy Bartel who only seem to be the one link in the possession chain without doing any damage.

Miners lay off 500 workers

The mining companies never learn! You would think that after going through the last 3-5 years being constantly desperate for employees they would have had a well thought out and financial sound plan to keep them even when times were not so go which had to happen sooner or later. You can't expect loyalty from people (employees) when you continually hire and fire them just because of bottom lines and shareholders. When times get better which may only be a year or so, do the mining companies seriously believe that the people they fired are going to come back and work for them? Not likely, they will be lost forever. A small amount of the booming profits that nearly all mining companies have been making should have been set aside to allow good employees to be kept on even in bad times and not doubt some will have done this. Perhaps the ridiculous salaries paid to CEO's etc could have been better spent cause they are not as clever as they would have us believe, otherwise their companies would not be in the mess some of them are in. OZ Minerals is one and RIO is another, laying off staff left right and centre!

Bearish market waits for the bounce

Share market is extremely expensive. Great depression has took place for a simple reason that share market turnover exceeded GDP by 32%. This is simple as a whistle - sharemarket is a ghost of real economy, and ghost can not be bigger than real economy. At the current level sharemarket turnover is about 250% of GDP, and before sharemarket returns to the normal level of 80-90% GDP it shall drop to around 50-60%, which translates for All Ords around or below 1000 points. It might actually not go that low because of enormous amount of 'nobody's' momey injected last years into managed super, but there is no way All Ords can bottom above 2500 points. If that happens, we will be looking for even more powerful crash in 5-7 years time.

Doctors dob in colleagues

About time. Just about every doctor and nurse in NSW would know someone who needs to be more reflective about their practice but refuses to hear or see any feedback from their colleagues. But it is all about patient safety and standards of care, not doctors egos. However, this process of mandatory reporting will only succeed if it is not abused or misused.

Pim says stand and deliver

The first problem with this article is Graham Arnold is still in the mix. Please Frank Lowy get rid of him. Also why are they playing Asian Cup games in the middle of world cup qualifiers? Surely the world cup games are more important and hence most teams would focus on those and as a result, similar to our situation, you get lower quality players playing and as a result lower quality fixtures.

Draft hopeful in limbo

PS I just watched Jamie Shean play on Youtube and my Lord how the heck did this kid get over looked? Come on Stewie Maxfield, shove this kid on the Rookie list, he plays just like you did and with a mix of Paul Kelly, he chases everything, is incredibly fast, shrugs off tackles, is a speedy in and under midfielder and can go forward and kick goals as well as pass accurately, this is crazy he has not been picked up. He would be an absolute steal as a Rookie player. Go to www.youtube.com and then type in Jamie Shean and watch the first video that comes up, this kid can really pla. Pick him up Sydney. He'd get a game next year, and we have to wait a few years for Dan Hannenbery and Campbell Heath to do schooling and come on, this kid is ready to go after a good preseason and some bulking up.

Fluid ideology or inconvenient truth?

Anyone else in society who tries as hard as Ben Cousins to overcome a substance addiction is usually welcomed back into society with open arms. Anyone got a mate or uncle or sister in a similar situation? Do you remember how hard it was to see him or her descend so pitifully; so far away from the person you used to know? And then one day they got help. They tried then failed. Tried again. And again. One day much later you are having a cuppa with your mate, and you just look at him and feel so proud of how far he's come and you think, "I'm pretty sure he's alright now, but if he has a struggle, I'll be right beside him like before". That's what he needs now. A bit of faith, and a fair go from the public, who don't even know him. Let him get on with his life, just like any other person is entitled to. I hope he does come to the Tigers. I'd be rapt if he did.

Eddie's set for long haul

Dear Eddie, the first thing you should know about being the head of any organisation, whether it be collingwood fc or channel nine, is that it is YOUR responsibility to know what's going on within the business. You shamelessly blame others for both organisations' bad business decisions and pledge to fix up the mess with your expertise. These things should not of happened if you were any good at either job. Stop the blame game and do all of us a favour and resign!

Cousins faces nervous weekend

I was @ the Richmond session on Friday nite & it is quite obvious that Polak needs a lot of time. Although he appears "ok" it was very clear that he is struggling when it comes to his general balance which would make him a sitting duck on field. Until he can get through that (and whatever other issues he faces in his recovery) he should have every opportunity to recover at his own pace until he is ready... if he ever will be.

Scuttling the rumours

What is most frustrating is when stockbrokers manipulate prices by putting up multiple piddling small oders (5, 50 or so) on the exchange on both sides (buy and sell orders) in order to lock out the real traders. They can do this because they either don't incur bokerage on each transaction as a retail customer does or its much cheaper for them. Obviously there is no real intention to trade, just an agenda to manipuation prices at the expense of the retail traders.
